Re: Rudy Gobert - New Contract
I say right amount just because they got him re-signed. Obviously I wish they could have signed him for half that and had money to chase a 3rd star, but they've built their entire team and strategy around his unique skills. Re-signing him was critical.
They ended up giving him 5% over the max and 10% under the super max. Someone else definitely would have given him the max next summer, so at worst it's a 5% overpay.

Re: Rudy Gobert - New Contract
I was once opposed to signing Gobert for that much. Then I thought: what else could we do with the money? Who could the Jazz realistically sign in free agency? Once you think through it, the Gobert extension is a good thing.

Re: Rudy Gobert - New Contract
Especially since he stated he didn't push for the supermax to allow for the team to spend it on others. Good move there, even if it was just a 10% difference.

Re: Rudy Gobert - New Contract
Super max would have been around 5 years $225 million.
Gobert's contract is RICH. I hope that Qualtrics money keeps flowing.

They did what they had to do. I don't like paying a nonscorer that much, but keeping him in a Jazz uniform was absolutely necessary, so it is what it is.

Re: Rudy Gobert - New Contract
I just don't see how these max quantities end up being viable for small market teams a few years from now. Max salary has basically doubled in the last 10 years (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highest-p ... _by_season), when it had only been a 35% increase in the decade before that.
I think the NBA will reach a point where max contracts are so big that a small market team can't even think about offering that much.

Re: Rudy Gobert - New Contract
The players and owners split basketball-related revenue approximately 50/50. The salary cap is set based on that number. The max and supermax contracts are based on a percentage of the salary cap and how many years the player has in the league. So the more money the league makes the bigger the max contracts are. So small market teams can afford them the same as anyone else. In fact, the supermax is designed to help small market teams keep their players.
Trust me, the owners aren't hurting. The NBA basically prints money.

If you don't like the amounts of money the NBA is throwing out then don't watch. Don't buy their gear either. That is the only way to voice your opinion.

I imagine the people who don't like the NBA don't watch the NBA. I support free enterprise and players making the money they deserve as do most people.

Gobert 20/17 on 8-10 last night in a blowout win. Definitely a good start to living up to his contract.

People who don't at close attention don't see how Rudy affects the game. He has an enormous impact on the Jazz, and they are demonstrably better when he is on the floor.

Re: Rudy Gobert - New Contract
His role in the 2017-2018 season is underappreciated and should forever have proved his value to jazz fans. The Jazz were pretty bad and not close to the playoffs without him. He got hurt for a chunk of that season and they were way out of the race. He comes back and they finish 30-8, make the playoffs and beat the Thunder in the first round. He wins defensive player of the year and he had a strong case for winning mvp.Mr. Sneelock wrote: ↑December 24th, 2020, 9:39 pmPeople who don't at close attention don't see how Rudy affects the game. Gobert 29 points and 20 rebounds in a double digit win over the Mavs with Donovan Mitchell not playing. Jazz currently have the best record in the NBA.

Re: Rudy Gobert - New Contract
Yep. Next two games will be tough. Got to beat the Mavs again on Friday and then play in Denver on Sunday. I really hope by the playoffs more fans can be in the arena. I still think the Jazz are a year or two away from winning it all, but would love to see them with a real home court advantage throughout the playoffs.slcagg wrote: ↑January 27th, 2021, 11:11 pmOn a b2b right? Denver has been a disappointment thus far this season.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑January 27th, 2021, 11:18 pmYep. Next two games will be tough. I think Dallas has had injuries?

Re: Rudy Gobert - New Contract
Denver struggled to open the season, but have now won 5 in a row. Dallas has had their share of injuries, but had a full team tonight for the first time in a while. It will be tougher to beat them Friday with them more gelled and a couple days of acclimation in SLC with time to scout their errors. I hope I'm wrong, but I think the winning streak ends either Friday or Sunday. If the Jazz win both of those, look out!slcagg wrote: ↑January 27th, 2021, 11:20 pmDenver has been a disappointment thus far this season.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑January 27th, 2021, 11:18 pmYep. Re: Rudy Gobert - New Contract
I know I have bias as a life-long Jazz fan. But when I'm talking basketball with someone, I measure how much I trust their basketball knowledge/opinions based on what they think of Rudy Gobert. They don't have to think he's on the same level that I do, but if they go to the "he only averages 12 points per game, he's an offensive liability" thing, I know it's time to back out of the conversation. Basic stats are so disingenuous to the impact Rudy has on games.Mr. Sneelock wrote: ↑December 24th, 2020, 9:39 pmPeople who don't at close attention don't see how Rudy affects the game. Re: Rudy Gobert - New Contract
This Jazz team is really, really good. I think they may well end up being the best Jazz team since the Stockton and Malone days. They've finally fully leaned into the analytics, and they're perfectly built to play analytical basketball.

Re: Rudy Gobert - New Contract
In 2017-2018 the Jazz were 37-18 with him, 11-16 without him. That tells you all you need to know about his value.stang wrote: ↑January 28th, 2021, 12:32 amI know I have bias as a life-long Jazz fan. Although to be fair, the current Jazz team is good enough to weather the storm of a Rudy injury better than that team did.
