2030 or 2034 Winter Olympics

Post by 3rdGenAggie » November 29th, 2023, 9:13 am

Looking pretty likely SLC is getting another olympics. The main question at this point is if it's 2030 or 2034. SLC wanted 2030, but with the 2028 games in LA, there is some concern about dipping back into the sponsor pool that quickly so I expect it'll be 2034.

The IOC met in Paris today to determine their "preferred" candidate. They won't pick an official location until just before the Paris Olympics this summer, but the preferred candidate will almost surely get the games. SLC is holding a press conference with a bunch of local leaders today at 10:30.

Good for those ******* at the University of Utah. They'll get a nice stadium update.

I don't care as long as opening ceremonies are in Logan for our new taxpayer funded stadium

I had the same thought. Haha. I'm definitely supportive of another Olympics, but that's the biggest negative I can see.

Nah, they will use the money to build a new Olympic Stadium out by the airport, which will then be used for the MLB team. They may also build a nice new Hockey arena for a new NHL team.

We should try to use the Olympics as a pathway to have a hockey stadium built on campus and get hockey to be a non-club sport and add women’s ice skating as the companion sport.

More likely, Ryan Smith is going to leverage a new arena at Point of the Mountain for the Jazz and a hockey team he wants to bring.

I hate the idea of moving the Jazz to Draper, but that's for another thread.

There it is.

French Alps for 2030, SLC for 2034 to "begin dialogue" and make an official announcement during Paris 2024. Something would have to really fall apart (like losing government support) for those to not end up being the final choices.

Also, Switzerland mentioned as most likely for 2038.

Get an arena built up in Logan for some of the hockey games that can also replace the Spectrum afterwards.

Provo got a new Ice Hocky arena out of the 2002 Olympic deal. Why not Logan in 2034?

I went to cross country skiing. I wouldn't recommend it at all. Just stand there and watch someone pass you every 10 minutes. If it's a good event then I'm sure it would be fun though. There is a reason tickets were only like $12.

Wasn't the Eccles Ice center in north logan built in 2002 as a training spot for some countries?
USU hockey fills that place up for their games so getting a newer arena closer to or on campus would be awesome.

Ogden got their ice arena for hosting curling. Logan did host some figure skating practices but not sure if that’s why we got it.

I saw on the Hockey teams Instagram that they’re hosting the western regionals. I think we need a bigger venue just for that.

I went to a hockey game. It was awesome. The tickets weren’t cheap but it was worth it. My family went to some curling and really enjoyed that. The atmosphere at the Olympic events is a lot of fun. Just walking around downtown SLC was a blast.

I went to the ski jumping portion of Nordic combined. It was definitely a bucket list event just for the simple fact that it was the Olympics, less so for the actual event.

It will do some good with our rapid growth to show that we are a bigger state than before while having the world with a strengthen positive view of Utah. By that point, we will have over 4 million folks in Utah while almost all of them from Utah County to Cache County which will be interesting.
