Craig Smith
Been seeing Utah fans online say he should be fired after this season and thought it was interesting. This led me to looking at bracketologists today and it seems crazy that Utah doesn’t even have a quad 3 win yet. I’m convinced someone in this forum has put a curse on our former coaches.

Re: Craig Smith
I have said it before and I will say it again. Craig Smith always has been and always will be an Aggie. One of the best Aggie coaches of all time, not only for what he did while he was here, but also for what he has done since he left. utah paid him 12 million dollars to "coach" their basketball team, and he did what any good Aggie would do, take the money, and ran the program into the ground. There is no convincing me that he did not go to salt lake and suck intentionally.
Instead of making fun of him, we should all be cheering him for the hero that he is.

Re: Craig Smith
Craig can suck it. He is not, not ever was an Aggie. Just like Sprinkle, Odom, GA, and Eustacy. They are all mercenaries. I can’t blame them for chasing the bag, but 99% of all coaches are mercenaries. Stew is the exception. The jury is out on whether Calhoun is an Aggie, but he is one helluva coach.

He will be gone after this year. Right now Utah is a terrible job to take. They have zero homecourt advantage and their fan attendance is really bad. It is a beautiful thing to watch, that is of course they came and poached Calhoun.

Re: Craig Smith
All sarcasm aside, Smith was the right choice coming out of the Diarrhea years. His unbridled enthusiasm, almost used car salesmanship, was infectious and needed to inject some emotion into the program which actually, was in a funk dating to Stew's final few years as he was checking out.
I don't begrudge him one bit for chasing the paycheck, especially as he wasn't a Logan native to begin with. Give me the right offer and I'll pick my family up and move tomorrow.

He for sure was the right pick after Tim. The energy he infused into the program was awesome it allowed us to turn the ship around. I hate he went to Utah but am thankful for what he did while in Logan.FloridaAggie13 wrote: ↑January 10th, 2025, 7:51 amAll sarcasm aside, Smith was the right choice coming out of the Diarrhea years. Wouldn’t it be a thing if they went for Odom? I’d be super interested to see if we could keep him if he became their #1 target. It would be a wild ride on so many levels.

Re: Craig Smith
I know we want to diminish everything he does now because he left us, but objectively speaking he’s just done his job. And his job is the University of Utah head basketball coach, which is nothing special. And he has done nothing special since he’s been there. So how do fans complain about him doing what he’s paid to do?
Does that make it any less of a mistake for him to leave? Not at all. But at least he got his money. I guess.

I seriously doubt they go after someone at USU again for a long time.
Not sure where they go. If I were them I would go after Pitino at New Mexico, that would likely be best case scenario for utah, someone out west that is a little slimmy, the cultural fit works. But I bet Pitino has better offers.
utah fans keep hoping for Alex Jenson or Johnnie Bryant but with how well the Kevin Young experiment is going at byu, I wonder if that quites that crowd. Not to mention it seems like both those guys turned down the job last time around.

Re: Craig Smith
I agree. I get why some people are upset he left for Utah, but at the same time I don't get the lingering bitterness. He made the right financial decision at the time. And we have remained a top-tier team in the conference with a NCAA tournament win under our belt. It worked out for both of us.LarryTheAggie wrote: ↑January 10th, 2025, 5:44 amI have said it before and I will say it again. Craig Smith always has been and always will be an Aggie. Personally, I'm grateful for Coach Smith. He brought us back from the grave of mediocrity. He won us two MWC Championships. He beat multiple Top-10 opponents. He brought back the Spectrum Magic and established a winning culture for the following coaches. He'll go down as an Aggie Legend in my book.

Re: Craig Smith
I still can't believe that Minnesota passed on Craig. He would have been the perfect coach for them, but they completely whiffed and went for a former player instead who has been pretty awful.
I'll always believe that the job Craig did here should have netted him a much better job than Utah, so in that sense I kind of feel bad for him.

Re: Craig Smith
I would love for someone to do a serious sit down interview with him after he is let go at utah. I'd like to hear his honest opinion about the differences between his stays at both schools including the support he received. I'd also like to know if he has any regrets about not staying knowing what USU has done since, and heading to the PAC, and the kind of salary that could have been had. I think he and his family truly loved it in Logan and would have loved to stay if it weren't for the money being offered.
He made the right move at the time for his family but if he loved it as much as I think he did, it has to sting to watch what is still going on in Logan.

The huntsman center is the worst basketball arena I have been to. It's my greatest fear when we talk about the spectrum.
