If this team makes some noise in March...

Post by YouEssYou » November 22nd, 2023, 10:00 am

I know this is way too early, but go with me for a minute. What does it mean for college bball in the future if this team makes a tourney run? I think it only expounds the problems/greatness/and whatever else of the transfer portal. If a new coach can throw together a team that had zero returning points/production and in less than a year make the tournament, I think you are going to see the death (not that we haven't already to a degree) of the "let's recruit high school kids and develop them for a couple of years to take over the reigns of our program" mentality. Again, I know this is premature, but the team looks pretty good so far and I think they still have room to improve and gel together.

It’s weird to say but I think programs like USU are in a much better position picking up transfers than recruiting out of HS. We don’t have to worry about them transferring out again as much, and we offer one of the best home court atmospheres in a very good conference with a good chance to play minutes on a tourney team, we should be attractive to solid transfers. Yeah it’s nice to get HS recruits and develop them, but it’s just a lot riskier for programs like us who will have power conf schools with way more NIL money hawking any guy who has success here as a freshman/sophomore.

This. I think the transfer portal rules actually end up being a net positive for us in basketball (but a net negative in football).
