Jake Sampson - Umpqua CC

Post by Highway89 » February 27th, 2022, 1:59 pm

Does anyone know why USU isn't recruiting Jake Sampson? He played at Davis High, both his parents are Aggie Alum, and he is as good of 3-point shooter as I've seen. As a freshman, he leads the entire NJCAA in three point percentage (57%) and is sixth in makes (would likely be one here too if not for missing a few games due to COVID and a sprained ankle). He also shoots 87% from the free throw line.

I know he is getting a lot of attention from some great schools but so far hasn't heard a word from USU. Maybe Aggies22 or someone in the know can comment. Thanks.

Who are the schools after him?

One thing that should translate to the next level is shooting. Wyoming has a guy on their team (sorry his name escapes me at the moment) who came in from jc and his 3 pt shot has def translated.

I brought Jake up when he was a junior in high school. Unbelievable shooter. Doesn’t create but man can he shoot. I talked to his dad at that time and he said they hadn’t heard a word from USU.

Small correction. He leads the NWAC, which is comprised of Washington and Oregon JCs only, along with one from Idaho. The NJCAA is comprised of JCs from the rest of the states except California.

He not extremely athletic, but he is an unbelievable shooter. He might be a liability on defense. He is someone that defenses can never lose track of because he is lights out as shooter.

His name is Jefferies. He is also a very good defender and is very athletic - jumps very well. He brings more than just good three point shooting to WYO.

Different build, taller and less thick. Would guess Brian is a quicker and better defender, but not as pure of a shooter. I’ve watched thousands of high school games and he really is the most pure high school shooter I’ve ever witnessed live. He would definitely need to be surrounded by the right teammates and this Aggie bunch might not be that group, but man I would have liked to see him play with Queta.

I’m speaking as his dad so there is some bias for sure. He needs to get laterally quicker which he will this summer. He’s been fighting an ankle injury for the past few weeks which makes it tough. What’s indisputable is as a Junior and Senior in HS he lead 6A both years in makes and shot 47% from 3 those 2 years as a varsity starter.
As a Freshman starter at a Umpqua CC he averages 15.5ppg and shoots 57% from 3(#1 in conference) on over 4 makes a game which is top 5 in conference. Should the Aggies take a chance on a kid like this?? IMO hell yes. You can never have enough shooting and he’s as good as there is.

He has a skill that has been desperately needed at USU for the last two seasons. Will it translate to MW level and above? The people guarding the perimeter are typically bigger, longer, stronger, and/or quicker than HS or JC players. The offense Odom runs is set up to get anyone and everyone an opportunity to shoot on nearly every possession. Pretty much every player touches the ball on every half-court set. An accurate catch-and-shoot guy could de well in this offense.

How is his defense? Perimeter defense (or lack thereof) at USU is costing them ball games.

He needs to get quicker laterally but he is coming off an ACL tear(11/2020). He is a high IQ defender and with a more work in the weight room in the off season will be fine. Shooting wise he can shoot and make shots at any level. Quick release and unlimited range.

That's a shame because perimeter shooting has been dismal for this team for two years now and it's not from lack of getting good looks. Stats don't lie: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-baske ... s/_/id/328

My major concerns. Can he get his own shot? Can he defend at an elite level?

It's always possible the staff will do their due diligence and just think he's not worth a scholarship, but you can literally never have enough 3 point shooting (and we honestly don't have enough) and 6'3 is decent size for the 2.

With shooting like that, I don't think you need to be an elite defender, you just need to be an average defender.

He can definitely get his shot off. Not sure why guarding at an "elite" level is a concern? Right now we have guards that can't shoot or guard at an "elite" level.

He could be used like a Brock Miller but with much higher efficiency from the field. Catch and shoot and coming off screens he’s as good as there is……would give your playmakers plenty of space to operate as he can shoot from 25-30 feet out. He wouldn’t be an All MW player but a very nice piece on a good team even if he’s your 7th or 8th guy off the bench.

Well then he would fit in nicely with what's returning. It could be the all 7th or 8th guy off the bench bunch.

I think the issue right now is we have more pressing needs. Mason Falslev is already coming to play the 2. AND we desperately need a center, power forward, and a small forward.

How's his pump fake game? Can he pump fake an open shot and then drive the lane and dish to a worse shooter? He might be just what we're looking for.

How about kids about college age? If Justin started at 16 he’d have about a 16 year old.

My answer to your questions:
Catch-and-shoot > dribble-and-shoot
Who on our team can defend at an elite level?

A player who can shoot ~50% from 3, create, and defend at an elite level is a star.
Not everyone can be a star, but we could use a knock-down outside shooter. Let's say that worst case he's a taller version of Brian Green. Not a star, can't create his own shot, not a great defender, but gets buckets worth 3 points at a 50% clip! That would be a great addition to the team IMO

Good input dad. This forum can be brutal sometimes to each other and even parents sometimes, but I sure hope your son gets a chance to play div 1 ball and would be great to be an Aggie.

Jake can definitely get his shot off. He doesn’t just toe the line either. He can hit shots 2-3 feet off the 3 point line. Last week he hit a logo 3 in rhythm.

He usually has someone chasing him on D all game too trying to not let him get open shots. He creates spacing. This Aggie team this year desperately misses shooters and clutch shooters. If you can get someone shooting almost 60% on over 100 attempts you take a swing.

Shulga shot mid 50s from 3 before coming here. Guessing competition may have been similar. Not saying Sampson couldn’t be good, just noting it is def tougher to have good shooting numbers against bigger and stronger players.

We do need a Brock Miller replacement. I think this kid could hit 28% of his threes.

Yea but can he chuck up 15 shots a game, make ill-advised turnovers, and have the guy he's guarding blow by him on a regular basis? If so, he'd be perfect in that role!

This is a good point. Defenders a step quicker, a little taller, a little longer.

However, in what appears to be a motion offense run by Odom, we've seen our share of wide-open threes and don't make nearly a high-enough percentage.

Reality won’t matter if the coaching staff believes Jake would have a hard time being very successful in the MW. With that shooting percentage at the JC level and an interest in USU, it seems reasonable to give him a serious look. Although as mentioned above, going against players that are a little taller, faster, and stronger can make a huge difference on performance at both ends of the floor.
