Bairstow at point: Thoughts?
@Roy McAvoy and I were discussing this as a possibility. He’s better with the ball than Shulga, has a good outside and inside game and he’s huge (for a point). Ashworth has done a great job at point but he gets worn out and I think he’s way better coming off ball screens and knocking down 3s. If Rylan isn’t coming back anytime soon, is this a feasible idea or am I dumb for even thinking it?
Would a combo of he, Shulga and Ashworth be a decent idea?

I lean towards maintaining status quo. We have a few years of sample size of Bairstow as primary ballhandler and returns weren’t great.

Am I mis remembering? I don’t remember Bairstow playing point at all with Craig Smith.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑February 5th, 2023, 10:51 amI lean towards maintaining status quo. We have a few years of sample size of Bairstow as primary ballhandler and returns weren’t great.
Last night though Bairstow had plenty of primary ball handling duties and he played really really well. It also really frees up Ashworth.

I definitely remember a lot of message board talk about Bairstow potentially playing PG, but I don’t recall how often it actually happened in games. Pretty sure he played point at least a little bit but Smith had a very short leash.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑February 5th, 2023, 10:59 amAm I mis remembering? I like the status quo too. Bairstow is perfect as a secondary ball-handler/initiator to take the heat off Ashworth and Shulga. No reason to overextend him.

The intent of the Craig Smith coaching staff was to eventually transition Bairstow to point guard.MarioWest wrote: ↑February 5th, 2023, 11:26 amI definitely remember a lot of message board talk about Bairstow potentially playing PG, but I don’t recall how often it actually happened in games. Re: Bairstow at point: Thoughts?
I like the idea of adding Bairstow to the rotation w/ Shulga and Ashworth. Even if it is only 2 or 3 times per game to test it out.
Recently as Bairstow has been more involved and getting more touches he has improved play. I think we are witnessing this partially because of Jones being out. He has more ball handling and driving responsibility without Jones in the game. Perhaps we don’t get this from Bairstow without the Jones injury. He has really stepped up.

Did you watch the game against csu last night? Bairstow initiated the offense and basically acted as the PG a bunch.nswaggie wrote: ↑February 5th, 2023, 1:18 pmI like the idea of adding Bairstow to the rotation w/ Shulga and Ashworth. Even if it is only 2 or 3 times per game to test it out.

I like Bairstow or Shulga taking the ball up the court at times when ashworth is on the court. When they start putting pressure than ashworth should have the ball. But yeah, let's not wear out ashworth by doing all the ball handling.

Re: Bairstow at point: Thoughts?
Under Smith, Bairstow primarily played the 2 but they did have him handle the ball quite a bunch. It did appear as if they were trying to groom him into a Pg. Biggest issue was Sean easily became oversped and was a turnover machine at that time. The game hadn’t slowed down for him yet, a lot like Hamoda now. I remember this board lamenting the fact that he handled the ball so much and pleaded that Bairstow slide down to the 3. I do think the game has slowed down for him now and he could successfully handle the ball and initiate the offense more. in past years I would have worried about the offense stalling and the ball sticking to Sean but his 9 assists last game was a good sign. I hate to upset the Apple cart too much but I’d be ok with sliding Sean up to the top for stretches just to change things up, especially when we hit those droughts.

Re: Bairstow at point: Thoughts?
This. Bairstow did play limited point guard under Smith (very limited). And he was VERY VERY turnover prone pretty much up until midway through last season. It hasn't been an issue this year, but it may be because of the way we're using him. I'm not sure if he could effectively handle point guard duties, but I don't think it would be too big of an issue to have him take over at point for 6-8 minutes a game while Ashworth sits.AGGIEinIOWA wrote: ↑February 6th, 2023, 7:06 amUnder Smith, Bairstow primarily played the 2 but they did have him handle the ball quite a bunch. Re: Bairstow at point: Thoughts?
what i like is that whoever, unless it's dorius, grabs the rebound and just takes the ball up the court. when they get a chance they get it off to ashworth or shulga, but by that time they are into the weave at the top of the key and it doesn't matter who has the ball. Even Akin takes off with the ball sometimes, not that i like that but he's not afraid to bring it up court.
the part that is hard is when the other team scores. then if ashworth is bringing it up, he pushes it pretty hard, but shulga does not. maybe if shulga pushed the ball up the court harder/faster it would change our offensive set some more.

