If we pull off the upset at SDSU...

Post by treesap32 » January 23rd, 2023, 12:42 pm

There will potentially be 4 teams essentially tied for first place in the Mountain West with 2 losses each. It could've been a 5 way tie, but New Mexico plays Nevada tonight so one of those teams will be guaranteed a 3rd loss.

The conference is there for the taking. A win at SDSU would be absolutely enormous. I don't think we will win, but we definitely have a decent shot at it.

I have a sneaking suspicion we win this game. Love the optimism my guy! Let’s go Aggies!

Wish I could be as optimistic about this one but have you seen SDSU? They are huge! and talented at every spot. Their roster is full of guys that have been our kryptonite, guards that are quick and can drive and score in a variety of ways and bigs that will control the paint on both ends.

I was just thinking about this game and wanted to come to the forum to start a similar thread.

If we're going to win this game, we absolutely MUST control the ball better. SDSU is long, good at defense, and they like to clog the passing lanes. I'm very afraid of what that could mean with Shulga as the ball handler. It's probably better to take a bad shot than turn the ball over, leading to a SDSU fast break.

We obviously need to be shooting well.

We need Trev to quit it with the dumb fouls down low. We absolutely need him for as much time as possible in this game.

Don't throw the ball to Zee at all (he's a walking, talking turnover).

Don't throw the ball to Dan too high above the key on a fast break. He has nil handles.

Bairstow and Shulga need to be as dead set on getting to the basket with as much regularity as possible. Driving into the lane, stopping, and kicking it out will lead to massive turnovers. SHOOT THE DAMN BALL.

ESPN has us at about a 20% chance to win. I think it's lower.

One nice thing about sdsu is their Pg is small.

We're going to struggle to score because they'll lock down our guards, and we don't have a big that can force them to double. I think it'll be a lot like that game at Boise unfortunately.

Ding, ding!

We need to abuse their PG and get their bigs into foul trouble.

We could play this game on the moon or wherever, and Lamont Butler will still get 20. I'm afraid that Keshad Johnson will use and abuse Funk. I wonder if we see a lot of Dan and Trev on the floor together.

Our coaching staff has their work cut out for them.

We have match-up problems all over the court. Most notably with Butler, Bradley, and Mensah.

It will be a huge up hill battle for the Aggies. Below would be my big keys to the game.

-Less than 14 turnovers for the Aggies
-Make 11-12 3's while shooting while shooting 45% from 3
-Limit the Aztecs to 7 or fewer made 3's

I wish we had someone like LeDee. Dude is athletic and strong. They don't even give him big minutes but I feel like he's better than the guys that start for them.

Butler, Bradley, Trammell - pick your poison. When guys like Seiko and Arop are now deep bench support, you know they have upgraded their talent.

Isn't Arop hurt? I know he didn't play much against Wyoming.

Unfortunately we're better built for the WCC than for the MW this year. SDSU, Nevada, and Boise are all too big and athletic for us to match up with unless we're red hot from 3 the whole game.

I hope we see more of Shulga at the point (even though he is so dang lax with the ball at times). It makes him a more dangerous offensive threat through the dribble drive and pick and roll, but more importantly, it allows Ashworth to play the 2 where he is much, much more dangerous offensively.

It’s gonna be tough but certainly not impossible. Need to figure out how to score against their stingy defense and also not let them go nuclear on offense at any point. But hey, if Air Force can not totally suck against them, then we certainly have a shot!

SDSU is 8-1 at home. USU is 2-2 away, with the two wins being a narrow win vs San Diego and AFA. Our 2 road losses were getting blown out at Boise and Reno.

If the refs let them play like they did in the USU vs BSU game then we're toast. If the refs call it tight then we have a better chance. We seem to lack hustle and athleticism and need to significantly step up our defense and rebounding, if we want to have a shot at winning this game. It seems like we are not physically strong enough to compete with the tier one teams and unfortunately quite often seem to lack aggressiveness and drive.

I watched the SDSU-CSU game last week. The Rams had that game won. SDSU ratcheted up the defense and got real aggressive on offense in the final 5 minutes to get the game to overtime. If CSU had any type of competent set offense, they would have won that game. The Rams just fell apart. SDSU is certainly beatable, but I don't think we have the horses to do it.

Be interesting to see how it plays out. Boise just man handled the Aggies. Against NEV the Aggies played great until the last 8 minutes when they looked completely lost/gassed. I certainly think the Aggies can beat the Aztecs if they play well but at a minimum i want to see the Aggies compete the whole game and be within 2ish possessions in the last 4 minutes with a chance to pull it out.

We have to be able to rest the starters throughout the game so Zee, RJ, and Dorius need to be good enough to stay on the floor for stretches.

The problem with Shulga at PG is he has a horrible assist/turnover ratio and leads the team in turnovers, by far. However, with Jones out, someone other than Ashworth has to play some PG or Ashworth never gets a shot off.

If there's one good thing about our matchup is that San Diego State sometimes has games and moments in games where they just cannot score the basketball it seems. Hopefully we have one of those games with them because if we do then I think that's our best shot at taking them down.

When will you all learn we can’t have nice things? A Q1 road win against SDSU was never happening, but this thread existing is the nail in the coffin.

Winning games on the road vs top 30 teams is hard…right prime?

I think he meant making 11 OR 12 3's, while shooting a total of 23 to 26 from that range.

This is correct, in no way do I think the Aggies would shoot 92% from 3.. Odom is like 25-2 at USU when they Aggies make 10 or more 3's.

Do we pack it in with a zone and make them beat us from outside to start with?

I think for atleast parts of the game. A 1/3/1 where you cut of penetration at the top of the key and also challenge midrange jumpers would be my choice. Making sure to coach up that if they get a 3 it is on the second perimeter pass in the corner. Force them to make corner 3’s.

Come out with 4-1 zone then switch to a 1-4. Move from that to only playing 2 on defense with the other three remaining on the offensive end. Swap that for a 2-2-4 (we'll see how sharp the officials are). Maybe play with the jersey's on backwards while wearing one shoe.

Throw them off their game a little. They'll never see it coming.
