The Athletic on Ryan Adams

Here is what The Athletic had to say about Ryan Odom in their analysis of the new Mid Major coaching hires.

Utah State was ranked in the second tier of four tiers with the one tier being the best. Tom Miles at SJSU was in the first tier.

"Ryan Odom, Utah State: Odom will always be known as the guy who engineered
the first 16-over-1 upset in the NCAA Tournament by leading UMBC to its
historic win against Virginia in 2018. He's more than just a one-hit wonder,
however. The Retrievers won the America East regular-season title this
season as he was named league coach of the year. Utah State did well here.
The only thing keeping this from Tier I is the fit, as Odom has spent his
entire career on the East Coast. But we're betting he figures that part out."

I’m surprised they didn’t have more criticism for us having hired as our basketball coach a musician that recently got #metoo’d.

I saw Ryan Adams at Red Butte Gardens one time. It was too windy though so I couldn't hear anything. I bet Ryan Odom would have been better to see that night.

We just better hope our recruiting targets aren't Mandy Moore fans.

Well that’s gonna be hard, because everyone is a Mandy Moore fan.

He could still be an excellent assistant coach?

Let’s be real, the Athletic would have still criticized us even if we had hired Lionel Ritchie from South Alabama.

I'm not so sure. Lionel is easy like Sunday morning and you can't criticize anyone like that.

I am glad we got Ryan Odom instead of Tim Miles, but I do think San Jose State getting Tim Miles is as good of a get for them as Odom was for us. San Jose State is fortunate to get someone, ANYONE who has a history of success, ANY success as a D1 head coach, even if it was just regular season success and lacked postseason success and they were eventually fired and available, as they likely are never gonna get someone with any history of postseason success and are hardpressed to pluck someone away from a D1 school. While we are higher on the food chain than San Jose State, and can pluck away from some schools, and likely in more of a position to want a history of postseason success than they are.

Yeah I would agree. I'm glad we didn't get Miles, but Miles was a good hire for San Jose State. Hopefully he can make them somewhat respectable. They are one of the worst programs in the country. The three coaches since 2005 have not been able to do anything. Jean prioleau was 8-62 in the MW over the last 4 years. Before that Dave Wojcik was 12-60. In the Wac, George Nessman was 31-96. Since we joined the Wac in 2005 reuniting with San Jose State, their best conference season was 7-11 and most years it wasn't close to that.

Good luck to Tim Miles, he is going to need it.
