Molly Miller at Grand Canyon has done nothing but win. She’d be a great candidate.
I think there are 3-4 Big Sky head coaches that I’d consider.
Tricia Binfird from Montana State has had 17 straight winning seasons as head coach there. Former professional player. Maybe Sprinkle has some connections.
Loree Payne has done a good job of building a really bad NAU program into a conference contender in the Big Sky. She was successful at Puget Sound before that. She grew up in Montana and played at Washington so she has ties out West.
I think Joddie Gleason at EWU would also be a good candidate.
Montana’s Brian Holsinger wouldn’t be a bad get either.
JD Gustin from Utah Tech has done a respectable job and certainly knows Utah recruiting.
Nabbing a highly regarded assistant coach from Utah like Gavin Petersen, BYU like Lee Cummard or Morgan Bailey, could be options. I like getting someone with strong Utah recruiting ties.

Fwiw I've heard the same thing.lostaggiefan wrote: ↑March 12th, 2024, 3:08 pmI don't know what the administration is going to prioritize in a candidate (HC experience, P5 assistant, Utah ties, etc.) and thus, USU could end up switching gears from what I've heard and end up hiring someone mentioned above or someone similar. But judging from who I've heard to be some of the preliminary candidates and targets, I think people here are aiming a little low. Or at least, I think the department's casting their net a little higher in addition to some of these names from smaller schools.
People who are clamoring for high school coaches or fired men's assistants are aiming their sights way too low. Just because we made an underwhelming hire last time, doesn't mean she was the candidate with the best resume.

From the other thread:
I'd look at John Wardenberg, at BYU. He could be a stabilizing hire if he will take the job. Maybe for a few years until he retires and passes it off to someone else.
Good resume. Has coached Womens and Mens.
Plus he is a USU alum (Master's Degree)
https://byucougars.com/sports/womens-ba ... rdenburg-1
Under Wardenburg’s tutelage, the Southern Virginia Knights went from winning five games in the two seasons prior to his arrival to winning 27 games during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.
Assisted Coach Todd Simon in all aspects of transforming a program that had won 5 games in 2015-16 to winning their first Big Sky Championship in 2020-21.
In his first season as a college head coach, Wardenburg led the Indian Hills Warriors to a 29-5 record, and a trip to the national NJCAA quarterfinals (2014-15)
Coached Indian Hills Community College to the NJCAA National Championship (2014)
Led the BYU Hawaii Seasiders to the NCAA Division II title game (2011)
Helped the BYU Cougars to three straight Mountain West Conference titles (2007, 2008, 2009), 6 NCAA Tournament appearances and two trips to the National Invitational Tournament.
Coaching Experience:
Southern Virginia University, Associate Head Coach, 2021-23
Southern Utah University, Associate Head Coach, 2016-21
Westlake High School, Assistant Coach, 2015-16
Indian Hills Community College, Head Coach, 2014-15
Indian Hills Community College, Assistant Coach 2011-14
BYU, Assistant Coach, 2001-10
Pine View (Utah) High School, Head Coach, 1999-2001
Dixie State College, Director of Athletics, 1997-1999
Dixie State College, Assistant Coach, 1993-97
Payson (Utah) High School, Head Coach, 1988-93
Pleasant Grove (Utah) High School, Assistant Coach, 1986-88

Re: WBB Coaching Candidates
Anxiously awaiting news about the women’s hoops coach. There are several players that can be convinced to stay and give the new coach a chance. With the portal being open already, hope we get an announcement soon so the build can begin.
Re: WBB Coaching Candidates
I would look at Randy Rogers at the College of Southern Idaho. Just qualified for the 4th straight year to the NJCAA tournament. 500 plus wins. Aggie alum. Know how to recruit and coach. Rebuilds his roster every year with 5-7 freshman and still wins. I talked to him last year when he was down here in the valley recruiting and he said he would love to be the coach he is ready for a new challenge. Randy would stay here for several year. I think he would be here long term. He has been at CSI for 20+ years. Anyway that is my 2 cents. Go Aggies!!.

Agreed. Randy told me the same thing many years ago. He's a great coach, a great Aggie, and one who knows how to win.BigBlue97 wrote:I would look at Randy Rogers at the College of Southern Idaho. Probably best if the new coach overhauls the roster. It was a last place roster that got blown out all season.greggers1868 wrote: ↑March 19th, 2024, 3:35 pmAnxiously awaiting news about the women’s hoops coach. Re: WBB Coaching Candidates
Believe me, I’m well aware of the game results. I watched pretty much every one. But Stubbs is a great scorer. It’s amazing she averaged what she did when opposing defenses were laser focused on her almost exclusively. I also think Gracie Johnson has the potential to be a really good player if she puts on a little weight and the next coach doesn’t keep her hanging out outside the three point line offensively. . . . if she puts on a little weight . . .
Yeah, I'm not sure this is a phrase that should be said to any woman.

Re: WBB Coaching Candidates
Yeah as I’ve gotten in to women’s hoops I’ve sometimes struggled to articulate phrasing like this for a woman, when it wouldn’t be a big deal for a man. For instance, a couple years ago I was talking to my wife about a center/forward and called her a “big”, because of her position, which is normal in bball terms. But my wife gasped and said “You can’t call a woman a big!” So admittedly, I still have much to learn in the nuances of vocabulary between the mens and women’s games.

Re: WBB Coaching Candidates
Unfortunately I didn’t get there much in person myself this year; I streamed most of the games through the app. I live in salt lake, so I can’t make weeknight games, and every Saturday game started at 2 pm, which presents another problem when you have kids in activities on Saturdays. I really hope they can move those tip times back next seasonAggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑March 19th, 2024, 11:47 pmYou da man greggors. Thanks for supporting the women's team in person.