Shulga can be a bit too casual passing and ball handling. I think Bairstow is superior in both of these areas.tipitup wrote: ↑February 6th, 2023, 9:28 amwhat i like is that whoever, unless it's dorius, grabs the rebound and just takes the ball up the court. when they get a chance they get it off to ashworth or shulga, but by that time they are into the weave at the top of the key and it doesn't matter who has the ball. Which is crazy to me. Bairstow was a walking turnover before this season but it's like he's a completely different player now.Madmartigan wrote: ↑February 6th, 2023, 9:29 amShulga can be a bit too casual passing and ball handling. Re: Bairstow at point: Thoughts?
players are different each year. sometimes because of work they did in the offseason, sometimes it's teammates get better, sometimes where the coach puts them in the offense/defense. someone may be the rebounding leader one year and the next a transfer comes in that is a rebounding machine, so his responsibilities are different the next year. same with assists, if you have better shooters around you, good passes may lead to a made basket this year that wouldn't have last year, but that didn't mean that he couldn't make the pass the year before, the shooter couldn't hit it. sorry for the ramble.treesap32 wrote: ↑February 6th, 2023, 9:40 amWhich is crazy to me. Bairstow was incredible against CSU. He had a career high 9 assists and only 1 turnover.tipitup wrote: ↑February 6th, 2023, 9:48 amplayers are different each year. sometimes because of work they did in the offseason, sometimes it's teammates get better, sometimes where the coach puts them in the offense/defense. someone may be the rebounding leader one year and the next a transfer comes in that is a rebounding machine, so his responsibilities are different the next year. same with assists, if you have better shooters around you, good passes may lead to a made basket this year that wouldn't have last year, but that didn't mean that he couldn't make the pass the year before, the shooter couldn't hit it. sorry for the ramble.treesap32 wrote: ↑February 6th, 2023, 9:40 amWhich is crazy to me. 37 minutes, 4-8, 3-4 (from 3), 5 boards, 9 assists, 1 turnover, 11 points.
Keep up the good work mate!

Re: Bairstow at point: Thoughts?
My thought is if ain't broke don't fix it. The box score shows Bairstow with 8 assists and Ashworth of course made 9 3s. How much difference does it make if Ashworth is bringing the ball down. The combination was devastating against what CSU trotted out there. If they want to experiment with a different lineup with all 3 together lets do it when things seem to be stagnating and see it if produces a spark.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑February 5th, 2023, 1:41 pmDid you watch the game against csu last night? Re: Bairstow at point: Thoughts?
That's the whole point of the discussion. Apparently it makes a huge difference. When Rylan Jones was running the point, Ashworth's offensive production numbers were higher. It seems when he has to run the offense it really takes away from his offensive output.hickaggie wrote: ↑February 6th, 2023, 11:38 amMy thought is if ain't broke don't fix it. When someone else can run the offense and free up Ashworth to not get worn down, or good looks, and focused on running an offense (whatever it is) it seems to free up Ashworth for him to go off on offense.

Re: Bairstow at point: Thoughts?
All this + Ashworth struggles a bit against big athletic defenders than can push him off the 3 point line. The type of guys that SDSU has in abundance. If Bairstow can be a viable option to give Ashworth a breather + free him up for more open looks we will be tough to beat.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑February 6th, 2023, 11:41 amThat's the whole point of the discussion. No one should dribble up the court. We should just pass it up the court strategically. Run it!

Re: Bairstow at point: Thoughts?
I don't know where Bairstow is with regards to obtaining a degree (and it's really not any of my business so I don't worry about it), but if he has completed his undergrad work and has an opportunity to make money playing pro ball in Australia/New Zealand, I could see him jumping at that. It's tough being away from home for this long. I could see him taking that opportunity, which should be available to him after what he's shown he can do this year. Before his jump in level of play this year, I would have been surprised if he got picked up by a pro team in any league. He has upped his game.
