I get the frustration from @918AGG in his/her post up there. Was texting a friend at the game that I would just love to see some offensive sets for some easy, high percentage shots. We’re playing on the Stew Morrill court for goodness sake.
But right now, the easiest thing to clean up would just be free throws. The team is shooting a Chris Dudley-like 52% from the free throw line. 7-17 in game one and 12-19 in this game.

Yiiiiiiiiiiiikes.

Maybe if your team is 52% from FT, they shouldn’t be shooting 40 3’s per game.

Funny you should say Chris Dudley. Not sure how long you’ve been following the program, but his daughter actually played for us 4 or 5 years ago.

Good hell. We even had one possession where a super cold shooter hesitated, dribbled forward, then dribbled back and shot a 3 and missed it terribly.

Just ridiculous.

I honestly don’t understand Wes’s game plan. I’ll volunteer to coach this team if he doesn’t work out. I’ll teach you defensive fundamentals, and if you don’t learn them quickly, you’re done. Sadly, we seem to be about 6-7 players deep.

I’m really frustrated by what I just saw.

Somehow, this may actually be an improvement on Ard, but that bar is as low as hell.

Sure, but think you'd be able to do it for $300K per year?

Yeah, not a good showing. As stated, nothing seems to be going right. How long will he keep trying this? Are these the only ideas he has? You think the assistant coaches would be nudging him saying hey, we should try something different. We talk about halftime changes but it’s the same thing after halftime. I’m trying to keep the hype, but part of that is having a coach that can say this isn’t working we need to try something different.

He is a first time head coach. I am going to give him some time to figure things out.

I was pretty unimpressed with the staff he put together when the hires were made, and even more concerned now. When your associate head coach was an assistant at UMKC last year (who we beat) and had a coaching record at Weber State that would make even Kayla Ard blush before that, I can’t imagine there are many people in the room who can give actual guidance to the first time head coach. Which is what he needs.

I do feel the culture of the team is better and they definitely have some grit. but it’s certainly alarming that are struggling against bad teams.

Meanwhile in our conference, UNLV is on a roll, CSU just beat an elite 8 team from last season, Wyoming almost beat a sweet 16 team from last year….

Hopefully we’ve got a shot in the next two…especially the Bakersfield game.

On previous threads in prior years, people would complain about the results but end it with saying “but even if they were good I still wouldn’t be watching women’s basketball”. I guess I’m encouraged that at least you all are watching so there is actual constructive conversations about what’s happened the first two games.

it still feels like a long way to go but I do think the vibe and energy in the program just feels more positive. we’ll see what happens but I feel like there are positives despite these two early losses! it just may be a longer rebuild than some expected

Edited to add: just looked over the schedule again and I’m actually pleasantly surprised he didn’t schedule any non D1 teams. Realize that’s usually an easy win (except for that one game last year), but I think it shows a toughness and courage. like, let’s do this.

I was at the game and agree with most of the complaints. I think they would have won if they had quit pressing. The other team had to a ton of easy buckets and didn't create many turnovers.

My biggest complaint is that a certain player stopped even trying to pretend to play defense at the end of the game. Two or three times in a row she got screened at the top of the three point line and then just stood there and watched the rest of the play. Didn't fight over the screen or go with the roller or rotate to someone else just stopped in her tracks and didn't even pretend to try and play any D. She was scoring so she stayed in but seems like a terrible president for a new coach and a young team. Especially is your identity is supposed to be aggressive defense and max effort.

is this certain player a returning player (guessing? thinking I may know who)

Defense is a huge problem. Yes, it’s only been 2 games, but our defense is ranked 7th worst in the NCAA which is same as last year…and we haven’t played good teams. Bakersfield should be winnable, but let’s see if the pieces can come together enough in this one.

Circling back to this: free throws today were 17-21 for a very good 82%. Was the difference between a comfortable win and having to sweat out a small lead in the fourth, especially when Bakersfield got to within 8

Followed by the worse quarter of basketball imaginable. Scored 3 points. Down 30

Listen I somehow missed this game was happening and losing by 30 is always bad and yet, I expected it to be worse. There are positives to take away if you can say that in a 30 point loss…17 steals! And the 3pt shooting, while still probably too high in volume, wasn’t quite as bad percentage wise….

Also I think Omaha *might* be winnable. Not sure, I could be wrong. But if the remaining non con games it may be the most winnable

Free throw woes strike again. Not going to win many close games going 11-23 from the free throw line.
