Re: Volleyball Conference Play
Do they get an auto bid to the NCAA tournament? Or is that just for winning the conference tournament?

Watching the game tonight, and it really feels like we’ve outgrown Estes and need to move back to the Spectrum.

I hope our AD can find our coach some money. They probably can’t compete with P5 schools, but I would think they can get him a pretty significant raise.

Re: Volleyball Conference Play
Hate to see it happen, but it probably will. Which raises the question: What is is about Rob Neilson that has made him so successful at USU? If we're looking to hire a replacement if/when he takes a more lucrative offer, what are the qualities we'd be looking for in a new volleyball coach? How important that he has experience coaching both men and women? That he has national team experience? If we could hire one of his existing assistants, who would be the best candidate?
Nobody here knows anything.

I actually disagree, for a few reasons.OKAggie wrote: ↑November 10th, 2023, 3:27 pmHate to see it happen, but it probably will. 1. There is typically far less coaching turnover in sports like volleyball and soccer than we're used to in MBB and football. "Big" jobs open somewhat rarely, and it's not at all uncommon for a successful coach to stay at a mid-major for a long time and build a program.
2. I don't think Rob wants to leave Utah, and neither of the higher-paying jobs in Utah will be opening any time soon
3. I believe this administration will pony up and give him the money he needs
Of course, I could be entirely wrong. I just don't see the use in acting like he's already gone and talking about replacements at t his point.

If we do find ourselves in a place where we need to replace him, I would look at an assistant from Nebraska or Texas. If that’s something we could even afford.OKAggie wrote: ↑November 10th, 2023, 3:27 pmHate to see it happen, but it probably will. Re: Volleyball Conference Play
Rob is well respected. He is heavily involved in GMS+ that is used by coaches all over for training and improvements. I use GMS+ in the club I coach at and they have levels form beginners to collegiate. I wonder if he is a part owner in that.
The National team gives a lot of credibility, but the mens and womens games are so different. Similar to basketball, the men jump higher, hit harder, but the womens games is progressing that way.
I think Rob likes being in Utah. Pretty sure he has turned down other offers. Not sure how long we keep him, but he is special. He teaches the game, respects the players, and uses the mental game to heavily impact their performance.
I can ask a former player of his for a bit of a difference on his style vs back east. Might be a bit before I have that info.

I watched USU/Fresno last night, and I was impressed with the team. They went down in the first set, but rallied back and gave the Bulldogs a whoopin'.
Fresno has a new volleyball mat flooring system that looks super nice. Let's get one of those and get these games into the Spectrum where they belong.

So very impressed by them too. It’s crazy that they’re so far ahead of 2nd place in the league. Obviously, still have to win the tournament, but I’m not sure that even 2nd place CSU presents a big threat in the tourney. I hope I’m right.

Re: Volleyball Conference Play
At one of the summer road trip events they said that they'd be playing at least 1 game in the Spectrum this past year and I think they were hoping for it to be the BYU game. I don't think it ever happened though. Does anyone know why it didn't happen?

Re: Volleyball Conference Play
We're currently #16 in RPI (out of 344). We're probably in the NCAAT regardless of our MW Tourney results, but I think we want that trophy too.
I was talking to OKAggie last night about which sport USU actually has a chance to win a National Title in during my lifetime. I'm 39. We decided that Volleyball (or maybe XC) has the best chance. Hopefully we can keep Rob forever.

It did not happen because the upgraded replay equipment that has been installed in the Estes is not able to be moved easily into the spectrum for a match.ProvoAggie wrote:At one of the summer road trip events they said that they'd be playing at least 1 game in the Spectrum this past year and I think they were hoping for it to be the BYU game. Re: Volleyball Conference Play
I might be crazy, but I actually prefer playing in the Estes. We might be able to get a few hundred more people to a volleyball game in the spectrum, but the Estes is a pretty good size for the majority of the games. I think it gets pretty loud in there too. I do wonder if there is enough space to put a few rows of bleachers on the North side too.

I think most games should stay in the Estes (good size and atmosphere), but having one or two games a year in the Spectrum would be fun, market/promote the heck out the games, and make them big events, and then I think they would be successful and a super fun atmosphere/event.EngineeringAggie wrote: ↑November 17th, 2023, 11:07 amI might be crazy, but I actually prefer playing in the Estes. Re: Volleyball Conference Play
I'm 100% with you, I just wish our boneheaded former administrators hadn't decided to build a space with such limited functionality. Idiotic and completely shortsighted to not have it seat at least 2,000, and be able to accommodate women's basketball.EngineeringAggie wrote: ↑November 17th, 2023, 11:07 amI might be crazy, but I actually prefer playing in the Estes. Re: Volleyball Conference Play
I just watched Nebraska vs Michigan-
The huskergals are 26-0 (Conf 17-0) on the season, just clinched a share of the B1G title with 3 games to play.
They have only lost 14 sets all season.
The AggieGals were pretty competitive in their game against Nebraska -I said this that week, but multiple N-fans the next two days told us how good our team was - and we didn't have Tatum Stall that weekend.

Re: Volleyball Conference Play
I got to watch the third set of the match against Nevada - It was funny to listen to the guy calling the game and how excited he was that the Pack was "Only down 2!" when it was about 17-15. After it was over, and they showed the set scores, I realized that the first two must have been (I can't express myself without swearing) kickings -no wonder he was stoked that they were close and got to within 10 of a set-winning score!
Five games ahead of 2nd place, and a kickass 13match win streak after losing at AF in conf game 3.
The MW website shows 8 weeks of "Player of the Week Awards". They name 3 each week -Offense, Defense and Freshman of the week
USU had 10 named of those 24 - biggest winner was Kambree Rodriguez who was named Defense player 2 times and Freshman 4 times. Capllonch was named Defense twice and Stall and Mehmedovic each once for Offense player.
We should have conference awards - COY, Newcomer, possible Defense POY and at least 3 first team players
Can't wait to see what the Conf Tourney brings!
