Will USU play a full football and basketball schedule?
With the Covid variants gaining a foothold among the population and even the vaccinated are contracting and transmitting the disease, I was wondering what the chances are of USU (and the NCAA in general) playing a full schedule in the 2021-22 year? Football may be more likely than basketball. Will there be reduced crowd sizes? No fans? Forfeitures? I have seen other large group events (music festivals/concerts) that have been canceled already. I was wondering if college sports will join them?

sports will be played full schedule and full fans. none of the cancellations are being mandated, it is by choice so far. I don't see a mandate coming out from the powers that be but I can see an individual school backing out.

If safety was the top priority, the answer would be yes. None of the kids playing the sport will be in enough danger from COVID this season to cancel games.
From a liability and appearances standpoint, it remains to be seen. For many people in high-ranking positions, I think liability and appearances are a higher priority than playing all the games so I could see some getting cancelled.

Re: Will USU play a full football and basketball schedule?
That's true. Considering that, would say games will likely not be cancelled. If they are, I don't believe it will be truly for safety reasons despite the fact that that will always be the given reason.sam tingey wrote: ↑August 19th, 2021, 11:24 ammoney is the highest priority and most schools cannot afford to lose another season.3rdGenAggie wrote: ↑August 19th, 2021, 11:23 amIf safety was the top priority, the answer is yes. (Note to all: I'm not saying COVID poses no threat to anyone. I'm saying it poses very minimal threat to a bunch of extremely healthy 18-24 year olds, all or almost all of whom have been vaccinated.)

Re: Will USU play a full football and basketball schedule?
This may be naive of me, but I'm still hoping we see a collapse of the Delta surge just as sudden and sharp as the rise, as happened in the UK and other places. If transmission rates can fall back to what they were in June/early July, then I think we might be more or less in the clear. The likelihood of that happening can certainly be debated, and I'm sure many in the scientific community currently are debating that with better information and understanding than any of us. In the end, time will tell.
As far as what schools will actually do, I would be surprised if very many, if any, cancel all or part of a football or basketball season. Not unless we see another surge bigger than anything we've seen yet, with a lot more deaths than anything we've seen, too. If there ends up being some variant that comes out that is significantly more deadly to folks in the 18-45 year old range, then I would imagine that more people would finally take it seriously. Of course at that point, God help us all.
Anybody trying to predict the likelihood of such variants is just playing at being Nostradamus, though. I take the possibility seriously, but assume the likelihood is low.

We will all be wearing masks at the WSU game and their coach will comply with the king Enslee, whether by needle or religion.

Fingers X'd. Same for my sons FB team, we've already had two covid outbreaks and the kid is poised to have a great year, this would break his heart!

Washington State has already announced that vaccinated fans will not need to wear masks.

Are masks officially required at the WSU game? I am going but have not heard anything.
I think we will see full seasons. There are vaccines for those that want it. I think fans will be at all USU games. I am not concerned one bit attending sporting events indoors or outdoors.
I saw HAW announced no fans at their football games for 2 weeks.

Re: Will USU play a full football and basketball schedule?
Well Hawaii is relegated to playing in basically a high school stadium this year. So them not having fans isn't as impactful as in a normal season. Hopefully the state of Hawaii is in a good spot in 2022 with no restrictions when we go back over there. The two years I lived there were years USU didn't play there, so I need to get back over there to watch the Aggies.
As for this season, there might be some cancellations, but they are going to be fewer and far between. As a whole from what I have seen teams have been pretty good to be vaccinated and the news out of camps across the country are night and day compared to last Summer. Another thing is teams that are not able to go means that team will be punished this year as the MW commissioner states:
“Last year, there was not a vaccine; there was not a choice to be made. This year, there is,” Thompson said. “We are not going to mandate vaccination, but we will have consequences if you are not able to participate as a team.”
If a team cancels this year, you know it will be serious. On top of the serious situations that erupted last year that warranted games being cancelled it felt many teams treated the 2020 season as more of an exhibition year which I don't see as the case in 2021.

Speaking of fans in attendance, do you think any of the colleges or professional teams in Utah will have proof of vaccine requirements for fans? Like what we’re seeing with the recent announcements of Oregon and LSU?
**Not trying to send this to Sandbox. Just curious if anyone thinks we’re headed that direction locally.

At the risk of getting sandbox-y, don't put anything past Governor Inslee.sam tingey wrote: ↑August 19th, 2021, 11:16 amsports will be played full schedule and full fans. none of the cancellations are being mandated, it is by choice so far. Re: Will USU play a full football and basketball schedule?
You aren't going to see individual schools backing out at the beginning of the year when everyone has hope they will be successful, either just like to or in contrast to the prior season. When you get to the end of the year, schools with seasons that are lost causes are more likely to back out than ones with a championship to play for. It's not any coincidence that the FIRST team to want to cancel games in 2020 was a team that went 0-14 in their league and was scheduled to play road games against teams they had already lost to at home by 32 and 21.sam tingey wrote: ↑August 19th, 2021, 11:16 amsports will be played full schedule and full fans. none of the cancellations are being mandated, it is by choice so far.
