General Odom
Is there no way we get a General Odom Twitter account? I know Captain Benedict Smith account was retired and I don’t think whomever was doing it had intentions of doing more. I just wondered if anyone thought this could get picked up? It could even be a team of folks…

Re: General Odom
Maybe with basketball it’s a little too intense or time consuming due to so many games. Maybe it’s be better to do general Anderson for football- or even a “Mr Anderson” Twitter account

I guess this is the hill I die on.
I'm old enough to remember a lot of bad seasons in the late 90s and early aughts, but not old enough to remember our earlier streaks. GA 1.0 was a revelation and my expectations for Aggie football have been higher since. That engenders a lot of goodwill from me.
I'm not just waiting for basketball to start.

Re: General Odom
That's fine. He did deliver our first out right conference season in a long time. You are wrong about us still living on what he built. That run ended a few years after he left, but it 100% ended by Gary himself in the 2020 season.GaryTakeTheWheel wrote: ↑October 16th, 2021, 12:05 amI guess this is the hill I die on.

You say mediocrity, but you are just completely ignoring the state of his program when he took over.
Mediocrity was a huge improvement over what Brent Guy did.

Re: General Odom
GA deserves credit for getting USU out of the scrap heap, and it was super impressive at the time.
It’s less impressive in hindsight knowing we had two future P5 coaches at both coordinator spots, a bevy of NFL talent, and Chuckie. Just is. Feels like we should’ve won more games in 2011.

Re: General Odom
What Wells did in 2013 down to the fourth string QB was more impressive than anything Gary accomplished.
On the whole, Wells did more for USU than Gary did, and it frankly isn’t close. The revisionist history and BS it takes to argue otherwise is hilarious. Gary had ONE good season here. And it was the one Matt was here for. USU’s only modern era with sustained success was under Wells.
I know Wells isn’t as likeable as GA, but we need to stop being all “Arkansas State” about Wells.

Re: General Odom
I’d say GA had two good seasons. The five game win streak in 2011 was awesome. Also Wells was here with GA in 2011 and 2012. I always liked Matt. I just liked him less from 2015 until Love took over in 2017.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑October 16th, 2021, 12:04 pmWhat Wells did in 2013 down to the fourth string QB was more impressive than anything Gary accomplished.

Re: General Odom
I object. Without GA, there is no Wells here… and further, no Wells success here, IMO. Someone had to go down to the depths of hell and bring back our program. It’s much easier to continue/accelerate the momentum than it is to create the momentum.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑October 16th, 2021, 12:04 pmWhat Wells did in 2013 down to the fourth string QB was more impressive than anything Gary accomplished.

Re: General Odom
I was opposed to hiring Andersen for Round 2 but not because he doesn’t deserve credit for what he did in Round 1. Not only was the product of the field terrible when he was hired, but we were still in conference purgatory with no guarantees whatsoever of getting into the MWC. We could EASILY have been Idaho or NMSU. He had to recruit to an unknown future. The overall improvement in culture and the late run in 2011 may just have been the difference in getting the invite in 2012. Not to mention the fact that we finished the 2012 season as the #16 team in the country - a top 25 record we had not even sniffed in 40 years. Gary deserves the bulk of the credit for that. I’ll always be grateful for his first run even if I was I didn’t think we should hire him the second time around.

Re: General Odom
NO! He doesn't!
Although he helped with changing the attitude of the program, bringing in confidence and positivity (something we still lack as a whole fan base), he DOESN'T deserve the credit for the MWC invite.
Who deserves the credit? The Colonel Spetman (And all who supported the program, especially guys like @AGGIEFIGHT ) for making sure we got the NEZ complex done and a plan for stadium improvements (press box) in the the works.
Btw, @AGGIEFIGHT you're an inspiration to us all still to this day.

Let's not forget that USU was 11-2 under Gary Andersen in 2012, won the WAC Championship and buried Toledo 41-15 in the Potato Bowl. Its just unfortunate that Andersen 2.0 wasn't as successful.aggies22 wrote: ↑October 16th, 2021, 12:06 am4 and 8, 4 and 8, 6 and 7.Jjoey52 wrote: ↑October 15th, 2021, 7:11 pmHe had one fantastic year, surrounded by mediocrity, he also had a great staff in 2012 and a very good QB.GaryTakeTheWheel wrote: ↑October 6th, 2021, 9:25 pmI'll wear it. In much the same way as Andersen rescued USU football, Craig Smith resuscitated Aggie basketball after the down years of Tim Duryea. Now we look to Ryan Odom to keep things rolling!

It usually takes a coach 4-5 years to turn something like that around, if they even can do it. He did have a good staff, no arguing there. Dave Aranda, Matt Wells, and Mike Sanford are or were all head coaches.
But he succeeded where many others failed. And that was to get the players believing they could win games.
