Just an off the wall take, I think Doncic is headed toward Larry Bird status .. or most common comparison.

Dude can totally ball.

Any team constructed the right way would maximize team passing screening, to get someone like that great shot selection and great team rebounding. Then a coach who can inject great team defensive x and o, and hustle.

The Jazz have great pieces with Gobert and Mitchell.

I made the assertion last season the liability on offense was Gobert. Kinda sad the Jazz can’t help Gobert develop better into a better clutch free throw shooter, and somehow get some post up moves close to the basket, maybe a hook shot or two. Maybe an up and under. Maybe an elbow 10-15 ft jumper. This is the dude’s 9th season with the Jazz, and he averages less than 8 shot attempts a game .. mostly put backs, ally-oops, and a screen and roll lay-up attempt. .. you cant tell me in 9 years he cant pick up some 5-10 foot back to the basket offense??!! WTH????

Sorry for the rant. I hope the Jazz can figure it out, a Max player at center should be better offensively than this, that’s all. His PER is 24.76 and that’s #6 in the league. Rudy should definitely finish his career with the Jazz, IMHO. Likely, he gets 2-3 more DPOY .. he’s worth keeping,

I dont think the GM has a good supporting cast outside of Mitchell and the 6th man Clarkson.

Likely they are stuck with Conley(past his prime)

And the rest need to be traded this off season.
This may sound silly, i think the Jazzs’ season ended when Ingles tore his ACL, there were numerous reports of his home events including the team, keeping the comradery, this is poorly evaluated when you have a bunch of talented guys.

A player who can inject championship experience on the floor, from the bench is missing, a la Robert Horry, ... a solid winner defensively and a clutch shooter in the last 5 mins of games in the playoffs.

Someone with rings, or a ring.

Someone who elevates the confidence and effort team wide. This ingredient is missing on the Jazz right now.

If the Jazz can pull it together, this might be the best year for them to win a championship - or at least make the Western Conference Finals (I think the Warriors will represent the West and will play the Celtics).
But I don't think the Jazz will make it past the Mavs.

Speaking of the Jazz - are they re- branding their color scheme again? Going to use that hip Body Glove yellow color that was so popular in the late 80s?

Ryan Smith has teased many different things. He has said "the Jazz have too many colors", he has teased black and white (painted the J-note outside the arena and the practice gyms in black and white), then teased gold (temporarily changed the J-note outside the arena gold and released gold playoffs logos on Jazz social media accounts), then just the other day said "purple is part of who we are".

TL;DR Ryan Smith has all but said the Jazz are rebranding, but it doesn't appear he's decided what that rebrand will be.

Put me in the camp of keeping Gobert and seeing what we can get for Mitchell. Don is going to leave anyways. If he is not scoring he really doesn’t do much else. Mitchell could be a good third option on a championship team, but will never “lead” a team very far. When he is not scoring he pouts, his effort declines, and unfortunately the team follows. Gobert is limited on offense but is the only player that defends and will go after rebounds. Wish Mitchell had the same attitude he had in his second year, he really could have been a great player.

Big fish in a small pond. He’ll go to a mega city and fade away, like Harden or Durant or etc

Also, looks like Utah is plying by the Utah State playbook with 13% 3PT for the game thus far and a whopping 35.6% FG overall

I’ve felt the same way about Mitchell. I don’t feel like his heart was in this series. Call me crazy but just get that vibe.

That was a lame move by Doncic, started that whole scuffle. He shouldn’t even be in at this point, just trying to showboat.

There really should be a mercy rule

I think you have to keep Gobert if you keep anyone. At least he plays hard and is the best in the world at what he does.

The Jazz, in general, and Mitchell, in particular should be applauded for quitting when their hearts aren't in it. They are looking out for their mental health under the pressure of having to perform. Simon Byles would be proud. I hope they are able to get right mentally, that is the most important thing.

I talked myself into watching some of the game. I tuned in at the beginning of the second half and lasted 10 minutes. Then it was back to baseball and cleaning the kitchen.

