Where USU is Top 10 in the Nation (As of 11/23)

Post by rAggie » November 23rd, 2022, 8:42 am

A couple of areas where USU currently ranks in the Top 10:

No. 1 in 3-point shooting percentage (47.8 percent)
No. 5 in Assists/FGM (69.3 percent of FGs are assisted)
No. 8 in Effective FG percentage (59.5 percent)
No. 9 in percent of total points coming from 3 pointers (43.5 percent)

Individually, none of our players rank in the Top 10 in any categories, but Ashworth is close in a number of areas, including being No. 14 in true shot percentage, No. 17 in offensive rating, No. 22 in effective FG percentage (77.1%!!!) and No. 36 in 3PFG%.

It is amazing to see the 3 point stats. Last year the team was not a very good overall shooting the 3 point shot. I am a little nervous if they can keep up at this pace. On a lot of their 3 pointers they are set up by good passing. Be interesting to see how it plays out when we play some teams that defend better. So far it has been fun to watch.

Funny what happens to the 3 point percentage when your leading 3PA guy from last year is also your worst shooter. Addition by subtraction at its finest.

I know you're talking about rate stats here, but it's worth noting that Ashworth is 4th nationally in 3 pointers made and Funk is 9th (20 and 19 respectively).

Effective FG% is pretty simple. The formula is (FG + 0.5 * 3P) / FGA. Essentially, EFG% adjusts for the fact that 3 > 2

True shooting % is more complicated as it takes FTs into account too: PTS / [2 * (FGA + 0.44 * FTA)]

Good summary. Another way to think about it is if you have an EFG% of 60%, every time you shoot the ball - regardless of from where - you’re averaging 0.6 points scored.

OMG, I'm embarrassed that I even asked -
I had in my mind that it was written as Effective FT - not FG. I couldn't come up with Free Throw effectiveness -
Thanks for clarification!

I believe it would be 1.2 points, i.e., 0.6 x 2 points/field goal, wouldn’t it?

FGM = field goals made
FGA = field goals attempted

Another way to express the EFG% formula is:
EFG% = 100*((count of 2pt FGM) + 1.5*(count of 3pt FGM)) / (Total FGA)

I agree that an EFG% of 60% would indicate an average of 1.2 points scored per field goal attempted.

If a player can hit over 67% of 3 point attempts, the player could potentially exceed 100% EFG.

This kind of speculation is entertaining - I mean when was the last time that a player (or two) shot over 67% in a game? ;)

I don't expect USU to shoot 48% from three all year...that would probably be some kind of record, especially with the volume they're shooting.

That said, the threat of them hitting threes at a high clip will stay which should should continue opening up driving lanes.

Agreed, if they can hit in the 40% the Aggies will be a tough out. One thing about their 3 attempts is most of them are coming off of good passes. It is not like they sit back and jack up 1 on 1 three point shots.

The only negative is one bad night or two (and it will happen somewhere along the line) will screw up those great numbers,
