USU WBB vs UMKC Tonight! Get to the Spectrum and Support the Ladies!

Post by Big Blue in a China Shop » November 4th, 2024, 9:09 am

If I wasn't 1,100 miles away I would try to make the game. I'm excited for this season, I think we'll see a lot of improvement from the last few seasons. Show up if you can, support the ladies! I'll be watching online.

And, I will always call them UMKC, I can't call them Kansas City, it sounds like we are playing a semi-pro exhibition game instead of a game against a university.

They are picked second to last in the summit league. We are up 3 late. We sure do play fast.

Gave up an easy layup with 20 seconds left. Didn't take a timeout with 3 timeouts left and traveled. This team looks bad against a very bad team but they play hard.

Woof. That was extremely disappointing. A loss to a team that is so bad that we beat them LAST YEAR.

Obviously this program is going to take some time to turn around so I’ll be patient, but I was not at all impressed with the game plan tonight. Especially down the stretch. That’s a really bad loss.

I think with men's bball we've been spoiled with this wild success despite losing coaches every year. In part, it's because of the portal scene in the major sports. I think women's basketball will need a couple of seasons yet to recruit, develop, and improve. This season is whatever, next season I'll expect improvement. By year 3-4 you can probably have a good idea of what this coaching staff can do.

That’s fair, it will definitely take time to be competing for conference titles. But in no world should we be losing at home to a team that finished 274 in NET and that we beat last year.

It’s not the end of the world and I’m obviously not giving up on this team or staff after one game. But it’s 100% realistic and fair to expect them to be instantly improved from the last few years, and game 1 sure didn’t look like it.

I will give them a bit, I hope it is like volleyball and as the season goes things start to click. By the time conference play comes around hopefully we have gelled more and the game plan becomes clearer.

Yikes. Hopefully learning moment for coaching staff. Not sure how I feel about offensive identity being chuck 40 threes a game and only defense plan is press all game.

Yeah, I have no idea how our recruiting is but in my opinion a
Mountain West team should never lose to a basement dwelling school from a small small conference

I think the game plan is pretty clear. Shoot 3s.

It’s going to be a very high variance play style.

I was hoping with hiring away an assistant from a big school they would be able to get more talented players

The MW is pretty bad in women’s basketball. But even still, you’re 100% correct. We’ve got a couple more cupcakes before the schedule picks up, got to win those.

I agree that I don't expect much this year. I will say that I enjoyed watching this game more than I enjoyed watching any game last year. We actually had an offense and the team played as a team, passed the ball. The defense was Swiss cheese.

I think this team improves as the season goes one.

That’s my biggest concern. Wes Brooks seems like a pretty likable coach who should be able to bring in talent, but I’m just not sure that’s a feasible strategy. I like taking a lot of 3’s and pressing in certain spots, but for that to be the entire identity of a team feels dangerous.

If you think that was bad, let me tell you about the time I subbed as coach for my cousins junior Jazz team. A kid ran onto the court with a juice box and tripped and spilled it leading to much slipping and falling in the purple mess. Once it dried it became a sticky and their shoes were getting stuck and coming off We lost 21-20 because one kid mistimed his buzzer beater.

Compared to the last couple of years? 100% more fun to watch this team. Are they perfect? No, but I can get behind this team and root for them more .

It's a nice change to see a team playing as quickly as this one does. If it works, I agree, it will be really fun. If not, it will just be fast-paced losing basketball, which sucks. I just want to see wins.

I think collectively as sports fans since COVID, and especially because of the quick turnaround success of the Football team in year 1 of Blake, we might be a little spoiled and amiss to think that a program that struggled as much as this Women's team the last couple years would immediately figure it out. I think the realistic expectation of a rebuild that takes a little time, might be a better mindset to have. This team has 7 Freshmen on it. It will take a minute to build chemistry with each other and the new coach.

Again, I agree with every bit of what you said. It will take a while to be a *good* team. But it’s not asking for much to think that with a new coach and new excitement and all of the decent players from last year’s team plus a bunch more that have been hyped up, that they should be able to beat a sub-250 NET team that last year’s sorry (I can't express myself without swearing) team beat on the road.

A true turnaround will take a little while. But this is Utah State. I will never accept that it’s okay for Utah State to lose to Summit League cellar dwellers.

That said, excited to get to the Spectrum tonight! Wasn’t able to make to the exhibition or first game, so excited to see how this team looks in person.

CSUN is an incredibly poor team (339 in NET) so I’m expecting a bit of a dominant win.

This is...hard to watch.

I like how intense Wes is on the sidelines and we've definitely had some moments in the first half, but this is just extremely poor basketball.

My hell. Wes, I’m here for you, but damn, please, please - let’s not intentionally lose every game this year.

I like threes, I like shooting a lot of them, but our team shouldn’t be a threes first team. Give Stubbs the green light on threes. Everyone else needs to earn it.

Not sure why Gracie Johnson hasn’t developed some sort of a hook shot. Work with her on that.

Longwood was really good. We should have her curl to the top of the key for a pass and then drive the ball to the bucket 5-10x per game.

Our press hardly qualifies as a defense. I like the idea of keeping Tarver and Stubbs (or their equivalent) up to press, but Stubbs has improbably bad defense, so maybe don’t sent her up to press when it’s the first step to a literal walk up, lay in for the other team.

Teach some damn fundamentals. Stay between your woman and the basket. Hands up, no walking on defense, keep an eye on the ball, don’t turn your back on the ball or your woman. I saw all of this perpetually, flagrantly violated tonight.

If you can’t give a crap about defense - or just aren’t good at it - you need to ride the pine. Yes, this means you, Stubbs.

We shouldn’t have a team mandate to shoot 40 threes if hardly a soul is capable of hitting one. Develop 5-10 set plays (see the Longwood example above), use them, let Stubbs take the ball by herself, and let this team cook.

Tarver and Stubbs is promising. Let’s actually create some plays for them to work together to find an open shot.

I’m officially very worried about Wes Brooks, although I know it’s extremely early. Wes, feel free to DM me, and I’ll send you 5 set-play ideas to hopefully get easier buckets.

I - honest to goodness - think that I could have coached this team to a win tonight. Fire away. I don’t care.

That was a brutal watch. I was really excited about the hire, and I've followed this team for far too long to give up after two games, but I saw very, very little to get excited about.

CSUN went 3-27 last year, and one of those wins was against us. That is a bad, bad, bad, BAD team we just lost to. And looked completely incompetent in doing so. It was painfully obvious through the entire game to me that we were the more talented side, but our gameplan (and I'm afraid it may be our identity) is just idiotic.

Shooting a gajillion 3's and pressing might work if you have extremely talented shooters and tall, fast defenders. Even then, I don't love it as a team's main strategy. We do not have those things, and I'm afraid Mountain West teams are going to absolutely steal our lunch money.

Warren Nolan has USU winning two games this season, this was one of the two. At this rate, I’m not sure we will a game this season.

I'm not sure I'd go quite that far, I really do think this team is more talented than last year's. And at least for now, playing with way more fire and care. But Brooks might need to start scheming for the team he has rather than the one he wants.

When people say they just “don’t like women’s basketball”, it’s because they’re envisioning that exact game.
