"If Coach Calhoun were to terminate the agreement for convenience (i.e. Calhoun leaves for another position elsewhere) before the completion of his first year at Utah State (on or before March 31, 2025), the buyout starts out at 80% of the remaining cumulative total compensation owed. If he were to leave on or after April 1, 2025, the buyout is reduced to 60% of the remaining total compensation on his contract. So if Calhoun were to leave after his second year at Utah State, he would be required to pay USU a buyout of $1,800,000 ($3,000,000 * .60)."

I wish we could change the buyout lowering date to May 1. March Madness is still going on and coaches leave in early April all the time. Danny did us a favor leaving in mid-March, but another school might not.

That extra 220 thousand for assistant coaches is a big deal. We could poach coaches with that money.

With Danny it didn't matter when he left as long as it was before the completion of his second season it was 75% of the remaining salary.

In all reality the 80% number will never be achieved with Calhoun unless he leaves during his first year. If he gets poached after the first year he'll just wait until April 1 to sign and only pay 60%.

The buyout dates should be based on the academic year.

Wow, wonder why the assistant salary pool changed so much.

Were we sub-par compared to the rest of the conference? Was it part of hiring Calhoun?

Didn't they just recently up the number of assistant coaches from 3 to 5? In that case they almost have to increase the salary pool. In terms of salary per assistant it is actually a decrease 530,000/ 3 is 176,000 and now 750,000/5 is 150,000. But that is assuming that he actually hires 5 coaches and that they are all paid the same.

I guess last year is not the comparison I should be making because they changed the rule last year, and Sprinkle only had 4 assistants. Now we can afford the 5th.

What was Odoms assistant pool?

The 4th/5th can’t recruit from what I understand so they shouldn’t be receiving as much money.

They did, but while you technically could go add two new staff members, most schools have instead just had their DOBO/video coordinator/director of personnel/etc. take on a few more traditional coaching responsibilities since they’re now allowed to.

I am curious with how the extra 220K spent on assistant coaches plays out. It opens the door to poach assistant coaches from other schools.

I wonder if we could get Tim and Larry to come back?
