Re: ALL the Point Guards?
Housley's low 3-point shooting percentage might have been partly due to playing 34.6 minutes per game which is close to Darius Brown's amount of minutes (36).
February to March
He went 10/49 from 3 (20.4%).
Before that, he was 31/102 (30.4%)
It is a bit extreme to ask a player who is in 1 year removed from his mission and first year playing regular season college basketball to play 34.6 minutes per game.
He scored 20 or more points 4 times early in the season before conference play. His 3-point percentage went up early in season then went down with in-conference play.

Re: ALL the Point Guards?
Depends how you look at it. It is a huge improvement from the 23% point shooting from our earlier PG signing.TrueAggieman wrote: ↑April 30th, 2024, 11:25 am27.2% is elite?3rdGenAggie wrote: ↑April 30th, 2024, 11:22 amSeems like a position we really don't need, except that he's a RS freshman and could be a bench guy now while he develops for the future.
Again, unsure about this guy's legitimacy.

Once Carter Welling is announced you have your rotation set.Aggie in Boise wrote: ↑April 30th, 2024, 1:44 pmDoes the coaching staff have anything in the works to bring on one or two strong bigs that can defend and rebound?

Re: ALL the Point Guards?
I don't either, though I'll trust in Coach/those who know better. But my concerns remain. Last season, Housley was 37.4% for all FGs, only 27.2% from 3-pt range, and only 62.9% from the charity stripe. He fouled out 3 times last season and had 4 fouls ten other times during the season. His assist-to-turnover ratio was only 1.59. All of those numbers drop a little when removing his stats against D2 opponents.
On the positive side, he started every game, played 35+ minutes for most games, and got 1.6 steals/game against D1 opponents. He did all this as a redshirt freshman.
Is the idea here that he's gotten some good development in the past year, and he'll look really good over the next few years? Because his stats from last year make it seem like he's an okay player who just got a lot of PT. I mean, Javon Jackson's shooting percentages were higher across the board. It's hard to extrapolate, but his rebounds, assists, and turnovers were all a little lower. If Jackson averaged 35.5 minutes/game in the WAC, not only would his shooting percentage go up, all of his stats would increase (more than just proportionately). But again, I don't know. Can someone tell me why this is an upgrade?

Re: ALL the Point Guards?
Likely a deep bench player on next year’s squad. Meh.
I probably would have preferred offering both Welling bros, honestly. Hayden Welling would at least be a break glass in case of emergency type player and brings some positional versatility with some length.
We have guards for days already.

Ehhhh. Without any inside knowledge, I strongly suspect this guy will be pretty far towards the end of the bench. You can't have a team of 15 all-conference caliber guys every year, eventually a loaded depth chart is going to affect your ability to recruit studs. We already have an extremely strong top 7-8, not every signing is going to blow people away.

Re: ALL the Point Guards?
My hope is someone on the staff knows him and his game well, and sees something in him they’re convinced is gonna make him the next Aggie PG legend. I agree with a lot of the opinions shared… I would have loved to see Javon stay between the 2, but in Calhoun I trust. There’s gotta be a good reason for the offer. Calhoun does supposedly have a knack for developing players.

Re: ALL the Point Guards?
It's just the same sort of guy as Drake Allen: a mediocre shooter who happened to get lots of minutes. Idk, they just don't seem like scholarship guys.
Maybe it'll run really well in Calhoun's system with a bunch of high-energy guards subbing in and out. I mean, I could understand a scenario where you aren't looking for shooters. A team of Mason Falslev-esque guards would be awesome. But Mason—not a renowned shooter—has better shooting percentages across the board than Housley. Mason also has more rebounds and a better assist-to-turnover ratio. Hell, Great Osobor (and Karson Templin) have better FT% than this guy.
Hopefully this kid brings much more than what's on paper. Maybe he'll have a big jump in the off-season and thrive in a more competitive environment. Either way, I'll quit complaining for now.
I just saw Chatman's comment. Good defense is certainly a plus.

Re: ALL the Point Guards?
We’ve come a long way from starting Abel Porter at point guard to complaining about guys who led their team in scoring (Allen) and assists (Allen and Housley) as our 2nd and 3rd string PGs. Oh and both are 6’4
Housley put up 23/5 on Utah, 11/3 on us.
Imagine if Brown got hurt last year, we would’ve been absolutely (I can't express myself without swearing) and 100% not made the tournament

Re: ALL the Point Guards?
We got local experienced guys for the end of the bench and insurance in case of injury. I see no problem with that.

Had to double check and make sure it wasn’t SLB who posted this… hopefully you’re right. But we also have to trust this coaching staff. If they can develop him over the next year, then great. He has the size, and hopefully the athleticism.

This. I consider it a major steal and will benefit us in practice this year.MetsJetsAggies wrote: ↑April 30th, 2024, 6:49 pmWe’ve come a long way from starting Abel Porter at point guard to complaining about guys who led their team in scoring (Allen) and assists (Allen and Housley) as our 2nd and 3rd string PGs. Re: ALL the Point Guards?
I believe this was the case with Great. Stepped into a different role and blossomed. He wasn't originally recruited by the likes of his suitors now. Let's see what happens. We might have some surprises with a better supporting cast, less time on the floor or more time.ImportAggie wrote: ↑April 30th, 2024, 4:43 pmMy hope is someone on the staff knows him and his game well, and sees something in him they’re convinced is gonna make him the next Aggie PG legend. Re: ALL the Point Guards?
Agreed. You can’t predict our team by adding up the stats of the players from previous seasons (even if you convert them to per 30 minutes )
The job of the coaches is to make them into a team and find the roles that are best for each player.
