Stephen A Smith
I was just curious what peoples thought or opinions are on Stephen A Smith. Me personally i have a very hard time listening to him, or even trying to follow him. I ask cause when he says something controversial it goes viral. He has a lot of influence, or at least it appears that way, but i really have a hard time with him.

I can't take him seriously. He's more an actor playing a character than he is an analyst.

I don't really follow much of what he or anyone in that realm does. I think there are annoying parts of his schtick. I also think there are times that he does a good job of sharing a hard opinion. I understand why he does what he does so it doesn't really bother me much.

Re: Stephen A Smith
Obviously an entertainer who wants to be seen as the show more than just analyzing the show. He is more sincere in his opinions than someone who is just a mindless troll only out for clicks like Skip Bayless. Sometimes those opinions are stupid and not well thought out, but other times he is spot on.
I also would defend him in the recent "controversy" with him and Kwame Brown. I get being an athlete in the public eye it would suck to have media figures go after you and scream to the world you are terrible at your job. That would weigh on anyone mentally to have national television and radio programs bashing you.
With that said, it would be pretty boring if analysists had to pretend players like Kwame Brown weren't busts and couldn't be honest about their impact. There is a clip that has gone around after the Lakers traded Kwame Brown to the Grizzlies back in 2008 for Pau Gasol of Stephen A just going ballistic on how bad Kwame was and how good of a trade it was for the Lakers. Well, he was right. The Lakers went from a mediocre team that couldn't get out of the first round to a team that made 3 straight finals and won 2 championships.
I get where Kwame is coming from in his recent criticism of Stephen A, but at the same time analysists have to do their job too.

Re: Stephen A Smith
I used to hate him and found him to be annoying but there have been times over the past couple of years that he has let everyone know it's just a gimmick. He's essentially playing a character in front of the camera. Seeing him sort of smirk after a ridiculous comment or laugh at himself sometimes has made him a little more bearable for me. I don't agree with the majority of what he says but I'm not sure he really believes it either.
Now Skip Bayless or Shannon Sharpe....that's a whole other level of disdain

Yeah there is nobody I have less respect for in sports media than Skip Bayless. Just a pure troll who says outlandish things purely to be talked about and get ratings. He is the one show I refuse to watch even if it is just on at the gym or I am randomly somewhere where it is on.Aglicious wrote: ↑June 3rd, 2021, 12:08 pmI used to hate him and found him to be annoying but there have been times over the past couple of years that he has let everyone know it's just a gimmick. He is a loud mouth, but is obviously playing a character. The more outlandish the opinion the better. He has become almost a caricature of himself. He can be annoying for sure, but is entertaining in small doses.

Stephen A Smith is the national version of PK from 1280. He plays a character that I find annoying, but some people must enjoy.

I love Stephen A Smith. His rants are well thought out and interesting. I like how he doesn’t let the Shaquille O’Neal s of the world step on him. There are things I disagree with him, but I still enjoy some of his points. I didn’t care for him at first.... but he kinda grew on me .

Re: Stephen A Smith
And his NBA takes are much better than Barkley's or Shaq's on tnt. Both of them are basically trolls who are allowed to be trolls because they are legends of the game. Barkley's predictions are usually laughably and predictably horrible. He picked the 8 seed Blazers to make the finals last year for example.mcaggie1 wrote: ↑June 5th, 2021, 6:17 pmI love Stephen A Smith. His rants are well thought out and interesting. Re: Stephen A Smith
Love the love SAS is giving Donovan, but saying he is the best Jazz player already is a bit much at this stage. Definitely the best since Stockton and Malone and he has a great shot to end up as the best, but a little early to say it now.

