What an ending to Game 4

Post by Yossarian » October 24th, 2020, 10:43 pm

That was a fun game. I could not believe that ending. What a meltdown by the Dodger defense. Janzen doesn't back up the catcher, centerfielder muffs a ball, bad relay by Muncy, missed catch by Smith, Arozarena falls down. How many lead changes? Wow.

I didn't watch, but caught the video after my siblings text chat blew up about it.
Looking at the box score -
8 half-innings in a row with a score (bottom 4 to top 8)
3 lead changes
6 HR's
15 left on base
Pinch Runner from the 6th inning get first at bat in 9th and wins it on a line drive which starts a defensive circus

and the best part
Dodgers lose!
not only that, they lose after putting up 4 runs in first 6 innings and 2 more in the 7th and another in the 8th.

Game 6 - why pull Snell in the fifth? He was cruising and in a zone. Managers over think sometimes. When a guy is in a groove, sometimes you just have to let him ride, regardless of what these data says.

Yep. I don't even know baseball and I wouldn't have pulled Snell yet. Over-managed and it might cost them the game.

How can those last two Rays batters not be thinking fastball with two strikes in the ninth? You have to know a fastball is coming.

I don't know how much I agree with taking out Snell. He was pitching great! In a regular season game... he stays in, but the playoffs are so different. You're always playing to averages and you don't want to get guys used to the pitcher. It's always scary giving someone a third try at your pitcher.. especially the Dodgers

It was a tough call for a manager, I'm sure. They said Snell hadn't pitched through 6 innings in a start since July of 2019. He has had some injury issues and hasn't been able (or they haven't asked him ) to go deep into games for over a year. He would have been facing the top of the order in the third time through the batting order. He had also faced the top three in the order 6 times in the game to that point and had struck them out 6 times. Betts had an abysmal batting average against left-handed pitchers in the series, as well. To me it looking like Snell was rolling and they should have kept him in. He was not happy to be pulled.
