Great to have Funk back

Post by hipsterdoofus21 » January 11th, 2023, 8:43 am

I believe we would be sitting with at worst 1 loss right now (Boise) if he'd never suffered the ankle injury. He's such an important player to what we do on the court. Our offense is based on spacing and passing, and being the ultimate stretch 4 he is the most important piece to space the floor.

Agreed. He finally became a significant rb contributor again with five.

It was nice to see his shots falling. I love when he plays with confidence.

He played great last night, it is nice to see shot start falling again. Now we just need Ashworth to find his shot again, the last 2 games his 3 ball has not fallen.

I liked seeing Funk get into the key a few times. I also liked is defensive effort on Maldonado.

Those two things could make him more effective. Hope they continue.

Yeah, his confidence appears to be fully back.

It was odd seeing Akin playing D on Maldonado and while he has 20 I thought it worked well.

I talked pregame about Akin on Maldonado and I thought he did really great when those two matched up. I was happy to see Funk shooting well last night but he struggled to keep up with Maldonado’s speed and strength. He did ok though, just seemed to be caught flat footed to many times.Akin really flustered him though and he looked to pass more often than not. Akin is the power inside we missed last year. If Wyo had Ike, I’m not sure what we would do matchup wise.

100% Agree. I Ike may be nba worthy but at this point you’re 5-12. Do you even play Ike this year or take him for a whole season next year?

I don't think Funk was missing shots because of his ankle. Sometimes you are just in a slump. The Aggship did a story on Funk and it appears every seasons of his basketball career he has gone into a slump, sometimes two slumps in a season.

Have him transfer to USU next year and we'll showcase him for NBA scouts.

If Ashworth has to continue to be the primary ball handler, he will continue to struggle with his shot and his defense. Being forced to become the facilitator leads to him passing the ball and rarely getting it back.

I think Shulga is a good PG, just have him run it more.

Nearly 1:1 assist/turnover ratio makes me nervous but if it means taking Ashworth off the ball, we may need to accept what comes with Shulga being a more primary ball handler.

Someone with analytics would need to look more into this, but I feel like a lot of Max's turnovers are eagle eye passes that teammates are not ready for. Often I am thinking "wow what great vision" until the ball bounces past the receiver. I think the other half are just lazy passes that defenders see coming a mile away.

Way too many turnovers to be the primary ball handler.

I've really liked him playing this year. the one thing i don't like is that he pulls it out and tries to break down the defender one-on-one and gets kinda caught in between shooting and passes, therefore turnovers. Ashworth really moves the ball down the court, shulga brings it up slower.

It's hard to turn someone into a PG at this level after they've been playing ball since they were eight or nine years old. So much of it is a mindset.
