Boise media
Not sure who is on with BJ Raines on livestream before game but this is what I caught in my 5 minutes of watching
only good team USU played in conference is SDSU - same team that beat Boise at home and USU beat on road
USU had a very weak preseason schedule - ignoring face Boise lost to Q4 and have no god road wins. USU 6-1 Q1/Q2 and Boise is 2-3. How about Iowa win on “neutral” floor and @St Marys the same team Boise won by 2 on “neutral” floor
Basically although USU is 15-1 basically a paper tiger that hasn’t played anyone
Omar Stanley is back from his slump
USU does the same chants from the 90’s
Please aggies beat the hell out of the Broncos tonight

If USU hadn't played anyone before tonight, then tonight's game didn't change that.SpectrumMagic wrote: ↑January 11th, 2025, 6:23 pmNot sure who is on with BJ Raines on livestream before game but this is what I caught in my 5 minutes of watching

He was tweeting it was the loudest atmosphere he's been in doing basketball games.
It was a loud game, but not as loud as New Mexico in the Spectrum last year. Not a ears ringing kind of game, for me at least

Re: Boise media
Would have gotten louder, but there were really very few extended runs that built up that Spectrum momentum and it seemed like every single time Boise would finally miss a three, they'd just get the rebound and get two. Frustrating but entertaining game to be sure.

BJ now alleging on Twitter that the inbounds right before Ian's shot should've been a 5 second call.

Re: Boise media
Boise played about as good as they possibly could have tonight, and it still wasn't enough to beat USU. They shot 54% from three, out-rebounded the Aggies by 6 (9-3 advantage on the offensive boards), and only turned it over 7 times.

Actually had good takes. The players he interviewed (Degenhart, Javon B, and Leon) were all good. I didn't hear any whining. He shot back at commenters about takes on Leon and that their defense needs to improve.

Yep credit to Boise they nailed 3 pointers - hit nothing but net so many times or grabbed boards on the few misses. Never let the crowd or our guys get full momentumBigBlueAggie wrote: ↑January 11th, 2025, 11:00 pmWould have gotten louder, but there were really very few extended runs that built up that Spectrum momentum and it seemed like every single time Boise would finally miss a three, they'd just get the rebound and get two. Re: Boise media
I listened to his post game show where he interviewed Rice and some players. BJ was very high on the environment. He mentioned in 12 years covering Boise State this is the loudest he has ever been in. Leon mentioned the same thing in all of his years coming to the spectrum this was the loudest it's ever been.

Re: Boise media
For those that were there
How did the noise level in this game compare to some of the loudest games of the past ( Nevada, Utah, Boise to win the 19th straight, etc.)?
Coming through the TV, it didn't seem as loud as this games.

It got so loud that Leon was holding up fingers (1-5) on inbounds plays… then the players would check the inside of their shorts where they had written down what play was tied with each number. If that makes sense.

Yep. I went back and watched the replay just after the game to check for this. The call went in right as the ref’s arm extended for the fifth time. The final inbound was not a five-second violation. He has five seconds to inbound, not four. The official never got to five - came very close, but didn't get to five seconds.

Re: Boise media
The official extended his arm 5 times. It’s plain as day in the video. He then extended it a 6th time as the ball went in. He was going to call 5 seconds and let the play go. I stopped the best video I saw on twitter (right next to Drake) in slow motion and 5 seconds into the video Drake released the ball. The video started part way through the refs first 1 second count.
It was a violation by the letter of the law.

Re: Boise media
Are you sure? Because every video I’ve seen shows that the ball was inbounded on the 5th second. Refs are never going to whistle at the exact same time as their fifth count.dyedblue wrote: ↑January 12th, 2025, 7:36 amThe official extended his arm 5 times. It’s plain as day in the video. Re: Boise media
Nope. I've rewatched it a dozen times on the CBS feed where the official is in a clear line of sight the entire time. The ball goes in as he's extending his arm for the fifth time. The player has five seconds to get it in. If this were a clock, I'd say he threw the ball in at about the 4.8 second mark.dyedblue wrote: ↑January 12th, 2025, 7:36 amThe official extended his arm 5 times. It’s plain as day in the video. the ball was given to Allen at 2 seconds, and Martinez catches it at 7
but the ref definitely does 5 arm shakes before the ball is caught.

One other thought. The ref seems to start very fast. It almost seems like he was at 1 almost the same time Drake gets the ball. I am sure someone has put a timer to it?!

Leon always says the right thing a before and after games. It’s like he has a switch that turns him into a whiny b**** during the games, but outside the game he’s really level-headed. I always want to hate him, but can’t find it in me after the buzzer.

Yes I noticed that to, not sure that is something this ref does as a "starting" point. I have not ran a timer to the whistle but just counting out loud it seems very close and it may be slightly at or just over 5 seconds

Re: Boise media
Regarding ref counting technique for 5 seconds, I had a discussion about this many years ago with a friends who spent decades reffing HS basketball. He said that most refs like the technique where you start the count with your arm extended. His rationale was that if you start with your hand at your body, then it is too easy to have the first count be a different duration that the remaining counts. The first would only go from body to extended, but the rest have to go from extended-to-body-to-extended. If you start extended and then do extended-to-body-to-extended for all 5 counts, it makes it easier to kindof have a muscle memory for counting correctly.SpectrumMagic wrote: ↑January 12th, 2025, 8:59 amYes I noticed that to, not sure that is something this ref does as a "starting" point. Not sure if this is how the ref did it, but might account for some thinking it was at a differing number if counts. He may not have started counting until the first time he had his hand in the extended position.
