It’s the little things

Post by Garylynnaggie » January 16th, 2025, 1:41 pm

A number of years ago my son was playing high school basketball. They were a pretty good team but late in the year they started missing a lot of free throws. I only called the coach one time in his three year prof playing basketball but I decided to give him a call about the free throws. I ask him what he thought the missed free throw indicated. He said it suggests that they are tired and I think he was right. Free throws are about repetitive consistency and confidence. Being tired can interfer with those mechanics.
In addition turnovers and rebounds are also about tiredness among other things. Yes there were a lot of long rebounds off missed threes. I seriously doubt that the team didn’t recognize this situation but for whatever reason didn’t respond. Turnovers can also be because the team was tired. We failed to create the number of take always that we typically make and we gave up more than we should have.
A couple of weeks ago the coach in a post game interview mentioned that he thought the team was tired and was looking forward to the week long break.. I think he was right and expect to return to the aggressive USU energy level that we love and appreciate. The little things do matter. Go aggies

On the season we have averaged about 10 steals per game. Last night we had 1. The Aggies are best when they are pushing the tempo off of missed shots, steals etc. When the Aggies play half court offense they are not as effective. UNLV was also putting a lot of ball pressure on the guards way out past the 3 point line so it was difficult to get into the offense early. A week off should help with the energy lack that we saw last night. UNLV was also the way more desperate team having lost 2 in a row and playing at home.
