Old sports photos

Post by usu99 » January 19th, 2022, 3:34 pm

Anyone know if there is a repository of old sports photos? Looking at the athletics site it goes back to maybe 2008 I'm trying to find 1995-1999 years.

For all of your IT needs send me a PM!!

Seems like this would be an easy thing to put online. I would love to have access to photos from the athletic events during my years at USU too (mostly 1990s as well).

Maybe the Statesman or Herald Journal have archives with photos. Probably not accessible online though.

I am sure they do.

Back in the 1990s, when I worked in the athletic department, the marketing and promotions staff worked out of "the dungeon" in the Spectrum. It was a windowless cave located in the bowls underneath the west stands, but above the locker rooms. In a back corner, along some weird corridor to nowhere, there was a treasure trove of old media guides and game programs from every sport going back at least 30 years (so back to the mid 1960s). If they still exist, it would be amazing to have someone digitize all of them and make them available for public consumption.

Cache Valley Daily (I think name is right) used to post great sports pictures. No longer around I assume.

Cache Valley Daily is the website arm of the Cache Valley Media Group.

They're still around, but they don't have much of an archive if you're looking for anything pre-2010.

I’d love to see more of this. I’m thinking back to the front page of the Statesman in 1994 after we destroyed BYU, that had a picture of Eric Franson(?) posterizing a BYU player. I may have some of the details wrong, but it was a cool photo!

Craig Hislop would be who I’d go to.

It's all still down there. I was sifting through it just last month.

Ah man, I'd love to have a chance to go through those again. Anyone have a spare key to the Spectrum?

A USU basketball history book really needs to be created.

If there is something specific you are looking for, you should contact Doug Hoffman. The sports information archives at USU are pretty incredible, I think that many would be blown away at how comprehensive they are. I could spend hours and hours just sifting through old photos and media guides that never see the light of day.

I agree that it would be great for it to all be digitized, but that is a huuuuuge job for an already understaffed department. But there's a good chance they have what you're looking for and can help you out.

To bad Ted Hansen just passed away. He could get you any photo you wanted!
