Does it matter? Smith did not have aggies as one of 3 assistants. Odom should bring in the staff that he feels comfortable with.aggies1 wrote: ↑April 15th, 2021, 9:30 amhttps://twitter.com/JonRothstein/status ... 6107496448

Nope. The job of any head coach is to assemble the best coaching staff you possibly can to win where you are hired. If bringing your full cadre does so that is fine but if not, your loyalty is to the people who give you a paycheck. The notion that every coach takes his assistants every time they move makes no sense.aggiesdotcom wrote: ↑April 15th, 2021, 10:12 amYes you have to respect that. Re: New Staff on twitter:
I have nothing but good things to say about Dixon, Crawford or Henry. I thought Henry was a sneaky candidate for the UMBC head coaching vacancy. You can find videos of them on YouTube when they appeared on Odom's radio/video show and they never failed to impress me. Dixon was prominent in landing three of our point guards, KJ Maura, Eytle-Rock and Jose Placer (now an All-ASun player at North Florida), while at UMBC.
I also have been wondering if Odom would find a way to get Eric Skeeters involved at USU...he was an assistant with Odom at UMBC and recently was let go from the HC position at Delaware State. From what I know he was instrumental in elevating UMBC's defense during Odom's first two years at UMBC.

Re: New Staff on twitter:
Although unfortunate for the previous assistants, I agree. In this business of NCAA sports, if you can improve your roster/staff, it probably makes sense to do it. No offense to Hansen/Ragland, but maybe the Aggies would have recruited better during Smith's tenure if he had compiled a different staff. If someone is a hiring manager at a business (that they do not own), and they hire their buddy who is less qualified over a more qualified candidate, is that loyalty, ethical, or a douche move?gomretat wrote: ↑April 15th, 2021, 10:15 amNope. Re: New Staff on twitter:
Exactly. Look at Blake who had really no connection to the area. His coordinators while Tucker played out west most of his coaching career is out east. Banda has been in the mid west and east. Not for sure how the product will be on the field, but from a recruiting stand point they have done well so far. I don't buy the notion the coaches have to be from the area. So long as they can adapt and relate to kids is all that matters in my opinion.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑April 15th, 2021, 11:22 amWas everyone also nervous when Smith brought an all-midwest staff with him in 2018?3rdGenAggie wrote: ↑April 15th, 2021, 11:21 amDixon spent a year at Wyoming. Queta was one of the best in Aggie history, but several spots down the line from the several guys who were the very best. You can say that he was the best center we have had...the best of all time for all players is quite a stretch.2004AG wrote: ↑April 15th, 2021, 11:46 amYes.ineptimusprime wrote:Was everyone also nervous when Smith brought an all-midwest staff with him in 2018?3rdGenAggie wrote: ↑April 15th, 2021, 11:21 amDixon spent a year at Wyoming. Sam Merrill is up there (I think) above Queta. Carroll is up there too. I like a lot of "newer" guys. It's just hard to put them above guys who were drafted in the first round, and one (Estes) who was going to be the 2nd player taken in the entire draft. Maybe too we have to take into consideration the speed of the game these days too. Although guys like Nate Williams was as fast and quick and athletic as anyone today. It's always up for discussion.2004AG wrote: ↑April 15th, 2021, 2:44 pmSam Merrill.mcaggie1 wrote: ↑April 15th, 2021, 1:51 pmQueta was one of the best in Aggie history, but several spots down the line from the several guys who were the very best. I am not ever going to put the more recent guys down. I am just grateful that I could see all the "older" greats play, and wish you could have too.
Bottom line, we have a RICH history of Aggie basketball players who could play for any team in the nation.

Re: New Staff on twitter:
Crawford is the most energetic in-game in that he'll get off the bench and clap to get his guys going or point out an assignment, but they're all pretty subdued - but I see it as a cool, calm & collected, not a negative thing. The bench had good energy, as the players were given freedom to be energetic themselves (might remember the bench players from the UVA upset). Crawford also would go down the bench and re-energize/focus the bench when things were going poorly. There were some awesome shots of Crawford and former assistant/now HC of Longwood Griff Aldrich during the UMBC/UVA game - in pure disbelief while also excited out of their minds. Same thing for the Jairus Lyles buzzer beater 3 which remains my #1 memory of that season:OrangeCountyAggie wrote: ↑April 15th, 2021, 5:43 pmThanks umbc32244! Re: New Staff on twitter:
I don’t really care about this east west stuff. In the Logan bubble there is this sense that in a global game you have to be an expert in Utah.
And although yes, Utah will be our recruiting base- and I’m confident they’ll learn the ropes in Utah quickly- there is still some damn good basketball in the DMV too. Who knows, maybe Coach Odom knows some of the coaches at Paul VI or DeMatha or a kid there who would consider a high mid major.
Recruiting is far more global than it was when Stew was around. In terms of recruiting I want the guy parents trust and kids want to play for more than the guy who knows how to pronounce Tooele (right now) the latter can be learned. You can’t fake the former so easily.

Re: New Staff on twitter:
It's perfectly legitimate to wonder if an all east coast staff may struggle initially recruiting in the west. Sure, recruiting is "global," but coaches tend to have more extensive networks closer to where they coach, especially in a more densely populated area like Maryland. If you can get the talent you need within a 300 mile radius of Baltimore, why worry about California? A lot of kids like playing closer to home and might be easier to recruit. UMBC's current roster bears this out, with the furthest American recruit being from Iowa or Georgia. However, there are 5 foreign players, so someone on that staff has a connection overseas. None of this means they can't recruit the west, but it's legit to ask the question. I can't see how it would be a bad thing to have a staff that has established channels in the east and the west. However, an HC needs to go with the best AC for his program, and if that means they are all from the east coast, then so be it. I imagine they'll start working the mountain west and larger area as soon as they can and will get acclimated pretty quickly. Also, nothing against UMBC, but it's possible that coaching at USU may open up some channels that coaches at UMBC did not have open to them previously.
