"secret" scrimmages

Post by Aggie702 » October 4th, 2022, 11:40 am

Looks like we will scrimmage Washington Oct 15 and Cal Oct 22. Both scrimmages appear to be away. I'm guessing they subsidize our travel and expenses.

Be interesting to see how the team stacks up against those teams. Based on the other threads i would guess Funk doesn't play in those. Maybe Rylan will be able to play in the one on the 22nd. Be a really good test for the players to see where they stand against those teams.

Your fellows already had a secret scrimmage..Myself and a few of my fellow golden agers came to Logan for the ice cream and the scrimmage. We boat raced those youngsters..I was getting to the cup with impunity and our age and guile was too much to contend with. Also I still got my nap in early and we all celebrated by watching Murder She Wrote but still got to bed by 8:15. A nice Thursday all around.

But cheer up..Your team looked solid...And the ice cream was great..

Of course it was. Now, if you'd said the ice cream was mediocre, we'd know you were making stuff up.

Any word on if this game has already been played today and if so, how did it go? Or is it being played later today still?

I know they are supposed to be closed door but word always gets out. Hoping for some good news on how the team is coming together.

Go Aggies!

I’m not sure if this was sarcasm/some continuation of an inside joke or if this is real and we really did beat them.

How good is Washington supposed to be this year?

Reading up on Washington, they are picked to be 10th in the league bc they lost their top 2 scorers. The top scorers were guards and they have 2 pretty good guards that will be taking their places. They also picked up 2 10ppg transfers from Washington St and Kentucky. To help fill their needs at forward and center they picked up the good center from Oregon Kepnang that we played against as well as Braxton Meah from Fresno. Seems like they are picked low bc they are unproven but I think they have a pretty strong roster there.

If we really beat them pretty good then there is some hope for this team. I was worried Most about our frontcourt but if we played well against Kepnang and Meah we are going to be ok.

We beat Washington last Saturday. Decisively. Without Taylor Funk.

We're super secret preseason scrimmage warriors!

Wish that would someday translate into the real season.

Who enforces the secrecy? If someone has data about the scrimmage and shares it, is there a risk of any punishment for the individual or the team? Asking for a friend.

I somewhat follow UW hoops, as it's my second school, and they have not been very good for awhile. Last season was passable which probably saved the coach's job for one more year, but it's probably only finances that have prevented a firing thus far.
Long story short, not sure I would read much into a victory over the Huskies. They are not the team that we met in the NCAAs, or the team that cranked out NBA studs year after year. (Lorenzo Romar could recruit like nobody's business. Too bad he was crap on the tactical side of things.)

Leakers tend to wake up with their throats cut or tied to train tracks.

The Pack practice game is against Santa Clara on the 26th..

Since it has been established that only the person who leaks scrimmage information is going to get tied to the railroad track, here are some limited thoughts received from a pseudo-insider friend:

USU was up by 20+ with four minutes left when they emptied the bench.
Point totals pretty much matched my expectations except for the leading scorer. Shulga, Akin, Ashworth, Bairstow as expected.
I don't know that Jones played.
Apparently the "secret" nature has been scaled back. At first no one could be in attendance. Now there are (at some - probably not this one) occasionally NBA scouts in attendance.

As nvspuds has stated, it' s practice. But I'd rather win such a thing than lose it.

The comparison to last year's SMU game is somewhat valid although the 9-4 record going to Colorado Springs felt pretty good - even felt that way later considering the schedule included three teams that won a game in the NCAAT (though Iowa lost to Richmond so that was a guarantee).

But the 3-point shooting pretty much left the team. 44% in a win against Richmond. 48% in the win against NMSU. (I must acknowledge that the 27% against OU was not the the cause of a loss.) But 5 losses where the percentage was at or below 25% changed the trajectory of the team.
1 for 19 in a two point loss at AFA. 1-15 in a two point loss to CSU. Both dismal.

3 point shooting, interior defense and execution in the final 2 minutes will define the season in my opinion.

Honestly, the lineup should be Akin, Funk, Ashworth, Shulga, and Bairstow.

Something to think about this lineup
2021 3 point %
Shulga 45.0
Ashworth 39.2
Funk 37.3
It would spread the opposing defense out which would allow more room for Bairstow and Akin to score while having size.

Is Eytle-Rock going to see a decrease in minutes or dropped from the starting spot altogether? He was fine last year. But we do have a lot of dudes in that 2/3 spot. Wonder how the rotation will look and how'll they'll distribute the minutes.

I’d be curious to hear if we had a good 3 point %. Like others I think this will be key to our seasons success, so hoping it’s improved from last year.
Thanks for the info on the scrimmage!

I appreciate the info. Going into the game I could easily see the opposite happening. I didn’t really know what to expect from this team yet. On paper we have some good pieces but obviously chemistry and matchups had some issues last year. So bringing a new team together, you never know exactly how it will play out. This has really given me some hope for this team.
