That’s too bad. Big loss for the team. A little surprising considering she has so many USU ties.

Per Coach Rob, they did have 7 Seniors so they are going to bring in a bunch of people.greggers1868 wrote: ↑December 11th, 2023, 10:56 pmAre we expecting heavy turnover from the vb team this offseason?

Yeah the core is gone. Not sure if other underclassman lesving. As long as they keep coach Rob should be in good hands. Wonder if can bring some impact transfers to help with all the freshman signedsstrasser wrote: ↑December 12th, 2023, 6:16 amPer Coach Rob, they did have 7 Seniors so they are going to bring in a bunch of people.greggers1868 wrote: ↑December 11th, 2023, 10:56 pmAre we expecting heavy turnover from the vb team this offseason?

Once hiring season begins, don't be surprised when Coach Rob moves on as well. I think the dude has goals loftier than a Mountain West Conference regular season championship.greggers1868 wrote: ↑December 11th, 2023, 10:56 pmAre we expecting heavy turnover from the vb team this offseason?

Re: Volleyball - Leah Laboy
According to grandmother, Leah has played in a 5-1 offensive until she came to Utah State. Rob Nielson runs a 6-2 offensive system. A 5-1 system runs only one setter while a 6-2 system runs two setters with each setter playing half of each set. Maybe she wants to be the one main setter and be on the court all the time and have to share playing time with another setter as she has done at Utah State. She and Beatriz Rodrigues were great in tandem this year but the 5-1 system is more common.
I wish Leah well in her moving over to Oklahoma next year. Oklahoma wasn't real good this year and moving to the SEC next year could be a struggle.

Now Kambree Rodriguez has hit the portal. Wondering if the players know the writing is on the wall for coach Rob. This is a huge blow.

I’m not trying to start an argument, I’m genuinely asking why not? I’m not a volleyball expert but Kambree seemed pretty daggone good to me. And she was only a freshman so o my going to get better.aggieborn wrote: ↑December 22nd, 2023, 7:48 pmNot nearly as big a loss as it seems. Re: Volleyball - Leah Laboy
Yeah, not sure I agree with aggieborn on that one. It’s rare to find a freshman as good and as poised as Kambree, especially as a libero.greggers1868 wrote:I’m not trying to start an argument, I’m genuinely asking why not? No idea. She thinks that Utah State is beneath her daughter and the only reason she went there is because of Rob.AGGIEinIOWA wrote: ↑December 23rd, 2023, 7:23 amWill be interesting to see where she ends up. I’m not saying she’s not good, she’s very good. Team chemistry plays a pretty big role on winning though. Re: Volleyball - Leah Laboy
The NCAA allows only 12 scholarships for women's volleyball and a scholarship cannot be divided between two or more individuals. Utah State had 17 women on their volleyball roster so 5 of those women did not have an athletic scholarship. Maybe Kambree Rodriguez or for that matter, Leah Wilton-Laboy did not have a scholarship at USU and wanted or was offered a full ride scholarship somewhere. It is something to think about isn't it?

Re: Volleyball - Leah Laboy
I do not have any inside info there.
If people watched the team last year, they would have been able to see that they just didn't look like a cohesive group. They were talented as all get out, and that got them victories. But looked a bit like an old guard vs new guard from my seat.
To be clear - I do not know any members of the team last year and do not have secret or inside information. I do know people that are friends and heard plenty of 3rd hand accounts.

Re: Volleyball - Leah Laboy
Per the USU website, next year's team will be younger but taller. Rob is bringing in 8 freshmen with 4 of them being 6ft 2in tall. 3 of the women were 1st team all state in various classifications from the State of Utah. USU also signed Tierny Barlow from the University of Wyoming who is also 6ft 2in tall and was the Mountain West Freshman of the year in 2022. If everything comes together, we should be very good. It will be exciting to watch next years team.

I think we need another setter for next year. We had 3 on the team last year and lost 2 now.
I do not remember how many were in the class we just signed, but think we would want to carry 3.

I'll also say that while things can change, it certainly doesn't look like Rob is going anywhere. Just with the class he is signing, all the signees thanking Rob specifically, and Mrs. Neilson saying "welcome to the family!" on every new signee post. Granted this is college sports and things can change overnight, but outlook is certainly looking good for now.
Also agree with the above comments that chemistry seemed to be a big reason the team fell apart late. Body language was not good the last couple games.

As far as I know Rodriguez did not get picked up.
Anybody know what happens to Kaylie Ray? My daughter saw her from a distance today at the SLC Showdown, and she was in a leg brace and crutches.

Rodriguez was planning on a gap semester, maybe gap year the last I heard. Also, she may be staying in conference as of the last location I was hearing.

Interesting that this thread popped up this weekend again.
Did anyone listen to the UNEQUALED podcast interview with Coach Neilson from Mar 19? I did late last week
He mentioned bringing in a couple Croatian players
I'm excited for 2024 VB season. I wish they had anything close to the Midwest...
