22 Utah St.
Last week: No. 25 -- It took a last-second shot, but Utah State downed Boise State on Saturday night by a final score of 81-79 to stay perfect in MWC play. The Aggies are 16-1 and squarely out of the shadows of a sleeper, trending closer and closer toward being considered a serious factor in March.

Re: Rankings Watch
My guess from AP is we move to 23 or 24, depending on how many new ballots we appear on, which can determine whether Arizona jumps us.

Up to 22 in the coaches poll, would expect a similar number in the AP poll probably going to be 22 or 23

22 in the AP poll as well, let's take care of business against UNLV on Wednesday and let teams ahead of us lose this week and weekend and keep climbing!

1 voter had us as high as 12 today while 7 left us unranked. The SDSU voter finally included us in the 25 spot.

But if he really wants to help his team, he’d, logically, want to elevate USU as much as possible. But then how spiteful is he? Maybe he wants USU to fail so bad he’ll try to diminish USU to the point SDSU can tally up an at home loss to a Q2 instead of a Q1. Maybe he could really stick it to USU and marginalize them even more. Make that Viejas loss as painful as possible!

Re: Rankings Watch
What determines who gets to vote in the AP rankings? I'm assuming it is sports reporters, but there are way more of them then there are voters.

Re: Rankings Watch
https://apnews.com/article/how-ap-top-2 ... 23eb64b73dAP Top 25 voters are writers and broadcasters who cover college football for organizations that are members of the AP.
AP employees do not vote, but they do choose the voters. In recent years, the number of voters has been around 63, and they come from all over the country.
Every state with a Bowl Subdivision school is represented by at least one voter, and the total of number of voters from each state increases with the number of FBS teams. There are also four spots reserved for national voters.
The biggest thing is that they have to work for an organization that is an AP member. We've had several voters leave their organization and lose their vote. BJ Rains had a vote until he broke away and started his own news site. The description is for football but it's the same for basketball. Very few voters do both basketball and football.

Re: Rankings Watch
We've been fortunate with teams around us losing.
15 Mississippi State lost to auburn about to beat Ole Miss
16 Gonzaga lost to Oregon state
17 purdue beat 13 Oregon
18 Memphis lost to temple
19 Illinois beat Indiana
20 Michigan lost to Minnesota
21 ole miss beat Alabama but is about to lose to Mississippi state
22 USU
23 Georgia lost to Tennessee and Auburn
24 Wisconsin beat usc and OSU
25 Baylor lost to Arizona
26 st Johns beat Georgetown and leading Seton Hall
27 Oklahoma lost to Texas beat south Carolina
28 WVU huge win vs ISU but lost to houston
29 Arizona neat Baylor but lost to Texas tech
30 Louisville beat Syracuse and Virginia
So 10/15 teams lost at least one, though some had good wins to make up for it.
Had we won AT UNLV and beat Nevada next week, I think we'd be borderline top 15. We can likely work our way back up if we string some wins together.

Based on those results, the Aggies will be 25 or 26 in the next rankings.
In addition to the list on the preceding post, the following ranked teams also lost this week:
2, 4 through 9, 11, 13 and 14

Auburn is now the only remaining one-loss team. There are only seven two-loss teams, including us. The only one behind us in the NET is UCI. Oh what might have been if Drake hadn't hoisted that ill-advised three when up by 7.

It still chaps my hide that we take a 14 spot slide in the NET for a Q2 win and a Q2 loss. Texas loses 4 out of their last 5 games (albeit all Q1 losses and one Q1 win) and they hold pat in their NET ranking. Heck, UCLA has long 5 out of their last 7 games dating back to Dec 21 and have only had a 22 spot slide in the NET.
But heaven forbid we win a Q2 game against BSU and lose a Q2 game to UNLV, we tumble off a cliff.

Re: Rankings Watch
We were favored to beat BSU by 4.5 and UNLV by 5.5. If you underperform expectations, that hurts your NET even if you win against a good team. (Note: NET is based on offensive/defensive efficiency, not point spread, although they are closely related.) Plus it looks like several teams passed us. We only dropped two spots after the BSU game and 6 spots after the UNLV game.jpswensen wrote: ↑January 19th, 2025, 11:21 amIt still chaps my hide that we take a 14 spot slide in the NET for a Q2 win and a Q2 loss. Re: Rankings Watch
This week I just looked at team within 5 spots ahead of us or ranked 21-25 if we weren't ranked. There are 62 ballots, the following teams are within 5 spots of us on the most ballots
Louisville (39)
West Virginia (33)
St Johns (32)
Missouri (31)
Memphis (32)
Michigan (26)
Texas Tech (22)
UCONN (17)
Wisconsin (15)
Georgia (11), Illinois (11), Ole Miss (9), Oregon (8), Vanderbilt (8), Gonzaga (7), Clemson (6), Miss St (5), Texas A&M (3), St. Mary's (3), UCI(3), Arizona (2), Creighton (2), Baylor (1), Bradley (1), Cincy (1), Houston (1), Kansas (1), Kentucky (1), Marquette (1) Maryland (1), Purdue (1), Wake Forest (1).
These are the teams we want to lose if we want to be ranked again. Of course, any team ahead of us could eventually fall down with enough losses but we I'd rather the top 10-15 teams lose to teams with bad records and not anyone on this list.
West Virginia, Missouri, Wisconsin, Georgia, Cincinnati, Ole Miss, Miss. St, Purdue, Vanderbilt and have already lost this week. Assuming we beat Air Force and assuming we get back on ballots we should be in good place to move back to #25 or higher if other teams lose or a few teams lose twice.

Vanderbilt beat UK at home they most likely jump into top 25 along with TT. Texas beat two ranked teams at home will get quite a few votes
Oregon loses at Minnesota

Ole Miss (16) and WVU (23) have lost twice this week. Michigan (21) lost by 27 in their only game, as has been mentioned. USU should pass up Michigan and WVU, and maybe Ole Miss who has lost three straight
Illinois (17) and Wisconsin (18) could also drop behind USU if they go 0-2 this week by losing tomorrow.
The only unranked teams that might into the top 25 are Texas Tech (26), USU (27), Vandy (28) and Gonzaga (29 but hasn’t played yet this week).

The board arbiter on an things basketball, Stanford Aggie, has some wise words for this discussion:
Right now, a small increase in ranking and 50 cents will buy us a doughnut. It is almost completely meaningless right now. This board's obsession with small movements in ranking is weird. 3-0 in Q1, 8-2 in Q1/Q2, and 8-1/tied for first in the MWC are the numbers that I care about.

I did hear an announcer say specifically the top 25 is more of a name recognition bonus than anything else. Name scrolling on bottoms of other games and more free pub. I agree
