Re: Roster predictions
Based on our CURRENT roster I would do the following:
PG - Ashworth (30) / Bairstow (10)
SG - Shulga (25) / McChesney (10) / Bairstow (5)
SF - Miller (30) / Shulga (5) / Potter (5)
PF - Bean (35) / Dorius (5)
C - Horvath (30) / Zapala (10)
We are extremely thin at PG (as usual). Bairstow should not sniff that position (in my opinion), but right now we don't really have a backup unless Shulga will do it. And that may not be a bad idea. I feel Shulga takes care of the ball much better than Bairstow.
We also could use another quality wing. McChesney and Potter are completely unproven, but could command minutes this year unless we sign some dudes.
Ideally I would love to sign a PG who can start or at least compete to start and a quality shooting wing. Another big would be icing on the cake, but I'm pretty confident at our depth there. I'm actually pretty high on Zapala.

That team loses a lot of games.
Here's to hearing some transfer portal successes before too long.

I just heard from a pretty good source that no decision has been made on Miller yet as far as returning. His back still has some major problems that may prevent him from playing again.

I really hope Eytle Rock follows Horvath. I still would like a P5 transfer though.

Potter could be a bit like Anderson but more 4/5 type and not so such as a 3.

Quinn Taylor, Justin Bean, Abel Porter, and Trevin Dorius are better than most HS players that get a D1 scholarship and better many P5 scholarship players. I personally believe that Brenchley will be better than expected, and I remember the hype Brenchley was getting around here wondering if he was a walk-on or a scholarship.

Re: Roster predictions
Most fans I think don't fully realize how bad Brock's back was at the end of last season. He was nowhere close to 50% health-wise, it's pretty remarkable he was even able to play as much as he was. I really hope he's able to recover, but he's in a pretty unfortunate spot.

Re: Roster predictions
And that speaks volumes for where Bairstow and McChesney were (are?) developmentally. If they couldn't even get playing time over a crippled Miller playing at 50% capacity, why are people so sure they are going to make this great leap this year and contribute?stang wrote: ↑April 16th, 2021, 2:45 pmMost fans I think don't fully realize how bad Brock's back was at the end of last season. And that starting point guard we have - he didn't score a single point in the last 4 games of the season. Where is the scoring going to come from on this team?
I mentioned in another thread and I think it is worth repeating here: The two biggest needs on this team are:
1) A primary ball handler that is a playmaker and can get to the basket and not turn the ball over, and:
2) An athletic wing that can shoot the three at a minimum 40% rate and also defend the opponent's best wing player. Hipster mentioned that this could be Shulga, but I think we need one in addition to Shulga.

Yep. When I saw the list of issues I was blown away he was going to try and make it back for the postseason. If he hangs it up no one should blame him.stang wrote: ↑April 16th, 2021, 2:45 pmMost fans I think don't fully realize how bad Brock's back was at the end of last season. We need a difference making PG in the worst way so I just stuck one in there. I'd prefer a mid/low- major all-conference type of transfer over an unproven bench P5'er for that spot.
I'm hoping McBuckets can play some SF. I know he was talked about as a stretch 4 but he's supposedly very quick for his size and I'm not sure there are many minutes available at the PF spot.
If Miller doesn't play next season we will obviously need a contributing transfer on the wing. I love what a healthy Miller brings (outside threat, leadership, grinder on defense,...). Maybe we limit Miller's minutes a bit to keep him healthy and give McBuckets and Bairstow more time.
I doubt Potter sees the floor this season. Maybe red shirt if we happen to get more transfers in.
I could see Bean and Horvath playing a lot together unless the opponent has a big 7 footer in which case Dorius and Zapala may get extended minutes and Horvath play the PF spot at times.
I think a 5 minute line-up of Transfer PG (?), Bairstow (6'8"), McChesney (6'10"), Horvath (6"10"), and Dorius (7') would cause some teams issues with their length. Outside of Dorius, not a bad group of shooters either.

So we have 3 open scholarships right now, and 4 if Brock ultimately has to move on?
I would use one on a true PG, one on a 1/2 combo guard, and one on a 2/3. Probably in that order.

Re: Roster predictions
I like Ashworth but he needs to develop something besides a 3 point shot. He got himself in trouble a lot by dribbling into the baseline then getting stuck and not knowing what to do. If he develops a floater or can shoot off a drive into the lane he could be very good.

If we can get transfer A & B that are quality we are a tournament team. I think we may be underselling Horvath a bit. He and Bean bring a lot of skill and versatility to the frontline. We definitely need to sure up the guard position and get a reliable shooter/scorer.utaggies wrote:By competitive do you mean 5th place in the conference?AGGIEinIOWA wrote: ↑April 16th, 2021, 4:16 pmI like this lineup. Re: Roster predictions
Yeah, top half of MW. Of course a lot depends on who the transfer A and B are. Say one is ERock and the other is a bench P5 sophomore transfer, I’d think we could be dangerous.utaggies wrote:By competitive do you mean 5th place in the conference?AGGIEinIOWA wrote: ↑April 16th, 2021, 4:16 pmI like this lineup. Re: Roster predictions
He will take a step next year. Now if I can get @SLB to make this prediction we will know what will actually happen.

Re: Roster predictions
I think with the spine issues Miller is experiencing, he should potentially be recruited over, once we hit the 13th scholly.Yossarian wrote: ↑April 16th, 2021, 2:54 pmAnd that speaks volumes for where Bairstow and McChesney were (are?) developmentally. He was nowhere close to 50% health-wise, it's pretty remarkable he was even able to play as much as he was. I really hope he's able to recover, but he's in a pretty unfortunate spot.
I think the staff should grab guys who have shown development to the level of a MWC level starter who are ready to go now. All of the remaining guys they sign should be combo guard scorers. 2 of which can score 35-38%+ from three consistently, not streaky shooters. If Miller can't go by July 1 they need a 4th. With the hight on the team already they need ball handling scorers, 20+ points per game, if one can dish out 5+ assists per game great.
Hit the JC recruits, and transfer portal hard. 3-4 players should want to play in the MWC level. UNLV, SDSU Fresno, sites to visit should be fun, and competition from CSU, Nevada, Boise and UNM should be formidable.
If there's a Shot blocker who is very athletic, 6'9-7'1, he could be the 4th guy as well if Miller isn't healing well.

Re: Roster predictions
If Miller can go, I was thinking they may target a high schooler with that last scholarship. If Miller is out, then they could get a high schooler and Transfer C.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑April 16th, 2021, 4:43 pmWe have 3 open ones even with Miller, no? So we should at least have through Transfer C no matter what Miller does.AGGIEinIOWA wrote: ↑April 16th, 2021, 4:16 pmI like this lineup. If we can land the A and B transfers you have penciled in, I think we could be competitive.Pacobag wrote:PG - Transfer A (25) / Ashworth (15)
SG - Miller (25) / Shulga (15)
SF - Transfer B (25) / Bairstow (15)
PF - Bean (30) / McChesney (10)
C - Horvath (30) / Dorius or Zapala (10)
If Miller isn’t available, replace with Transfer C.

Coaching mistake to play him as much as they did against Tech given what you said.stang wrote: ↑April 16th, 2021, 2:45 pmMost fans I think don't fully realize how bad Brock's back was at the end of last season. Yep, he shouldn't have been playing as much as he did with the green light he had with how bad he was injured. Bad coaching.AggieFBObsession wrote: ↑April 18th, 2021, 8:37 amCoaching mistake to play him as much as they did against Tech given what you said.stang wrote: ↑April 16th, 2021, 2:45 pmMost fans I think don't fully realize how bad Brock's back was at the end of last season.
