QB Draft Question

Post by Yossarian » December 29th, 2020, 3:36 pm

I see BYU's Zach Wilson rated very high on a lot of NFL mock drafts and he is getting a lot of attention. How would you rate him against San Jose State's Nick Starkel or Nevada's Carson Strong. I'm not so sure I wouldn't take Starkel or Strong over Wilson.

QB Draft Question

Post by QuackAttackAggie » December 30th, 2020, 8:32 am

Wilson has 36 touchdowns and no interceptions in the red zone since 2019 and has made some really impressive throws. There's a reason why he's a top ten pick and Starkel isn't even in the draft.

Wilson is the real deal. It pains me to admit it but I think he’ll be a better NFL qb than Love. I also think BYU-Provo will come back down to earth and be average again once he’s gone.

I don't think Wilson is better than Love. But he seems pretty equal to Love. Wilson was behind a good O line this year. When his protection breaks down, he looks quite average.

And the defenses he played against were average, at best.

Team (W-L)/passing def. ypg/Wilson passing yards

Navy (3-4)/180/232
Troy (5-6)/238/392
La Tech (5-5)/240/325
UTSA (7-5)/228/292
Houston (3-5)/245/400
Texas State (5-2)/270/287
Western Kentucky (5-7)/170/224
Boise State (5-2)/210/360
North Alabama (0-4)/155/212
Coastal Carolina (11-1)/203/240
San Diego State (4-4)/185/303
Central Florida (6-4)/283/425

To his credit, Wilson did pass for more yards than the average allowed by each team he faced.

Was he going behind a good offensive line, or an average offensive line who are going against mostly really bad defenses ? They played a few decent teams, but even Boazy was down this year. They did play the weakest schedule they have played in years.

Wilson was very impressive in the games I watched, but byu's schedule was so bad, it is hard to fairly judge for the next level. He is smart to leave after this year. byu plays 8 P5 teams next year. He'll never look as good a he does right now.

Wilson is an NFL QB- but he isn't nearly as good as people think....

Dax Milne has that Austin Collie/Steve Smith thing where he ends up wide open seemingly out of nowhere. Good game planning, scouting, route running, etc...and it's very good that Wilson was able to take advantage of it (not every college QB could)

But Love making throws like his TD to Repp- or the TD passes to Jordan Nathan and Mariner against Wake. Very tight windows- I don't see that as much in Wislon.

Wilson will easily go 1st round, but I think this draft is going to wind up shallow on QBs after Trevor Lawrence. I dont believe in Fields, Wilson, Jones or Trask as first rounders. There are a lot of teams that need QBs- and most of those teams are pretty awful at picking them. So many people were high on Dwayne Haskins too- and as a former football team fan- everyone thought I was crazy.

I could be wrong and maybe Wilson will make the Jets into the new dynasty. I haven't watched much outside of USU and I dont get paid to do anything related to football let alone scout- so wtf do I know. I just dont think Wilson is going to live up to the hype when he is no longer playing CUSA teams.

Wilson will get drafted but I don’t think he lasts 3 seasons.

Love was lucky enough to go to a good team in the first round. Wilson is really good, but very well may go high enough to go to a bad team. For a QB in the NFL, talent is the most important thing, but situation is easily second and it makes a huge difference on a players career trajectory.

After the two semi final games I would imagine fields and Jones move up on most boards

The most successful quarterback in this 2021 draft is probably the one picked by the Jets. The Jets GM believes in building the o-line to be successful, so he got within a year of being GM former Broncos starting center McGovern, former starting Panthers offensive guard Van Roten, former starting Ravens offensive guard Lewis, former starting Seahawks offensive tackle Fant, 2020 1st round pick Becton, and 2020 4th round pick Clark. The Jets have 9 draft picks and in reality probably the most cap space. I would expect that high level of aggressive moves to beef up the Jets o-line.

I saw his name for the first time today in the paper. The article mentioned him in the same sentence as Steve Young. They think he could go in the top 5.

He probably was a better college QB than Love. But, Love has a higher ceiling, (and a lower basement).

If they think Wilson's pro ready next season he's valuable because a team can build a winner by getting him on a rookie contract and spending money on other positions.

I realize that everyone exaggerates physical measurement, but he would be lucky to measure 6’3” in long cleats on cement with his helmet on.

There have been successful NFL QBs lately that are shorter (Brees and Wilson), but I think he is almost on the left tail of the current distribution

If he's 6'3" then I'd like to borrow that measuring tape to take down an "official" length to make me feel better about myself.

Official Loveline measurement is from the center of the anus, wrap it twice around the balls, to just past the tip.

Honestly, this is a really bad take. Sort of like when Ute fans claimed Huntley > Love in the NFL draft.

Wilson is heads & shoulders above and is a guaranteed top 5 pick.
