We said that same thing last game…
About time that turnovers, FTs, and a lack of rebounding killed us.

Re: Rebounds and Free Throws
UNLV got a lot of offensive rebounds because they were missing 3's so badly. We had guys crashing the boards and then the rebound would come out by the free throw line or just get tipped out by UNLV. I think on every 3-pt shot we needed to have our PG run to the FT line to gather the long misses or tip-outs. Probably could have cut UNLV's offensive rebounds in half and had a chance to run out on fast break.

Honestly, a good idea.Coloraggie wrote: ↑January 16th, 2025, 12:54 pmUNLV got a lot of offensive rebounds because they were missing 3's so badly. Re: Rebounds and Free Throws
We're always going to be down a few rebounds playing a zone defense. With a man defense, your guy is right there to block out, but with a zone, it starts to look like a zone-blocking scheme in football. Find the nearest and match up. Sometimes you don't get to that guy quick enough and he makes the tackle or gets an offensive rebound. Every scheme has pros and cons, and that's one thing you live with running that zone. It's obviously much more beneficial to run the zone than it has been to abandon it, so it's still a net positive.

Re: Rebounds and Free Throws
When do we begin to employ the "Tap Out", which UNLV did really well, as did SJSU and BSU. I think we can count on one
hand how many times we've done this all year. Aubin doesn't even look prepared to rebound, or attempt to box out.
Someone else said it, but I really don't think his game translates to a more competitive conference. We need help with the BIGS, but I stand on the idea that Aubin is not starter caliber, but I would still get him 10-12 min a game to rest Templin or Johnson. I'm no Calhoun, but I think the liabilities between Fish and Aubin are equally bad, but one gets us more 2nd chance opportunities, which is more value in my eyes.

Re: Rebounds and Free Throws
Fish is actually an underrated rebounder when he gets time to play. I don't think it is his strength or technique either but his ability to read the shot and be in the right place combined with his height and ability to rebound with two hands high above everyone without bringing the ball down. Aubin seems to almost always be off balance or crouched to keep his balance which makes him seem smaller. I do like his ability to play above the rim with the lobs on offense, this is where he excels. Fish is no above the rim player but he is a great shooter from just about anywhere on the court. Wish we had a morph of the two.

Re: Rebounds and Free Throws
I don't know, on the season we plus 4.6 on the rebound margin. UNLV was just a low energy game.Ahbye wrote: ↑January 16th, 2025, 4:18 pmWe're always going to be down a few rebounds playing a zone defense.
