Technical Foul for a dunk?

Post by EngineeringAggie » January 11th, 2023, 8:59 am

Did anybody catch why Bairstow got called for a technical foul last night after one of his dunks? Was it just because it looked like a man dunking on two middle schoolers, or did Bairstow do/say something after the dunk? They would only show the dunk on tv and not anything afterward.

Have to say that the dunk may have deserved a technical too because of the way he disrespected the two Wyoming players that he posterized.

He patted his head afterwards, he didn’t do it in the direction of the Wyoming players but they still gave him a Technical. Oh well, definitely worth it.

Is there a problem with patting your head? Is that supposed to mean something?

I think it’s a young kids way of saying “in your face”.

Exactly. Means "On your head" , like, "I dunked on your head, bruh, like you're a little child, maybe I'm too much for you and your weak (I can't express myself without swearing) game" That's why he got the T, all the extra stuff it implies. :noidea:

Bairstow said post game he probably deserved it. 😁

Something like this happened with Brady Jardine one year.

My kids told me it is supposed to indicate patting a little kid on their head in a patronizing way, though they said you are usually supposed to point at the person who is the recipient of your ridicule.

Not related to this, but I am surprised at how much they allow ball handlers to use their off arm to push and hook defenders. On one play, Maldonado pushed Bairstow into the screen. They took away the armbar from defenders. They should also take away the off arm pushing and hooking.

Isn't there a specific rule about pulling yourself up on the rim? I may be misremembering the rule, but if so I could see why he got the T.

Pretty silly call in my opinion. If the game were tight I don't they think they would have called it but were probably trying to make sure nothing got out of hand with the blowout.

That is a great point. It isn't a close game, and it sucks when someone showboats on you with a big lead. Bairstow shouldn't have done that. The refs just tried to keep emotions under control. I can respect that.

If Bairstow deserved a technical for that action (which is clearly not widely recognized) I am curious why I have never seen a technical for someone holding their hand out to indicate "you are too small to cover me" - an action that is regularly announced by the commentators (often with a hint of a snicker).

That dunk was sick. If I was the ref I’d have teed him up too just to make the Wyo players feel better. Kind of like the shadow foul to end the half.

I will say the refs let both sides play rough for the most part but damn did they have some absolutely awful calls when they did blow the whistle

Or when Wyo guy runs into a literally standing there arms out Dorius but gets leveled looking like he hit a brick wall and some how dorius gets the foul on that. So do you just move out of the way next time? Let him by?

I just noticed a Wyo. dunk where the player did a crazy headshake, most likely with a tongue out at the student section.

That head pat was WAY WORSE ;)

I recognize the insult gesture but I thought he was saying he got hit in the head between the two defenders.

Even if he did that gesture as a taunt, I see that allowed in hundreds of other bball games. Why are we being called for it?

This was the first time I've ever seen it called. I've never seen the "too small" gesture called.

That's what I thought too. He got hit on the head, and he was indicating as much to say it should have been an "and 1". The referee obviously didn't like being told he missed the call.