I won't comment on the Stockton and Malone part, but he is spot on for the rest of it. Smith says that Mitchell is the best player in the playoffs right now. I am not sure I can disagree with that statement.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑June 11th, 2021, 9:34 am

Re: Stephen A Smith
You could make an argument that he is better than both in terms of scoring. He's a better rebounder than Stockton, and a better passer than Malone. He's more explosive than either. Not as good defensively (harder to compare due to rule changes). The really tough thing to do, though, is to keep it up for the next decade and a half.
Edit: explosive, not exclusive

Re: Stephen A Smith
Agreed on pretty much all points. A huge part of what made Stockton and Malone so great was the longevity.dirtnsnow wrote: ↑June 11th, 2021, 11:19 amYou could make an argument that he is better than both in terms of scoring. Re: Stephen A Smith
Smith seems to be master of hyperbole and quite sure of himself.
2017 NBA Draft
1 - Markelle Fultz (76ers)
2 - Lonzo Ball (Lakers)
3 - Jayson Tatum (Celtics)
4 - Josh Jackson (Suns)
5 - De'Aron Fox (Kings)
6 - Jonathon Isaac (Magic)
7 - Lauri Markkanen (Timberwolves)
8 - Frank Ntilikina (Knicks)
9 - Dennis Smith, Jr. (Mavericks)
10 - Zach Collins (Kings)
11 - Malik Monk (Hornets)
12 - Luke Kennard (Pistons)
13 - Donovan Mitchell (Jazz)
Do you think any of these teams want a "do-over" in this draft?

Re: Stephen A Smith
Check out 2013. It was a terrible draft, but had 2 bonafide stars. They were taken at 15 (Giannis) and 27 (Gobert). They would go 1 and 2 with a redraft.Yossarian wrote: ↑June 11th, 2021, 2:13 pmSmith seems to be master of hyperbole and quite sure of himself.

Re: Stephen A Smith
I doubt that. I could see someone in management leaking that, but that seems more like scapegoating. In the Summer of 2013 the Jazz were planning to tank the next season as they started a rebuild. Corbin was a lameduck coach that 100% wasn't going to be retained after the 2013-2014 season. They wouldn't have listened to a lameduck coach if they were set on another player and if they did, that is on them too.3rdGenAggie wrote: ↑June 11th, 2021, 2:29 pmCheck out 2013. For all the great things Jazz management has done to get to the current moment of having the best team in the league, they made some really bad draft decisions in the mid 10's. You bring up 2013, but 2014, it was a horrible decision to go with Exum over Smart and Randle, and 2015 it was pretty bad to pick Lyles over Booker.

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure I believe it, but it has been said by people generally in the know. Giannis and Rudy were both huge risks at the time, only picked for their potential.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑June 11th, 2021, 5:21 pmI doubt that. Funny how the safe pick (NCAA POY Burke) flopped and the risky pick (Rudy) was a huge success.

Re: Stephen A Smith
Should also be considered that without Lyles and Exum, the trades don’t happen for Mitchell and Clarkson. They’ve recovered pretty well even with bad draft decisions.Mr. Sneelock wrote: ↑June 11th, 2021, 5:27 pmTrue, but every team has those draft misses. The draft is a huge crapshoot.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑June 11th, 2021, 5:21 pmI doubt that.
2017 NBA Draft
1 - Markelle Fultz (76ers)
2 - Lonzo Ball (Lakers)
3 - Jayson Tatum (Celtics)
4 - Josh Jackson (Suns)
5 - De'Aron Fox (Kings)
6 - Jonathon Isaac (Magic)
7 - Lauri Markkanen (Timberwolves)
8 - Frank Ntilikina (Knicks)
9 - Dennis Smith, Jr. (Mavericks)
10 - Zach Collins (Kings)
11 - Malik Monk (Hornets)
12 - Luke Kennard (Pistons)
13 - Donovan Mitchell (Jazz)
Do you think any of these teams want a "do-over" in this draft?
(As an aside, the Jazz entered that draft with 13 and 21. They packaged them to move up and get Trey Burke then got back in to take Rudy. Andy Larsen of the Trib has said he heard the plan was to go Giannis at 13 and Rudy at 21, but Ty Corbin really pushed for Burke. Can you imagine....)
