relevant today because, well, you know:

I was out of town and missed this when it happened:
When I first saw this wonderful part of our country, I was about your age. Whenever I return -- as often as I can -- I am reminded that it was a birthright member of the Eastern Establishment, Horace Greeley, who popularized the phrase, "Go West, Young Man," but it was Brigham Young who knew where to stop.
-- President Gerald Ford

Happy Pioneer Day!

And GoAgs!

I can personally confirm that it was Brigham Young and not Horace Greeley who knew where to stop. The town that Greeley helped create in Northern Colorado is kind of a dump

Horace Greeley never stepped foot in Colorado. The city is name after him because he was anti-slavery and that is what they wanted. Greeley is a farm town, much like Logan. I would rather live in Colorado than Utah. That is just me.

I’m the exact opposite, but maybe that’s because I moved from Logan to Greeley and my view is a bit skewed because of that. Greeley is more of an oil town than a farm town, and the farm smells on the west side of Logan are much more pleasant than the smells from the meat packing plant in Greeley.

I’d happily live anywhere else on the front range except Boulder, and I’d also probably like Colorado Springs as well.

Bridger told Brigham Young not to stop here. He said he would give money if the Saints could grow one ear of corn. The one who's idea it was to come here was Joseph Smith who saw the Salt Lake Valley in a revelation.

By the way. That was the year I graduated. I was there for Ford's commencement speech. Couldn't tell you a word of what he said.
