Looks like we are pretty much gonna have to start from scratch. Bean and Ashworth really the only guys who played a lot that we get back.

Bummer. That said, if I'm being completely honest, if I had graduated from school and was looking to do a master's, I'd seriously consider another school just to have degrees from 2 schools on my resume instead of one.
Good luck to Marco.
Good luck to Marco.

Not unexpected. Wish him all the best unless he follows Smith to Utah.

Another scholarship for Coach Odom! Sad to see these boys choose to leave. I wish them well and look forward to the rebuild of the team!

Re: Marco in the Portal
On paper we ended the season with all of our starters capable of returning next year together with our coach who led us to the NCAAs three years in a row. With one now starter lost to the NBA, two starters lost to the portal, our sixth man lost to being a grad transfer and another starter lost to injury (conjecture) we are are down to Bean being the only returnee out of the top six. I couldn’t have imagined things being this bad.

Amen! All good players, but Bean, Marco, and Rollie on the floor all at once was not a recipe for offensive success.

I will never be upset at a grad transfer. If you graduate an aggie, you are always an aggie.

This hurts us not only in talent, leadership but also in recruiting. Here's what our roster looks like as of now (minus Rollie):

Smith brought us great success while here but he has left the cupboard about as bare as you can without committing any major NCAA violations. Duryea was not a good head coach but he left Smith with some important foundational pieces. Odom certainly has his work cut out for himutaggies wrote: ↑April 12th, 2021, 1:09 pmOn paper we ended the season with all of our starters capable of returning next year together with our coach who led us to the NCAAs three years in a row. What kills me is the NCAA not granting him a waiver to play that first year. Could you imagine him in the lineup next to Sam?LarryTheAggie wrote: ↑April 12th, 2021, 1:26 pmI will never be upset at a grad transfer. If you graduate an aggie, you are always an aggie.

It's very different when a coach is fired vs. poached.sockpuppet wrote: ↑April 12th, 2021, 1:35 pmSmith brought us great success while here but he has left the cupboard about as bare as you can without committing any major NCAA violations. It's pretty hard for a coach who has very little success and is fired to take guys with him on to greener pastures. Sometimes players leave due to the uncertainty and disarray, and sometimes they even follow an assistant or head guy from a bad team to the next destination, but not often. None of ours did. We had one defector of note and he went up to a P5 team, and I think he was gone regardless.
Now, a coach who is extremely engaging, cultivated a winning culture, brought several championships and NCAA tournament appearances, and moved on to be the head coach at a P5 school will definitely be more tempting to follow for some of these guys.
It's yet to be seen who ends up at Utah, but I can't fault guys who had connections with Smith and staff if they want to leave after being abandoned.

Re: Marco in the Portal
We need to start seeing some positive announcements soon. Lots of negative momentum the past few days.
Re: Marco in the Portal
Kudos to Marco for being straightforward and honest and respectful in his post. Classy player who will be missed.
I really hope Odom likes sharpshooters with his recruiting.

If someone in the AD/media relations is listening, can we at least get an “I’m coming back” video from Steve Ashworth like the one from Bean from last week?

Re: Marco in the Portal
Maybe it’s “I couldn’t have imagined things being this good.” Meaning we pick up even better players than we lost in the portal. That would be sweet. Imagine getting players that can actually hit a few three pointers in a tournament game.utaggies wrote: ↑April 12th, 2021, 1:09 pmOn paper we ended the season with all of our starters capable of returning next year together with our coach who led us to the NCAAs three years in a row. If we can’t land impact transfers with 3 of the starting 5 spots (4 of 5 if Miller can’t go) completely up for grabs, we have a problem.mcaggie1 wrote: ↑April 12th, 2021, 2:19 pmMaybe it’s “I couldn’t have imagined things being this good.” Meaning we pick up even better players than we lost in the portal. Re: Marco in the Portal
I'll miss Marco's defense, but won't miss his awful shot mechanics. He was never going to be a consistent big time scorer for us with how his shot looked.

There's going to be a lot of immediate playing time available to multiple people that want to come and take it. If someone is looking for a place to play ball - hey, why not USU?

Re: Marco in the Portal
I think we'll be fine for that reason.
USU has a recent history of success.
We just hired a head coach with a proven track record.
There will be plenty of playing time available.
We'll be fine. I'd like to hear some names ASAP as well, but they'll come.
