Green Canyon High School Football Turnaround
As a fan and supporter of Green Canyon High School Football, it has been so much fun to see the turnaround they have experienced this year. They have gone from being a 1-9 team last year to 10-3 this year and will be playing in the 4A State Championship game (which will be a tall task against a very solid Crimson Cliffs team, but they have a shot as one of the last two teams standing).
Prior to this season, they had never beaten Sky View (0-7 after region play this year), had never been to the Semifinals of the state playoffs (they only had one total playoff win in 6 years prior to this year and have 3 this year), and had never won more than 8 games.
What was one of the primary causes of the turnaround? You have to give credit to the players and team for buying in and performing, but the main change was the head coach. What a difference a year has made. Go Wolves!

The former Head Coach there had underachieved with his teams for years.Bigd23 wrote: ↑November 12th, 2023, 12:13 amAs a fan and supporter of Green Canyon High School Football, it has been so much fun to see the turnaround they have experienced this year. Re: Green Canyon High School Football Turnaround
I will throw in a shout out to my Richfield Wildcats. They won just their second state title in school history yesterday and the first one since 1984. It was their first time playing in a championship game since 1988.
I watched the game yesterday on the KSL.com feed. What a great game. RHS trailed 14-7 going into the fourth quarter. They scored 3 touchdowns in the fourth, two within the final 3 minutes. The last one was a 72- yard pass and catch with under a minute to play.
The QB ended up with 404 yards passing on the day and the leading receiver (a junior) had 7 catches for 228 yards. Not too shabby. A very entertaining game. Congrats to the Richfield Wildcats. An undefeated 13-0 season.

Yes he had. Always felt the SV and GC programs were being surpressed and this year proved that was the case (him leaving SV was the best case for them and worst case for GC). Two Semifinals appearances in 17 years of coaching with no appearances in the Championship game. There were some very solid teams that should have been able to experience much more success than they did.aggies22 wrote:The former Head Coach there had underachieved with his teams for years.Bigd23 wrote: ↑November 12th, 2023, 12:13 amAs a fan and supporter of Green Canyon High School Football, it has been so much fun to see the turnaround they have experienced this year. How was the quality? Based on all of the complaints, I trust it was better than Kjzz?

Re: Green Canyon High School Football Turnaround
Curious, do HS FB players transfer to different schools in the Valley outside of their SD or boundaries? from worst to 1st is almost unheard of these days w/o some serious transferring.

It happens occasionally but not to the extent of the top salt lake and utah county high schools.

Years ago, Skyline High was the master at this. Was out DePaix?

Re: Green Canyon High School Football Turnaround
That was even happening when we lived in Park City. How the public schools get away with it here is by being an "open enrollment school" meaning they'll accept anyone who wants to transfer there.

Re: Green Canyon High School Football Turnaround
Skyline, then Bingham, and now Corner Canyon and Skyridge. They are basically all-star teams. I know Skyridge has 20 transfers and I'm pretty sure CC has more than that.
I'm sure its just a coincidence that CC and Skyridge are playing for the 6A state championship.
Re: Green Canyon High School Football Turnaround
Our previous head coach was bad enough that kids wouldn't come out and play. They'd join our marching band (which is awesome and a 7 straight year state champ) instead even if their parents bribed them to play football.
The culture and environment was full of excuses and finally got to a point where admin had to make a change and just changing the coach made the difference.
School choice was opened up several years ago in Utah but there are still supposed to be rules about transferring after establishing varsity status at a school. Don't know that the rules are strictly enforced, but our team wasn't built that way.

Re: Green Canyon High School Football Turnaround
It's been cyclical. Skyline, Brighton, Bingham, East, Orem, Corner Canyon, Skyridge. Any time you find a dynasty at the 5A or 6A level, they've hit the recruiting trail.

I do remember a big fit thrown over Mason finding to stay at Sky View instead of enrolling at Green Canyon where he belonged.Bigd23 wrote: ↑November 13th, 2023, 2:09 pmOur previous head coach was bad enough that kids wouldn't come out and play. Yes there was. He had to change his legal guardian to stay at SV from what I heard. That's where he wanted to be. I wasn't on board with him then but I am now that he is an Aggie.aggies22 wrote:I do remember a big fit thrown over Mason finding to stay at Sky View instead of enrolling at Green Canyon where he belonged.Bigd23 wrote: ↑November 13th, 2023, 2:09 pmOur previous head coach was bad enough that kids wouldn't come out and play. I find it troubling that people are putting so much emphasis on youth sports. We certainly have our priorities messed up right now.

You think the college FB TP is bad, I can tell you that the HS TP, although a bit more complicated, is far worse.

Just echoing the coaching props at Green Canyon. JT Tauiliili has done a tremendous job and the game plan they had in the playoff game against Sky View was fantastic.
The former guy, as also noted in this thread, was and is a bad seed. On and off the field. Not to go too far into details, but when he left Sky View, he did everything he could to poison the well for the best coach they could have possibly hired and the school ended up going with Danilo who ended up being there for a whole 15 minutes.

Re: Green Canyon High School Football Turnaround
Best thing to ever happen to SV football was the bad seed leaving to go to GC. Best thing to ever happen to GC football was the bad seed being asked to leave and JT coming in his place. There seems to be a common thread that continued on to Preston who apparently had a Freshman QB starting and had a rough season.rAggie wrote:Just echoing the coaching props at Green Canyon.
