Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
I'm a fan of coach Smith, but things are falling apart fast in Salt Lake.
He's lost all but 4 athletes to the portal, and his additions have been Worster, Anthony and a Juco guy that averaged 9 points a game. The schools he's losing guys to are solid P5 schools... or us, which is better than a solid P5 school....
This thing could spiral quickly and his personality isn't going to be enough to turn things around. I could easily see 2 or 3 years in Salt Lake ending prematurely for Smith.

Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
Haha, it's a bit premature to call it a train wreck. It's been a month and a half. Yes, the early signs aren't great but he still has time to bring in additional players.
But even if it does prove to be a train wreck, he has $18MM guaranteed, so he's set for life. Hard to feel bad for him given that.

Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
He turned us around in his first year. That was after losing the greatest player in USU history. There is still plenty of time to put together a team with talent. He also has a transfer portal with a lot of talent left. This may be a premature thread.

Who did we lose before Craig's first season that was the greatest player?

Probably sarcastically (I hope) the guy that's a Weber State, via Marquette, via USU.

The greatest Aggie to ever end up at Weber St. — Koby McEwen.

Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
Worst case scenario for Craig is follow his mentor Miles route. Get canned, collect a couple of years of ridiculous buyout money, while doing a cushy TV gig, and then landing on your feet again at a mid-major and still be making close of a mil a year. BTW...if stars by recruits name mean anything Miles is killing it at SJSU. Landed another P5 transfer from Old Miss. 6'11 dude that was recruited heavily out of HS.

Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
I think by end of recruiting cycle he will have enough on his roster to be middle of the road PAC 12 in combination with his coaching. I wouldn’t call that train wreck. Im curious if he is going to be able to recruit to get them to the next level. I think he kind of struck gold with Quetta not to mention Merrill handed to him on a platter. I’m not sure he can strike gold again without beating out other P5’s. Quetta was kind of an under the radar recruit IMO. Can he go get a player that all his peers also want? I’m also skeptical of his ability to recruit, but time will tell.

I'm wondering if his practice of not offering until there is an official visit is even more risky this year, since visits are still off limits until June 1. The guys he's recruited were all familiar to either him or his staff, except perhaps the JC guy.

I mean Krysto did get to the sweet 16 and have 1st round draft picks in 3 years, but sure.

Pay enough recruits illegally and you can get that sort of stuff done.LarryTheAggie wrote: ↑May 12th, 2021, 12:20 pmI mean Krysto did get to the sweet 16 and have 1st round draft picks in 3 years, but sure.

Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
Just googled the U roster which indicates:
2 from USU
1 from UNLV
1 from Cincinnati
7 retained (some are probably walk-ons)
Yes he needs more, but I think it’s too early to tell.

Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
Just for the sake of being devils advocate- maybe Smith wanted to clean house and he actually encouraged a few of those guys to come to USU. Maybe he has a few big time guys in his sights.
I don’t think this is the case, but I also don’t think Smith wants to screw USU over. I don’t wish him any Ill will anymore- admittedly I did at first. I wish him plenty of success against everyone but us.

Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
I have said it before and I will say it again. Smith is an AGGIE. He went to Utah to take their money and burn the place down. Continues to help USU by sending players our way.CaptainChaos wrote: ↑May 12th, 2021, 1:22 pmJust for the sake of being devils advocate- maybe Smith wanted to clean house and he actually encouraged a few of those guys to come to USU. Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
He could have easily prevented Jones and Martinez from leaving by retaining their Dads. Had he rehired Larry he might have been able to retain the entire team?Sl7vk wrote: ↑May 12th, 2021, 1:37 pmCenter Branden Carlson — Still in program

I'm not saying Smith is at fault here, I'm just saying this thing is looking more and more like a wreck.

Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
To be fair, a lot of people thought our situation was a train wreck a couple weeks ago. Next year may very well be a train wreck for him, but there’s still a lot of time left and a lot of players available. Fans aren’t a very patient bunch. Must be fun being a coach.

“Greatest player in USU history?” That would require a hot debate. Let’s back down to the premise of Last 20 years and that would be reasonable.

He's making a joke about how Koby McEwen said he wanted to be the greatest Aggie of all time, then transferred.

It certainly isn't looking great for Smith so far. Obviously a lot can change, but I wouldn't be terribly optimistic at this point if I were a Ute fan.

Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
First year coaches all see a lot of change and most of it isn’t stellar. I’m not saying it was a good hire by Utah, but I would not jump to train wreck in two months without knowing the final roster or playing one game.

I don't know guys, Craig just beat out Idaho, Portland State, North Texas, Louisiana Tech and Iona for the services of a guy who scored 9 points a game and played 24 minutes a game in JuCo, so you are all going to look pretty silly here soon.

I mean, if his roster had a bunch of super low major recruits at a P5 school then yeah, I would call it a train wreck. Right now, he just has some work to do.

I said it before; Smith is bringing in MWC level talent to Utah while Odom is bringing in PAC-12 level talent to USU!
Just another day in the (Aggie) Brotherhood
Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
This is stupid. It may not be immediate, but Smith is going to do very, very well at Utah. He's an unbelievable coach, and he's had success literally every single place that he's been as a coach. I hate Utah as much as the next guy, but he was a very good hire for them.

I'm not concerned with who's at fault I just hope that the University of Utah's basketball program ends up being a train wreck rather than just LOOKING like one.

This is a bad take.. Smith is a heck of a coach. He'll get the guys who fit his system and the Utes will punch well above there weight next season... Just like we did the last three seasons.
