The 2022 Boston Marathon is back.
Just six months after the 2021 Boston Marathon was held in the fall, the 26.2-mile race returns to Patriots' Day in April for the first time since 2019. (The 2020 race was canceled due to COVID-19 and last year's race was postponed to October 2021.)
Benson Kipruto and Diana Kipyokei, both of Kenya, were the men’s and women’s champions of the 2021 Boston Marathon. Kipruto will defend his title.
Monday's race also marks the 50th anniversary of the first official women’s field to run the Boston Marathon. Only eight women finished that race in 1972. This year, more than 12,000 women will compete in the fastest and most decorated women’s field, according to the Boston Athletic Association.
The runner you plan to cheer for on Monday has put in the work; now it’s your turn to make sure you’re keeping up to date on their progress through the race. The Boston Athletic Association’s racing app lets you do just that with live tracking, which is also available on the BAA website. All you need is their bib number or name.
Whether you plan to head to watch runners racing along the 26.2-mile course on Monday or cheer for the winners from the comfort of your couch, there are several options for watching — or listening to — the marathon.
Before you head down to race, be sure to check out the guidelines for what you can — and definitely should not bring — with you. Officials are also urging spectators and participants alike to practice personal responsibility by taking efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19, such as wearing a mask or to taking a test beforehand if you plan on being in a crowded indoor space or at a party.
The marathon begins with the men’s wheelchair race at 9:02 a.m., and if you’ve decided to watch from home, you can find live coverage in a number of places. Local coverage will be available on WBZ-TV, while live national coverage will air on USA Network. If you don’t have cable, switch on the radio for live coverage on WBZ NewsRadio 1030 or head to CBSBoston.com for a livestream.
The 2022 Boston Marathon will feature 30,000 runners, including participants from all 50 U.S. states and international competitors from 122 countries.
Tokyo Olympic gold and bronze medalists — champion Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya and third-place finisher Molly Seidel of the United States — headline the women's field. Des Linden, the 2018 Boston Marathon winner – the last American to win – will also compete.
Earlier this month, the Boston Athletic Association announced that Russian and Belarusian runners who currently reside in either country will not be allowed to compete in the 2022 Boston Marathon amidst the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russian and Belarusian citizens who are not residents in either country will be able to compete; however, they wont be able to run under the flags of their country.

9:37 a.m. ET - Professional Men’s Start, Official Starter: Amby Burfoot, 1968 Boston Marathon Champion who is also running this year.
9:45 a.m. ET - Professional Women’s Start, Official Starter: Val Rogosheske, one of the “Original Eight” finishers from the inaugural women’s division at Boston in 1972; running this year, 50 years after finishing 6th, with her two daughters.
9:50 a.m. ET - Para Athletics Division Start, Official Starter: Christina Whelton, member of Boston's renowned Brown family. It is customary for a member of the Brown family to start one of the races on Patriots' Day.
9:56 a.m. ET - National Anthem, Julia Minichiello of Canton, MA will perform the National Anthem. Julia won the Sing2Gether competition and is a UMass Amherst student.
9:58 a.m. ET - Flyover, Two C-130s out of the Bradley Air National Guard Base will fly over the course beginning with the Hopkinton start line at approximately 9:58 a.m. ET and finishing over the Boylston Street finish line at approximately 10:03 a.m. ET.
10:00 a.m. ET - Wave 1 Start, Official Starter: 2020 #BAAGivesBack contest winner from Texas, running his 10th consecutive Boston Marathon.
10:03 a.m. ET - Grand Marshals Arrival, Boston Pride captain Jillian Dempsey (Winthrop, MA) and Mary Parker (Milton, MA) will serve as Grand Marshals, arriving at the Boylston Street finish line in the 2022 Honda Passport 5-passenger SUV. Both will be greeted by fellow teammates at the finish line.

My niece ran that marathon last year. She did very well for a first- time participant with minimal training (6 months off an LDS mission).

We were in Boston when they ran the last one. Wife met a woman on our flight that ran and gave my wife her link to follow. It was kind of fun checking her results and barely even knew who she was. Runners were all over the town that evening and was fun to give them a thumbs up.
