Hmm? This was interesting.
Does Daniel Akin (RJ’s former UMBC teammate and fellow London baller) have any eligibility left? He seems to fit many of the clues.
Bingo!! Did anyone pick up my word scramble clue?
AND AsKINg.
No I didn’t! Lol but very clever now that you point it out!

:golfclap: well done clue.
Now let's commence the kvetching!

I'll start. Would have rather had Wahab....and I wasn't all that excited about him.

Also, worrisome of further evidence that the staff just swims in the same pools it is familiar with.

I think Akin will provide a level of athleticism we were lacking last season. He can play above the rim and block shots. That being said, it is a bit of a head scratcher to use up all 3 of our openings on big guys.

We still dont have any African-Americans on the team. I THOUGHT YOU SAID HE WOULD BRING DIVERSITY!

:stirpot:

Edit: before I get myself in trouble here, clearly I am joking. Looks like a pretty solid pickup.

Did Akin get a medical redshirt or something? He's played in 5 seasons already.

A couple years old but it gives a taste of Akin’s game.

Medical redshirt is what I'm assuming as he played in 6 games one of his years. Knows our system, is athletic. I too was hoping for a scoring athletic guard but after thinking about this addition, it makes sense. Opens another scholarship next year as well.

I'm excited to have him and think he’ll play a key role. I must admit I am a bit miffed though that we are going into next season with 4 Centers on scholarship, especially in an era where the position has never been more obsolete.

I assume Akin may get quite a few of Funk’s backup minutes at the 4, especially if Johnson is at the 5, but also see Akin sliding to the 5 when playing alongside Funk. We will need Akin’s aggressiveness and athleticism around the basket on both ends as we didn’t really have that guy on the roster.

I like the pickup. He is certainly not an outside shooter, but can give some good minutes down low. The thing I like the most is his rebounding numbers at around 8 a game. He is also really strong. He could be a difference maker when playing guys like Ike in that he can be physical enough to not let them bully his way to the basket. He brings some toughness to the team that is for sure needed.

At 6’9” and 225# Akin was the 3rd leading scorer and leading rebounder on the 9th place WAC team, California Baptist. He hit 69% on his FTs and 54% from the field. He was the team’s leading shot blocker by far.

Thank you for the summary

Honestly I feel like he will be a better matchup for a big like Ike at Wyoming than anything else we have on our roster, which really hurt us this past year.

So I’m encouraged by that.

If he is the add, I like Akin. He fits the role of a guy that isn’t going to be thrown back five feet when backed down by Ike. I honestly don’t have issues with the quality of any of the guys added. But like others have said, I think we’ll be treading water at best.

And yes, the coaching staff has far more confidence in our guards improving than I do. I think Jones, Ashworth, and Eytle-Rock are basically fully baked at this point. There may be some incremental improvement, but we know what we have there. All nice players (and likeable guys), but not one of them is particularly clutch or dynamic.

I don’t know if he was injured at the end of last season but he average about 20 minutes per game in the WAC tourney (2 games) and California Baptist’s CBI game but only averaged 2 ppg. YIKES! He started the season well but ended poorly.

I think the majority agree with you. Nice recruiting class. But likely didn’t do anything to address a struggling back part.

Still to be seen but I think Faslev is that clutch, shot creating guard. And Miller retired - progress?
Perhaps Falslev will become that guy, but in my opinion, it won’t happen his freshman year.

The incremental improvements I hope to see from those three are:

Jones - drive and shoot more instead of always picking up the dribble and looking to pass
Ashworth - keep improving across the board
Eytle-Rock - coming into form earlier in the season

Jones shooting more will help keep the defense honest and could also open up more cutting opportunities for other players. The entire team did better overall when Jones shot more. If he can average 8-10 ppg while at least maintaining the assists I think the season could be fairly successful.

Watching last season it kind of felt like Ashworth regressed some, similar to a sophomore slump. But looking at his stats, he definitely took a step forward and he needs to continue that progress this next season. Would love to see him bump up his scoring to 10-12 ppg while still being that pesky guy on defense that pisses off the other team and their fans.

Eytle-Rock seemed to come on better later in the season. Hopefully he comes around into form closer to the start of conference play.

I think Ashworth is the guy on teh guard line that has room to grow and will do so. I am hoping that he and Mason provide a good backcourt boost for next season.

If we got 10-12 ppg from BOTH Jones AND Ashworth, I guarantee we will be more than alright next year.

I hope we're not settling for alright. But maybe that's the best we can hope for with this squad.

Perhaps the English language is changing as I get older, but I have always been under the impression that “more” is not synonymous to “equal to.” Since Aggies22 is hoping to be MORE than alright, I think it is safe to say that no one is hoping for or settling for just alright.

Some would say that the MWC was really great last year and that contributed to our poor conference showing. But I think the post-season showed that the MWC was over-rated.

We weren't very good.

So that means 7 to 9 ppg more from them. Now we only need to see if we can make up the 31 ppg and 16.5 rpg that Bean and Horvath gave us and we should be just fine.
