MW Basketball Preview - SJSU

Post by slcagg » October 6th, 2023, 2:25 pm

San Jose State
Expectation for season: Bottom 3rd of the league

Notes: SJSU lost MW player of the year Omari Moore and their starting frontcourt specifically Diallo which anchored them defensively. They return their really good pg in Cardenas and returning starter Trey Anderson. Also return solid back ups in Forward Gorener and Vaihola
Expected Starters: Alvaro Cardenas, MJ Amey, Trey Anderson, Tibot Gorener, Robert Vaihola
Bench: Rickey Mitchell, Garrett Anderson, Adrame Diongue, Will Humer

Returners:
Myron Amey: Returning guard who averaged 6 ppg last year before injury and 9 ppg the year prior
Garrett Anderson: Returning bench wing. Averaged 2 ppg as a freshman came on later in the year as opportunities arose
Tibet Goroner: Went for 20 against the aggies last year (6-9 from 3 in that game). A wing/big man. Averaged overall 7 ppg coming off the bench. Originally transferred from Arizona
Alvaro Cardenas: Returning starting pg. Averaged 10 ppg last year.
Trey Anderson: Starter on the wing averaging 6 ppg. Previously transferred from South Carolina
Robert Vaihola: Top bench guy last year who averaged 8 ppg and 7 rpg. Originally played at Fresno

Newcomers:
Rickey Mitchell: Freshman guard from Colorado who led 6A scoring at 26 ppg
Adrame Diongue: Sophomore transfer from Washington State. Raw big man with great length and great blocking ability
Latrell Davis: Freshman guard from England
Pasha Goodarzi: Freshman guard from California
Iggy Mitchell: Freshman guard from Australia
Christian Wise: Freshman wing
Will Humer: JC big who initially played at Nebraska
Diego Seixas: Wing player from Europe. Averaged 18 ppg at the U18 world championships, shot 44% from 3.

Key Losses:
Ibrahima Diallo: Starting center, a force in the middle defensively. Transferred to UCF.
Sage Tolbert: Big man who averaged 8 ppg and 7 rpg
Omari Moore: MW Player of the year. Moved on to the NBA

By the end of the year Vaihola was getting more minutes than Diallo and finishing games. Losing Moore will hurt but if the rest of the team progresses and they get decent contributions from newcomers I think Miles can get this team to a 5-7 place finish.

I had Vaihola on an all-conference team. With him out SJSU will seemingly go back to competing with Air Force for the 10th seed in the MWC Tourney.

It always sucks to lose a top player, but he hasn’t played yet this year. They have a good win over UC Irvine and are playing good ball right now. I wouldn’t write them off completely as they are showing they can do it without him. Would be great for them to have gotten him back by conference play or something of course.
