There really are a ton of great stories out of the olympics. I think my favorite so far is the Philippine weightlifter getting the country's first gold medal.

I like that japan is winning a lot of gold medals too. It is cool when the host country gets to celebrate victories. I really enjoyed the Australian swim coach celebrating Titmus' win in the women's 400 Free. I enjoyed watching the American Lee Kiefer win gold in the foil event in fencing. I liked it when Bermuda won a gold medal in Triathlon becoming the smallest nation by population to win a gold medal. I liked watching the guy from Ecuador win the road race in cycling.

Having spent a couple of years in Ecuador, I consider it my "other" home. I have been back there a couple of times and keep in contact with many Ecuadorians. This cyclist from Ecuador was very quick to point out that his achievement was his alone and he received no support or confidence from his home country. He said his victory and glory is his alone, and not that of Ecuador. Reading comments about his comment, it seems that lack of support from the home countries is common among South American athletes. Good for Carapaz for rising up against longshot odds to win a gold medal on his own.

That's an interesting comment about not getting any help from his country. Each of the best racers are racing over in europe and are on teams that support them. I don't think there is much support from the country when they do that, so i can understand his comment.

Even though the USA should win the gold medal in baseball every year, I'm very proud and happy for Japan for what they accomplished. That's probably one of the best stories of the Olympics.

How about tiny little Israel winning 4 medals, two of 'em gold? Good on those kids!

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Israel isn't that small. New Zealand has 20 medals with half the population. Hungary has 19 with the same pop. Cuba 14, Switzerland 13.

That said, they did over-perform as they were only projected to win two total.

USA women’s volleyball wins gold for the first time ever.

I know this is very un-PC of me, but I thought the mixed swimming relays were really stupid.
I also enjoyed the Men's 400m hurdles final. The Italian broke a world record that was 28 years old.

I liked the mixed relays and other mixed events like the triathlon mixed relay. I think it really shows a depth in the sport. Wasn't it a Norwegian dude in the hurdles or am I thinking a different event?

You are right, I misspoke about the hurdler. He was Norwegian.

I think my favorite American olympic medal is the woman's bronze in the marathon. It was her third EVER marathon and she got bronze. My favorite American gold medal has to be the Wrestler Gable getting the two points to win as the time expired.
