Can't say I'm surprised. I suspected this was going to happen as soon as they brought Bryant in. I posted an article a week or so ago that seemed to suggest Sam had a future in Milwaukee, but my thoughts on his future were confirmed. Memphis has a ton of young talent. This might be a place for Sam to grow into a solid contributor on a good young team.

Maybe they got a good look at him when he was playing with the Hustle?

I totally forgot that he played for the Hustle. Thats a great sign that they like Sam and he wasn't just a salary move.

Better place for Sam to get some run.

It also might just be the case that he is “salary filler” in this deal and that this shouldn’t necessarily be interpreted as the Grizzlies seeing a future or something special in Sam. My guess is the Grizzlies wanted the two second round picks more than Sam.

Grayson Allen, while a decent player, is redundant with Melton and Bane. They had some overstock and just cashed in.

Sam is such a mercenary. He stayed in Milwaukee just long enough to get his ring and then he was out of there.

His deal gets guaranteed on the 8th. I'm afraid they will cut him to save a million bucks.

NBA is a business. If this happens, does he get picked up somewhere else or head to Europe?

Not surprising considering his lack of playing time in Milwaukee. Hopefully he can land with a team (whether it is memphis or elsewhere) where he gets a chance to show what he can do. I wish he had been part of the trade to Houston for pj tucker. He would have gotten a lot of opportunity on the tanking rockets.

He's at least as capable as Grayson Allen. Let's see where the chips fall.

I would need to check the CBA, but I think Milwaukee had to be guarantee the deal for the trade to happen. Don’t think he could be waived at this point.

But, the worst part is that now I'm stuck with all this Bucks gear!
Will need to change over to Grizzlies stuff if I am to remain a "fanboy"....

I've never cheered for an NBA team before. Now I have all this Bucks gear, and Sam left! Queta is with the Kings, Sam's with the Grizzlies... idk how I'm supposed to proceed, lol.

Milwaukee is acquiring Allen with $4.9M DJ Augustin trade exception.

Allen is on a $4.1M expiring contract and is rookie extension eligible.

Merrill has $500K in guaranteed money, with the balance of his $1.5M contract guaranteed on 8/8.
Quote Tweet

According to Bobby Marks, it sounds like only the 500k is guaranteed

I didn't mean to make you laugh so much. To me, a 41-inch vertical leap is pretty explosive and athletic. What did Sam measure at?

I have held off on getting Bucks gear cause of the lack of certainly Sam would be in Milwaukee for long.

He is far more explosive and athletic than Sam. Sam is a better shooter but Allen is clearly the better pure athlete.

Sam would likely have options. At worst he would get offered a two-way contract with an NBA team. Europe would pay better than that.

Athletic and explosive are dumb media descriptions. Someone can be very “athletic and explosive” and not have a prayer in the nba. Someone can not be that explosive relative to the description people make and a great nba player.

On the other hand all pro athletes are athletic by definition.

So those terms are meaningless relative to measurables like agility, speed, jumping ability, etc.

In my opinion

Earning a cool 1.7 mill doesn't hurt.
