These things are awesome. I still have the one from the original Kickstarter and it just keeps on going.

I am glad to hear. We have had to replace the electronics for about 2 handfuls of people over the years, but still feel pretty good about our manufacturing skills considering we are amateurs doing this on nights and weekends at the kitchen table :) And, half of those "failed" electronics were software problems from earlier versions (pre version 1.4) where it got into a weird state where is had a corrupted config file and kept rebooting.

As a side note, we are redesigning the electronics base in conjunction with the WSU Kickstarter we are going to run once they approve our license (we have the institutional license done and are now waiting for product approval). As part of this, we are going to add some features:

1. A new/better processor that allow people to connect it to their WPA2 Enterprise access points. The are usually what you see on company or university networks (we assume you have check with your IT people and get the green light)
2. We will have the option of including audio playback (fight song, Go Aggies, etc)
3. We will have a accelerometer input where you can do some level of control just from tap interactions.

My brother and I talked about it and we are going to offer it to Aggie customers at-cost (plus shipping). It probably won't be available until closer to spring 2024, but I will hop back over here and make the offer once they are ready.

Sorry, one more comment. After over 4 years, we finally got a patent for internet-connected sports memorabilia. The cover page illustration is pretty sweet IMHO. :utah: :state:

We first submitted the provisional patent application in Mar 2019, the initial full patent filing in Mar 2020, and it was officially granted in Nov 2023. My brother has been through the process before with his day job quite a bit, so I am glad he knew what he was doing. As always, they came back and rejected about half the claims, but we still feel like we got a decent amount of what we were asking for in what we think is a new space of internet-connected sports memorabilia.

I apologize that I don't know what this is. Does this light turn blue automatically with an internet signal when USU wins? Or does the user have to toggle the light back and forth? Do you make these for other schools? Do you have to manually send the signal out upon an Aggie win?

Congrats on the patent

It's automatic. You connect it to your WiFi and there is a config screen where you can choose which sports to do it for. Once it's setup it will change blue within just a couple of minutes of a win. It's pretty fast. I know other schools have been attempted but not sure if they ever got off the ground.

In addition to the other explanations, it also has other modes. There is a holiday mode, where it flashes holiday-appropriate colors (and can still go to Aggie Blue when the team wins). One feature that was added ad the request of one of the Kickstarter backers was the ability to have it dim during sleep hours.

We are working on adding audio output and feedback from the user.

As long as the device is connected to your home internet, it checks our server periodically and then compares against the list of sports the user selected to determine if it should turn on.

We are working on WSU right now. If anyone here has a contact at the Sacramento Kings, we made a prototype for their new Light The Beam tradition, but haven't been able to get any traction from cold calling/emailing. After the WSU device, we plan on hitting one of the schools with the largest number of living alumni and that have big sports presence (Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Florida, etc).

I got mine in the Kickstarter, too. I love it. I would be very interested in an updated version that played music. My wife just hates that it gets very bright at midnight for one minute before going to the lower light setting I have it set at.

This was a bug that I thought I had fixed long, long ago. This is the first I am hearing that people are still seeing it. Have you ever updated the firmware on the device after the kickstarter? I think my latest version has that solved.

I have 1 light that is always purple/pink.
Do I need to buy a new one or is that something I can somehow reconfigure?

Mine is from the original Kickstarter. It still turns on at midnight but I might need to change a setting. Honestly this is the best sure thing I have! Will old ones get the update or am I going to buy a new one?

You can update to the version 1.10 of the software by following the instructions at https://sports-iot.com/index.php/support-and-faq/ (particular the The Easy Way section). I think the Kickstarter shipped with version 1.3 of the software.

For the music and tap to control, that probably won't be available for purchase for previous customers until about next spring.

Can you add in some old al Lewis calls where we can't understand anything? Or maybe some basketball traveling no calls?
