A thought about scheduling
We have a somewhat fluffy preconference schedule. I think the Diamondhead Classic was expected to be stronger when we agreed to play in it, but still. We have a lot of home games against teams in the 100+ NET. We complain about not being able to get big schools here. So here's my question:
Why don't we take more road games against bigger schools? Collect a little money and get a NET boost if we win, and little penalty if we lose as it would likely be a Q1 loss.
Additionally, I understand why we won't play Utah and BYU in anything other than a H/H agreement, but wouldn't it be theoretically better for us to play a road game that we could have a strong fan presence at? It still counts as an away game on NET, but with fan support. Honestly, we might have more fans at the Huntsman center than the U... Again, I get it, we should be doing a H/H like we have for the past century, but looking at it from an emotionless point of view, it makes sense to take a payout to play a NET away game in SLC.

Would be cool if we could do an agreement as such where we play Utah/BYU every year and the team that wins gets the home game the next year.

Re: A thought about scheduling
Our schedule does suck, which is unfortunate because I do think this team is quite a bit better than last year (and yes I know we did look awful yesterday).
I'm all for taking on the road game at a big school (BYU and Utah do not fall in that territory lol). Iowa last year was technically a neutral site, but I loved that we scheduled it. Nothing to lose and everything to gain with opportunities like that. It was fun to look forward to as a fan even though we ended up taking a beating.
As for the in-state games, I can't understand why we can't all do H/H's considering all three of the schools have respectable basketball history, and with the rivalry history we have along with it. However, put me in the group that would have preferred Odom to accept the neutral game at Vivint arena against BYU for this year as maybe our last game in the rivalry for the foreseeable future. I know there's some pride hurt about them not agreeing to commit to Logan this past offseason, but for this schedule, considering how bad it is, why not take it? I'd rather go to Salt Lake to see a USU vs BYU game than have LMU on the schedule in Vegas.

Scheduling is always a balance. If you don't have enough home games then season ticket holders are disappointed. I wouldn't mind 1 or 2 more road games against bigger teams but when we're doing a lot of home and home deals with our peers it could lead to a shortage of home games in a future season.

Re: A thought about scheduling
If we think back a month of two before the season started I don't think anyone saw us playing this good. We were mediocre last year and just lost our two highest scorers and the heart of the team. Coming in we had guys who played well at lower levels of competition but not as good as they are playing now (Funk/Akin). Shulga has made a jump, Ashworth has made a jump, Hamoda has made a jump, Jones seems more steady, Zapala tried to jump but tripped over himself. No one knew the chemistry would be this good. Going into the season I think we were all relieved to play lighter competition to gives us a few W's, gain some confidence and time to figure each other out. If we knew what we have now I'm sure we would have tried to get a bigger game or two in the OOC to test us and see where we are at. But saying that a few months ago would have been penciling in a demoralizing loss.

Re: A thought about scheduling
Strength of schedule is either an eye test measurement (Our schedule stinks) or an empirical measurement (KenPom, Sagarin, etc.)
The most common references to our schedule fit the first bill - and why? Because they don't see "name" teams. The age-old "Hats in the mall" issue. It is an eye test.
If you want to talk empirical data, the following current results are in place. Since we are in the MWC, I have cherry-picked MWC that have a chance to make noise in conference. No SJSU, no AFA, no FSU. The first number is the Sagarin Sos. The second is the KenPom SoS.
SDSU 11 13
USU 242 209
BSU 156 240
CSU 296 296 (rare match)
UNM 276 289
UN 137 128
UNLV 282 278
UW 288 258
Based on numbers, USU has one of the better schedules of the teams in the MWC.(4th and 3rd respectively.)
There are currently 15 undefeated teams in DI. 9 of them have a KenPom SoS worse than USU.
His top 10 has 3 ASun teams in it. Why? Because they don't have the luxury of playing home games.
Can we do better? Sure. But a casual look suggests that we are competitive with our peers in scheduling.

Re: A thought about scheduling
I think you take a much bigger in the event with Loyola Marymount and other teams in Vegas. Not a lot of room for a money games on the schedule. I want to watch the team play in Logan. I think a home and home vs Weber State and similar teams is better than playing a Vivint game against BYU and Utah. I know we owe some return games to some of the teams that played in Logan. (Weber, UVU, Oral Roberts, Bradley, and Santa Clara) I know some of those were likely buy games, but I understand some were home and home. I like the schedule this year. There are some teams that could win 20+ games, and a lot of games with local interest. If I understand, San Diego and San Francisco games home and home. So our away games are part of a larger event, or a way to get a team to play a game in Logan. Playing a buy game down south for less money or without a return game gives up opportunities for other scheduling priorities.

Re: A thought about scheduling
Most games that would be Q1 games don’t want a middle-to high end MWC team Like us as a home game. Because for them it’s Q2 at best. SDSU is an exception because they’re usually top 30 so it’s a Q1 game anyway. These “big” teams get no real value scheduling us so it’s hard to find someone that will let us come. They get enough Q1/2 games in conference, they want more cupcakes.
It’s hard to know what Mid-Majors (outside of Gonzaga and St. Mary’s) will be Q1 games. So really it’s a crap shoot. The teams we played this year have been Q1 teams in the past. Maybe when we play them next time they will be. It’s a crap shoot with Mid-Majors.
it’s really only the preseason tournaments that we’re going to play a P6 team. It’ll be rare if we ever get one

Would you trade our perfect record for a couple Q1 loses?
I think Odom was favoring winnable games due to last year's team not being able to clutch out a single win over a peer

I mean, yeah, probably. We were close to .500 last year and made the NIT because we scheduled so well.trevordude wrote: ↑December 2nd, 2022, 6:43 pmWould you trade our perfect record for a couple Q1 loses?

Being undefeated against meh competition doesn’t get us anywhere. Q1 games at least give us the possibility of something good.
