Jazz passed on Paul george
Partly due to the loss they had in Logan. Thank you stew. They took Gordon Hayward instead.

I sat/stood right behind the NBA scouts at this game and watched them take notes on PG on their blackberries. It was a consensus that he need to gtfo of Fresno ASAP or he'd lose his chance.

Re: Jazz passed on Paul george
Yeah definitely a big mistake and who knows how things would have changed with the franchise. By year 3 Paul George was going toe to toe with Lebron and the Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals. He was the second best player in that series behind Lebron, better than Wade.

After watching George I thought no way this guy makes it in the NBA. He looked lazy and disinterested. Just shows how important situation is.

I thought the same thing.
I thought the same thing about Andrew Bogut when his Utes got destroyed in Logan.
I wonder if George was deliberately sandbagging, knowing the Jazz were interested and not wanting any part of living in Utah?

That was the game that they didn't score for almost 10 minutes, and only made 4 field goals in the first half. The student section cheered them mockingly when they finally scored.

That season saw USU get wins over Paul George, jimmer freddette, and Damian Lillard.

I've heard of Paul George and Damian Lillard. Who is the other guy and why did you list him?

Some flash in the pan type player that was generating hype that would ultimately not develop into anything meaningful. It was just satisfying to beat him because I was at usu at the time.Coloraggie wrote: ↑November 14th, 2023, 12:42 pmI've heard of Paul George and Damian Lillard. So he intentionally sucked against USU thinking that would be the prime game the Jazz would watch so they wouldn't draft him even though he had no clue at the time where he would be drafted or what pick the Jazz would have? I guess anything is possible.

Yep. Breaking thirteen-year-old news.
Hayward was the ninth pick to the Jazz
George the tenth pick to the Pacers

That team could defend.
Pooh Williams was the best perimeter defender I've seen in Aggie blue.

Re: Jazz passed on Paul george
There were at minimum half a dozen NBA teams represented there - probably more like 10. This would be a dumb move.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑November 14th, 2023, 2:22 pmSo he intentionally sucked against USU thinking that would be the prime game the Jazz would watch so they wouldn't draft him even though he had no clue at the time where he would be drafted or what pick the Jazz would have? The impression I've always gotten with George is that he is as good as his effort shows. When he wants to really play, he is amazing, but doesn't always give that effort. This was a minimal effort game for sure.

Yep similar to the CP3/Dwill debate, it is one of those that has been discussed for over a decade now.brownjeans wrote: ↑November 14th, 2023, 9:55 pmYep. Breaking thirteen-year-old news.

Marcus Smart also would have been a better pick than Exum, but to be fair not a game changer.

Re: Jazz passed on Paul george
Another noteworthy thing, both Paul and Hayward left the team that drafted them. Only advantage to drafting Paul is that the Pacers got something for Paul.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑November 15th, 2023, 11:03 amYep similar to the CP3/Dwill debate, it is one of those that has been discussed for over a decade now.brownjeans wrote: ↑November 14th, 2023, 9:55 pmYep. Re: Jazz passed on Paul george
True they both played 7 years, but because the Pacers agreed to an extension and didn't just sign him as a restricted free agent they got Sabonis out of it in a trade which eventually led them to getting Halliburton.brownjeans wrote: ↑November 15th, 2023, 4:40 pmAnother noteworthy thing, both Paul and Hayward left the team that drafted them. Reality is the Jazz need to hit on two superstar caliber players at the same time, otherwise they'll never compete for a title again.

He did get it done in the 21 playoffs after Kawhi was out. Those games 5 and 6 steal haunt my dreams.

If by "getting it done" you mean beating the Jazz and losing in the next round and not doing anything in the playoffs since in spite of all the other superstars on his team. Yes thats correct.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑November 16th, 2023, 4:03 pmHe did get it done in the 21 playoffs after Kawhi was out. Those games 5 and 6 steal haunt my dreams.

Re: Jazz passed on Paul george
I still can't believe the pro career PG has had. Tai Wesley used to eat him for lunch down low and he was easily contained every time we ever matched up with him. This was not just some single poor game by George either, he was just not an elite player in college. He was never even voted to a first team All-Conference in the WAC, yet was somehow a lottery pick in the NBA??
He is the poster child for how the NBA looks for some magical combo of body type, measurables, and "potential" over actual college production. If he weren't pegged as an NBA-type player from his time in HS he would have never gotten the chance based on his college performance. He's also an example of someone who grew into and realized his potential which is probably on the less common side of things.

As a Jazz fan yes unfortunately he got it done against us thus why I said games 5 and 6 haunt my dreams since that was our best shot at a title in a long time.CaptainChaos wrote: ↑November 16th, 2023, 4:09 pmIf by "getting it done" you mean beating the Jazz and losing in the next round and not doing anything in the playoffs since in spite of all the other superstars on his team. And what superstars has he had on his team since? Kawhi was out against the Suns in 2021 and all of 22 and George was out last year(along with Kawhi after game 2). He wasn't "not getting it done with other superstars."

Re: Jazz passed on Paul george
just off the top of my head- John Wall, Russell Westbrick, Demarus Cousins, James Harden... They've had a number of pretty great role players on that team as well so acting like he doesn't have a supporting cast is incorrect.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑November 17th, 2023, 5:16 pmAs a Jazz fan yes unfortunately he got it done against us thus why I said games 5 and 6 haunt my dreams since that was our best shot at a title in a long time.CaptainChaos wrote: ↑November 16th, 2023, 4:09 pmIf by "getting it done" you mean beating the Jazz and losing in the next round and not doing anything in the playoffs since in spite of all the other superstars on his team. Re: Jazz passed on Paul george
John Wall is a superstar? What? The dude was washed with the Clippers and got hurt in January of last year, so never played with George in the playoffs anyway. Cousins? The dude was washed and barely played for the Clippers in the playoffs. Harden? We'll see, they've played about 6 games together so far.CaptainChaos wrote: ↑November 20th, 2023, 3:51 pmjust off the top of my head- John Wall, Russell Westbrick, Demarus Cousins, James Harden... Yoss I thought the same thing about Bogut. He got worked in Logan. There were a couple inside passes under the basket that I will remember forever. Just a fun low post combo to watch.
This post is likely straight up poor sarcasm and cannot be taken seriously.

Wall is as much of a superstar as George is. Maybe George was also washed before he got to the Clippers though. We'll see how the mess of egos do there this year if they all manage to not quit on each other.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑November 20th, 2023, 5:19 pmJohn Wall is a superstar? What? Re: Jazz passed on Paul george
He has been good when he has played, but he has been injured for a huge chunk of his time in LA and that sucks. There are star players I like and star players I hate, but I hate to see stars miss the playoffs with injuries. Hopefully the Clippers can be healthy this postseason.
It is like the Jordan Travis injury. I am not a Florida State fan at all, but just as a sports fan, it sucks to see teams not be at their best heading into the postseason unless they are playing USU
