Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
To the point of the OP, it is much too early for schadenfreude about Smith.
Remember how bad things were looking prior to his first season here? We were picked 9th and lost the guy many believed was our best player to transfer.
We won the freaking conference. He will be fine at the U, IMO.

If we would have just hired Odom to begin with, he'd be the HC at Utah right now. Or something...

Just wondering if you had insider info on each player the staff was pursuing that didn’t sign. We all know what we ended up with.

He recruited and signed one. Unfortunately he had an aversion to going to class.Pacobag wrote: ↑May 20th, 2021, 12:58 pmRecruited or successfully recruited (meaning signed)?ineptimusprime wrote: ↑May 20th, 2021, 8:54 amI genuinely believe we would have an NCAA tourney win or two if Smith had recruited a decent athletic PG when the need was first obvious.

I loved JKIII. He was an excellent player and really did a great job on the team. I'm glad he took what happened here as a wake up call and did some work down in Cedar City.Bank Shot wrote: ↑May 20th, 2021, 1:08 pmHe recruited and signed one. Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
I believe Smith will do well at Utah, but not at the speed that he was able to accomplish at USU. First, Smith had a stroke of luck when Merrill decided to stay instead of transfer out. He was a true blue Aggie so he wasn't going anywhere, but honestly if Merrill wasn't on the team then I don't think USU goes to the NCAA tournament in Smith's first two years. Now Smith's system enhanced Merrill even further, but without that chemistry Smith doesn't sniff the tournament. I don't think Smith is going to be as lucky at Utah. When he gets his system in place than I think Utah will get good. I believe it may take a few years.

Both Gach doesn't seem like the addition needed to having success in the Pac-12 next year.

Nope next year will be rough for Utah. We'll see with a year under his belt if he can bring in a good 2022 recruiting class. If he can't, he'll be moving on albeit with a lot of money.

That was the other Gach. He had a choice of Both and wanted this one instead.

Yes, that is what doesn't make sense here. Not good enough for USU but he's a go for Utah.

I won't ever count Smith out. He has a knack for getting a lot out of his players. I won't cheer for his success, but I also won't rule it out.

Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
Well he did just land the 6'10" PF from Illinois State, Dusan Mahorcic who had narrowed down his choices to Utah, Clemson and Texas. Just the fact that Texas and Beard had offered tells me this guy isn't chopped liver. I heard that byu was also after this guy. Interesting that Gach and Mahorcic were landed after the campus visits were allowed.
Still, I think the first year is going to be rough. I believe they have just one scholly left, so unless it's a home run their roster doesn't seem likely to scare the upper echelon of the PAC 12.

I think Smith didn’t want Gach at USU last year in the same sense he didn’t want the Minnesota job.Bank Shot wrote: ↑June 4th, 2021, 11:37 amThat was the other Gach. He had a choice of Both and wanted this one instead.

Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
Perhaps the best thing USU offered Smith was the opportunity for a huge payout with a P5 school and the chance to coach in a big time conference. In return he gave us 3 MW championships and NCAA invites. Something we hadn’t seen for a while and during the Duryea years I was afraid would never again. I say it was a good win-win. Let the man take his opportunity and let’s get behind our teamDkdavis wrote:I think part of the reason I want Smith to do poorly at Utah is that deep down inside I want to believe that as much as Craig did for USU, USU did equally as much for him, and that Utah can't provide that for him despite the extra money and the bigger conference. I want to believe that there is some magic in USU. The urge is natural. I wish the best to Smith, but I will continue to secretly wish he fails at Utah. Does that make me a bad person...

Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
I think he is a great coach and I think he'll overachieve at Utah with the talent he has. Problem for him is the talent he has won't be near what Mick Cronin, Dana Altman and Andy Enfield have.
Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
Likely won’t be near the talent level of the Arizona schools as well. Maybe he can reach ASU talent level.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑June 4th, 2021, 5:49 pmI think he is a great coach and I think he'll overachieve at Utah with the talent he has. Yep Arizona will be back soon as Tommy Lloyd get things rolling with Arizona distancing themselves from Sean Miller and his scandalous tenure.nswaggie wrote: ↑June 4th, 2021, 7:58 pmLikely won’t be near the talent level of the Arizona schools as well. Yeah we will see how Smith recruits for 2022 with a full year at the enemy. Krysto had a really bad first year there, but then had some really good recruiting classes and had some good seasons there. We'll see if Smith can follow suit. His current roster isn't going to be close competing in the Pac 12.

Yep. This. We’re in a good spot because of Smith. I appreciate what he did here, but I’m not going to think about him much anymore except on days we play the Utes.Chupamedia wrote: ↑June 4th, 2021, 3:51 pmPerhaps the best thing USU offered Smith was the opportunity for a huge payout with a P5 school and the chance to coach in a big time conference. I love Craig, but I don't believe that his style fits the U's commuter-school atmosphere and self-proclaimed high-brow "fan" base. He was a really good fit at USU with its true college environment.

Speaking of Smith I saw him at a basketball tournament in Preston, Idaho over the weekend. In case anyone was wondering he was wearing a long sleeved black and red shirt.

Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U
Craig was injured in a car accident many years ago and it left him badly injured. So badly injured that he required skin grafting to repair. The problem is the couldn't use skin from another part of Craig's own body due to an infection he got as a kid which he picked up whilst swimming in one of those "... thousand lakes" they got up there in Minnesota. Anyway, without that being an option, they needed a donor. As has been asserted by others on this board, Craig is extremely racist and is embarrassed to show his arms, not because of the injury, but because the donor was black. Strange, Sad. 100% true, Craig Smith has the arms of a black man.
Go Aggies!
