The T

Post by Elkaggie » January 15th, 2022, 10:08 pm

I know some say it was warranted and he was sticking up for his guys but you can criticize w/o getting one. It was literally the difference in the score.

Between that and not trying to do something different on Maldonado was a tough one to swallow

It was overdue in my opinion. I've felt like Odom has been pushed around by MWC refs, especially in the CSU game where they refused to foul out Roddy while sending Bean to the bench on a foul he didn't even commit.

He tried different things on Maldanado but it looked like really poor execution; either doubling him far too early in the shot clock, giving him the baseline or looking away and giving up a back door.

I was actually glad he got the T. Sometimes he seems a little too passive for me.

Shulga and Dorius coming into the game was a big momentum swing.

Would be nice to have a 2/3 zone in addition to the 1/3/1. Jeffries was the only one hurting us from 3. Would’ve loved to see us pack it in and make them do something else other than post Ike and Maldonado up down the stretch. Sending a double that far out and leaving one defender with Ike and the shooter in the corner was not what I would’ve done.

No offense but what game were you watching. We were up 2 when he got the T and they went on 7-0 run to go up by 5. In was bone headed and the difference in the game imo.

He deserved the technical, but he was upset with all the shoulder checking that Ike was doing to initiate contact that they were not calling on him. It sucked because it was big momentum swing. The Aggies were up by 2 and that gave them 4 straight free throws. I have no problem with Odom showing passion, he has been criticized for not being passionate enough, but it was just at a bad time to get a technical.

I think that is what he is saying, a huge momentum swing in favor of the visitors.

The T was needed. Those calls...... It's just not OK. On TV, they didn't touch the guy at all.

We just need to hit a few more of our free shots.... We have a great record if we hit those. I know everyone mentions 3 point shooting. But FREE THROWS being wasted is very bad.

Yes exactly. The Ags had just battled back from a 6 point hole just 3 and half minutes prior. They had mojo and the Spectrum was on fire. After the Tech they found themselves right back into a 5 point hole.

Huh? I better check the replay, and the definition of “big momentum swing.” Seems like a big momentum swing would produce more than a 2 or 3 point difference. I could be wrong, but it was a close game all night, and the only thing you could call a momentum swing of any magnitude is the T foul. Had we had any form of a momentum swing, we would have won.

I will have to watch the replay to be sure, but I think after the T, Ike got 2 offensive fouls shortly after. They got points from the tech, but getting Ike his 3rd and 4th fouls were really big. I don't know if those would have been called if Odom hadn't gotten on the refs.

This is true. They finally called it the way it should have been. It sucks he got a technical but the refs were blowing it.

The bigger coaching blunder wasn’t the technical foul, it was the poor offensive play call that had Bean forcing a left-hand, underhand layup around his defender when it was a tied game under a minute left. Followed by the odd call for a double team on Molanado close to the three point line early in the shot clock that left the back door completely open for an easy layup. That put us down by 2 with 38 seconds left. :disappointed:

We were losing by a ton early then the subs then we had the lead.

I think Odom sensed not just the game, but the entire season slipping away at that moment. The frustration of falling short on the season and not having anything to play for may have got the best of him and it boiled over. That, and the fact that his teams seemed to have drawn the short straw on many calls in recent games.

BTW, can we clear something up here that keeps coming up?

These officials ARE NOT Mountain West officials. They are NCAA officials out of the Western Officiating Consortium, whose members in basketball are the PAC12, MWC, WCC, WAC, Big Sky and Big West. They are assigned games in all the conferences-- can work the PAC 12 one night, the Mountain West the next and the WCC the night after that. They ARE NOT assigned by the Mountain West Conference, per se, though the conference may assist in coordinating them. The referees, themselves, are not bound to reffing games only in the consortium, but can ref all over the country, ala Verne Harris, Dave Ford and many others.

So can people quit complaining about "Mountain West officials?" If you want to complain, you can complain about the "officials assigned to our game by the Western Officiating Consortium." This is also true for football, which belongs to a similar confortium. The conferences don't schedule refs anymore.
