I HATE THE NET

Post by FeartheFro » January 4th, 2025, 11:16 pm

I can’t even enjoy a win anymore as all I can think about is we didn’t win by enough and our Net is going to drop.

It for sure is a catch 22 in terms of how you feel about wins. Obviously you want wins but then also know you need to perform well against the metrics or your NET can go down even with a win. On the flip side the NET rankings have been nothing but awesome to the Aggies. It actually levels the playing field a little more and we have benefitted overall really well from the switch to the NET.

The NET was always around. Before it was just called the “eye-test”. Winning at home to a bad team would still drop you. That version of the NET though was extremely biased. The new NET is a lot better.

Just win baby.

Don’t worry about the NET. It only impacts our opponents, not us.

We used to have RPI, now we have NET. At the end of the day our opponents NET matters more than ours. If we have 4-5 Q1 wins and no Q3/Q4 losses we'll be fine.

100% agree, we are going to take a few losses in conference just cannot have those Q3/Q4 losses. Avoid those and with our non conference performance we will be in a great spot.

I was getting just a bit nervous looking at a Q4 loss tonight. Spectrum magic came through, though. And Templin and Allen.

I sympathize but I'm still just so psyched about the Aggie basketball that we are seeing this year. What a season.

5 point drop. That's rounding error, basically. If we drop out of the top 40-50 I might get slightly concerned, particularly if we pick up iffy losses in conference play. Otherwise these small movements are just noise.

If looking at USU's drop has you down, take a look at BYU after getting boat raced by Houston. Ryan Smith's millions have bought them a NET of #48, 0 Q1 wins, and 1 Q2 win. They're not even a tournament team right now. They obviously have the talent to right the ship, and I don't want to tempt the message board gods. But watching them spend millions and accomplish nothing in the first half of the season has been so much fun to watch.

Well said. I’ll take a 6 point win over a bad team vs. what I saw from BYU and Utah yesterday. Both got hammered by 30 points. We’re spoiled as Aggie fans and whining about a win and we’re 14-1 with our one loss by 2 points.

Although I understand (and share) the mindset, I think we all agree that winning and dropping in the NET is better than losing and going up would be. So I try to remember that.

I love the net- I think it's fun to see where we stand and where all the other opponents and casual favorites stand -each day.
I don't mind a few drops here and there because IMO it's not that big of a deal to be 29-35 compared to 20-28 at this point of the season

I get a kick out of how being in a six-way tie at 1-1 is perceived as a tie for sixth place, when it is just as easily a tie for 11th. Worth every penny of their millions - for my own (and others) enjoyment.

Fresno is a terrible team (according to the net), just playing them would make us drop a little. We should have RUTS but we were post-holiday sloppy. Forgivable given that we won but we need to take care of buisness going forward especially against SJSU.

I understand the importance of the Net. My best comparison of how it makes me feel is when I have money on a game (as I did with this one) and being mad with a win because they didn’t cover. The Net concern absolutely takes away part of my joy of winning. I understand it’s my problem.

Seems like enough recent history to bet on FS to cover instead of US.

I love the NET. It has helped mid-majors far more than it has hurt them. Our best tourney seeds have come in the NET era. It also adds another fun element to track throughout the season.

I follow the NET like I track my investment holdings. It’s just a fun thing to monitor and you can’t sweat the day-to-day changes too much. Dropping 5 spots in the NET just means there’s room to move up after the next game and hopefully it adds some motivation!

What helps even more is that SDSU now has two Q1 wins and a #35 NET, so they are looking more like a single-digit seed than a bubble team. A road win against a tournament-caliber team helps USU a lot.

FWIW (and it's probably not much), Massey https://masseyratings.com/cb/ncaa-d1/ratings had USU move up 4 spots to #18.

North Texas was hanging around with Memphis for a little bit, looking like the tigers are going to roll now.

Quotation for all you net gurus. Is it possible for us to drop a lot in the net even if we win all our remaining games, but never cover another spread?

I suppose it’s possible, but I’d say not likely. I know we talk about betting spreads, but really it’s efficiency ratings that make up that component of the NET. For example, our defensive efficiency rating took a hit last night, which is really what impacted it. Winning percentage is also a key component, so wins will ultimately help you.

While Vegas spreads don't matter, KenPom has projections of how games should go based on efficiency reasons and Vegas is typically very close to those projections. If we aren't covering that spread then that means that either our offense or defense or both aren't performing at the levels expected and the efficiencies will adjust accordingly. The spreads are just a data point to tell us how we're expected to perform.

Aggies hold steady at 29

ST B moved up one spot to 51 (1 spot from Q1)
North texas moved up 7 spots to 69
Iowa moved back 2 spots to 58
St Marys moved 1 spot to 49

Kansas didnt play and moved 11 spots from 21 to 10

There must be really small numbers separating 10-25+ in the net. Similar to 40-55 range.
