Coach Peterson talking USU
https://www.pscp.tv/w/1jMKgpONRdlGL
Peterson talks Neemi, Marco, Rollie, Logan, The Spectrum, USU Admin.....just nice to hear some actual real talk from one of our ex-coaches about his time in Logan and their discussions with former Aggie players....
Not gonna lie. Listening to him, he is a sharp dude and I'm sort of surprised he was not given more of a look to be the HC.

Re: Coach Peterson talking USU
I was surprised to but I think Hartwell sees this job as a job for proven head coaches and I’m sure the Maile debacle played a part in his mind as well.

Hartwell likes to make the sexy hire. He can't get that from hiring assistants.
If Hartwell would have been at SDSU in 2017, Brian Dutcher wouldn't be their head coach.

Interviews with the SDSU coach might be a little less robotic if he weren't their HC, but SDSU can't complain about the results. He's been incredible over there.brownjeans wrote: ↑April 26th, 2021, 9:18 amHartwell likes to make the sexy hire. He can't get that from hiring assistants.

Good interview. Like Coach Pete a lot. I think we could see his name surface as a USU HC candidate down the road some day as it seems he really enjoyed his time in Logan.

I said several times on this board that I thought if Smith left than EP would be a shoe-in to be the next head coach. The fact that he wasn't even interviewed is crazy to me. I wonder if the way that Smith left may have had something to do it with it and Hartwell held it against the whole staff. Eric Peterson will be a very successful head coach one day.

Re: Coach Peterson talking USU
Probably not, although the sample size with Dutcher was much bigger. 18 years as the Associate HC and a big part of the turnaround from SDSU being a dumpster fire in the 90's to one of the premier programs in the west. Peterson will likely be a good HC someday, but the sample size was much smaller. I don't begrudge Hartwell for wanting a proven HC at this stage.brownjeans wrote: ↑April 26th, 2021, 11:18 amHe's a great coach - one Hartwell would have never hired.Real Life Aggie wrote: ↑April 26th, 2021, 9:43 amInterviews with the SDSU coach might be a little less robotic if he weren't their HC, but SDSU can't complain about the results. Coach Peterson left for the Utes. As true Aggie fans, we need to let him know that we hate him, wish for him to fail, and will boo him if he ever returns to Logan in any capacity. Who’s with me?

Re: Coach Peterson talking USU
Ha, I know you are being sarcastic, but his case is different. If offered the head coaching job there was a good chance he would have stayed. Seems more like he was forced to leave Logan rather than choosing to leave for more money. Smith is the only one that should get the Spectrum Boo upon return. (I personally still think Smith is a good guy and don't hold a grudge against him, but he coaches for the enemy and I will treat him as such upon return to the spectrum.)

Yep assistants are a different deal, plus him staying at USU wasn't ever really an option. Odom was always going to bring in his guys.Dkdavis wrote: ↑April 26th, 2021, 1:05 pmHa, I know you are being sarcastic, but his case is different. Re: Coach Peterson talking USU
Do we know how it played out? Or speculation? I'm curious if Hartwell didn't even consider him, or if he reached out and EP wasn't interested. Some guys are perfectly content being the main assistant (not saying that's EP, I have no clue). Maybe a nice salary bump to keep being Craig's lead assistant was more appealing to him then being the main guy at this time.stang wrote: ↑April 26th, 2021, 9:59 amI said several times on this board that I thought if Smith left than EP would be a shoe-in to be the next head coach. Would have Anthony and Rollie both stayed if he was the head coach? That’s the real question here...

Doesn’t matter in the slightest. Can’t sacrifice a long term hire to retain players for the near future. Short sighted and can hamstring the program for yearsNotatrueaggie wrote: ↑April 29th, 2021, 9:02 amWould have Anthony and Rollie both stayed if he was the head coach? Agreed. Programs have literally been ruined by picking the popular assistant that players like over more qualified coaches.bigblue32 wrote: ↑April 29th, 2021, 9:16 amDoesn’t matter in the slightest. Re: Coach Peterson talking USU
It goes both ways. Eric may have been an awesome choice, but if you put Ryan's and Eric's resumes side by side it is a no brainer on who should have got the position. That does not mean Ryan would be more successful here than Eric, but to any argument on who should have gotten the job based on resumes we hands down made the right call.Blitz79 wrote: ↑April 29th, 2021, 4:42 pmPrograms have literally continued to be successful by picking the right assistant coach when they are the right candidate for the job.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑April 29th, 2021, 1:04 pmAgreed. Re: Coach Peterson talking USU
Sure, but that is different than what I said. Sometimes the right hire is promoting the top assistant sometimes it isn't. The point is you shouldn't let the players pick the coach. If the assistant is the most qualified person for the job, promote him. If he isn't, hire the right guy. Peterson might be a great HC. I am sure he will get his chance. Hartwell made the right decision going with a proven winner in Odom. Hard to argue with a guy with Odom's resume.Blitz79 wrote: ↑April 29th, 2021, 4:42 pmPrograms have literally continued to be successful by picking the right assistant coach when they are the right candidate for the job.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑April 29th, 2021, 1:04 pmAgreed. People were using that as an argument as why Craig Smith wouldn't leave. "He really loves Logan." And didn't you hear, his wife really loved Logan too!

Yes "loving Logan" has nothing to do with whether a coach will leave. I would venture if you polled all the people that post on this board, the vast majority love Logan, but also left Logan.brownjeans wrote: ↑April 29th, 2021, 7:58 pmI love Logan. For the right price, I'd leave and never go back.

I liked Logan, don’t get me wrong. It’s beautiful. And was a good place to live during undergrad. I really didn’t like the inversion, and really don’t like how everything is on one very congested street. I could also do without the Mormons (kidding, I was one at the time).
I considered finding a job in Logan after law school, until I figured out I could make more money in the town I grew up in with a lower CoL (Idaho Falls, ID).
Love coming down for games and to visit family though (a bunch of my wife’s siblings are in Logan), but probably would never consider moving back.

I was totally kidding though. Mormons are great. We were practicing up until we left Lawrence. It is weird, but I’d say about half of our ward in Lawrence has left the Church. Must have been something in the water there.
This is approaching sandbox level, so I will cut it out!
