Looking a level deeper
A lot has been made of the fact that USU has no returning minutes from last year.
The next level of analysis would be to look at who had DI minutes somewhere else last year.
USU had 8 players that logged double-digit minutes last night. 3 of them were not playing DI last year. And Max didn't play the last month or so. A case could be made that Falslev, Johnson, Templin and (perhaps) Max all have potentially significant improvement to come as they adjust to playing DI - whether for the first time or after a break.

Re: Looking a level deeper
I think there will be some stiff competition but I'd certainly put him in the top 3-5 candidates at this point. A lot will come to conference play. Is Mason a role player with a few breakout games or does he become the 2nd leading scorer and one of your go-to guys at the end of the game?aggies22 wrote: ↑November 22nd, 2023, 9:05 amNVspuds prediction of Mason being Freshman of the Year might pull through.SectionBAggie wrote: ↑November 22nd, 2023, 8:22 amA lot has been made of the fact that USU has no returning minutes from last year.

It's too early for Mason to be a go-to guy BUT he's going to be a guy that gets us to the end of games. I told you guys he was going to be a dude!Coloraggie wrote: ↑November 22nd, 2023, 9:12 amI think there will be some stiff competition but I'd certainly put him in the top 3-5 candidates at this point. Can you still be eligible for freshman of the year if you are 27?aggies22 wrote:NVspuds prediction of Mason being Freshman of the Year might pull through.SectionBAggie wrote: ↑November 22nd, 2023, 8:22 amA lot has been made of the fact that USU has no returning minutes from last year.

Re: Looking a level deeper
Any of us can make a prediction. Some are right more than others but it is a little like throwing darts at a dartboard. Some Like Bragging & feel inclined to let everyone know when they hit the bullseye.
Anyone keeping score?

Re: Looking a level deeper
Here is a player who may well emerge as a FOY candidate.
Jazz Gardner is averaging 7.5 points a game along with 4.8 rebounds. He is 63 percent from the field and 40 percent from the 3..
Certainly modest numbers to be sure.
Until you factor in he is averaging just 11.3 minutes a game. Alford has been easing him in slowly but I suspect he will be getting starter minutes before too long. We could be looking at a double double type center in conference play.

Other freshman that I’ve noticed that are standing out:
JT Toppin (unm): quickly has become the lobos best big man. Averaging 15/9. Best freshman in the league thus far.
Dedan Thomas (unlv): Averaging 11/6 assists per game
Mason Falslev: 11 pts, 5 rebounds and 4 assists per game.
Cam Manyawu (Wyoming): averaging 10/8. Expect his numbers to go down some once mason Walters returns from his injury around conference time.

Re: Looking a level deeper
There is still a lot of season to go to separate the numbers. But if it is close do you give it to the guy on the best team? Or do you penalize that and give it to the guy on the worst team who had to carry the load?
