NAR with a few AR flashbacks: Coach K to not attend games next year

Post by GameFAQSAggie » June 27th, 2022, 2:58 pm

Coach K has announced that he will not be attending Duke games at Cameron Indoor Stadium next year, and the rationale is that he doesn't want to be a distraction. That does bring back flashbacks of the first year after Stew retired, Stew would come to games and sit right behind the bench, and some people had concerns that it was a distraction. And it looks like Coach K's view aligns with those that thought Stew shouldn't have been attending the games that year, at least not right behind the bench. Duryea did have shortcomings as a coach that he still would have had with or without Stew coming to the games, but it's possible Stew being in his shadow behind the bench didn't help matters.

For one thing, Cameron Indoor Stadium is a small gym that there wouldn't be anywhere for Coach K to be hidden away, whereas other arenas are built like NBA arenas while the recently retired legend can be hidden away in a luxury suite.

Roy Williams attended games last year and it didn't seem to distract UNC

I think a competent head coach prevents such things from being a distraction. Stew was probably a massive distraction when he attended.

I don't think either really should be a distraction. Coach k is 75(or close to it). He cant coach forever. Even if their new coach bombs it means he was the wrong hire not that coach k should have coached until he was 90. As for stew, his last few years they program has fallen off. Dont know if people were screaming for stew to come back during the duryea years.

Perhaps he's announced that he won't attend in an attempt to get them to beg him to attend.

I'm sure they will have multiple events honoring him, but he probably wants to take a break from it. He can take his family to the Maldives for a few months and have a good time away from the stress.