I noticed it on the schedule as I was flipping through channels. I saw about one minute of the fourth quarter. The current makeup of the Jazz will never be good enough to compete for a championship. For the fans, hopefully a couple of BYU nerds can get them going in the right direction.

Not sure if it was more embarrassing than blowing a 25 point lead in Game 5 against OKC in 2018, or a 25 point lead in Game 6 against LAC in Game 6 last year, or blowing a 3-1 lead to Denver, or you get the idea. Very embarrassing, sure, but there is a lot of competition for that title under Snyder.

He tries, and that's a big criticism of him. Hero ball. While that was an amazing shot and incredibly athletic, the smart play would've been to dish it to the wide open guy for a dunk. There was enough time to get it done. Had Ja missed that shot, he would've been excoriated, and rightfully so.

If the Jazz and Snyder party ways, I expect Smith will hire a female head coach.
I think Smith wants to be seen as a guy who shakes things up. Wants to be in the headlines. So it's only natural that he will try to do something unconventional with the next head coaching hire.

Becky Hammon has long been the name thrown around the NBA as the likely first female head coach. She just started this year as HC of the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA.

And that would be great, provided she's the best overall candidate.

Hava Nagila

I guess they play this traditional Jewish tune at the Vivint Arena when the Jazz win?

https://www.timesofisrael.com/why-do-th ... fter-wins/

I went to my first Jazz game in SLC in close to 20 years about 3 weeks ago and they blew a lead and lost that game, so i didn't hear the song. Now some Jewish people are crying cultural appropriation for using that song? You just can't win with some people.

That is an understatement. Half or more of the starters don't play like they want to win. There must be some locker room issues.

I was watching the last part and was thinking, just once let us be the team that wins one at the buzzer!!! then we get the shot and it's missed.

Assuming salaries could be worked out, who says no? RJ Barrett + 2 unprotected number 1 draft picks for Donovan? Also assuming RJ agrees to sign longer deal with Jazz.

The Jazz say no. What good are those two First Rounders if Donovan is on the Knicks to make them a playoff team. The Jazz can get more than that for Don.

Statistically, the Jazz would not have been a playoff team thus year without Gobert. His on/off court defensive metrics prove that without Gobert, the jazz typically had close to worst, I think 28th or so, defensive rating in the league.

Teams that have one of the worst defenses in the league rarely,if ever, make the playoffs.

This would make me argue that without a solid effort of other teammates, Donovan does not necessarily make a team a playoff team. I would need to look up Donovan on/off offensive numbers to see if his absence moves the needle as much as Gobert.

1. Hayward coming back to Utah would be truly hilarious. But those first rounds picks are kinda nice.. Considering that we are a franchise that HAS to build through the draft. Plus, is there a way that you could combine #13 and #15 in a package to sneak into the top 10 for a day one starter..? You have some flexibility to be creative.
2. I really like Collins. I also wonder if you could try and add Capela in the package since he is a discount version of Rudy. Udoka is awful.
3. Siakam vs Gobert is an interesting thought.
4. Could this be a checkmate move from the Jazz front office to prevent Donovan trying to force his way over there? LOL
5. Yeah, no thanks. A bunch of 'meh' role players and the picks suck compared to what these other offers are.

The trade I would be happy seeing:

I don't know what it would look like in the end, but the big pieces are:

NY Knicks get Donovan Mitchell
Utah Jazz get RJ Barrett

Not sure how you'd make salaries work...likely a third team would have to be involved. Donovan might waive his 15% trade kicker if NY is where he really wants to be.

Barrett is 6'6 and gives Utah a really good perimeter defender. He also scored 20 per game last year and is a decent enough shooter (34% from 3). Saves Utah money next year (he'll get a max after that) and is younger.

I actually think NY is probably the one who says no, although Donovan is heading into his prime so if they think they could sign another star or think he fits well enough with Randle they might go for it. Their defense would be appalling though.

Also, they might not want to with the hopes of keeping Barrett and signing Donovan as a free agent, but he couldn't do so for 3 more years and may be traded somewhere else where he's more likely to re-sign between then and now (like Miami). It'd be a big risk to just hope he signs as a FA.

Do you think there is any reasonable way Utah could get RJ Barrett from NY?
